Drexel dual - Sun, Nov 17

Not trying to be wise, but I do not think I remember Alex teching anyone.
He TF’d one guy in ‘22-‘23, ranked #316. He had five MD’s, all against guys in the low 100’s(Matt Lee was #63). He’s not a pinner and has low BP%. I was very hopeful going into today, but not optimistic going forward.

Kasak & Facundo both won their first match by 2-points. Kasak beat the #5 ranked wrestler & Facundo beat an unranked wrestler. Kasak seems to have a little more dawg, or the "get after it" in him. Tyler came out & got a sweet takedown in the beginning of his match last night & then expended a lot of effort looking for a fall. He was trying to make a big splash & would have set the crowd on fire if he'd gotten the pin. After that it was mostly a mat wrestling competition & Tyler was a beast on top. Even though he got ridden the entire third period, he still picked up the riding time point. It would have been nice to see Tyler get the escape, but Kellar looked really good in the top position too. Maybe Facundo just needs a little more time to adjust to the weight cut, but he looked a little lackadaisical today, and appeared content with just winning. Just winning is great for most programs, but this ain't Iowa or Ohio State. At Penn State you're expected to dominate, not just win, especially against an unranked opponent. I think we see Kasak by the end of the year, because he appears to have more potential to score bonus. Weight cutting probably isn't an issue for Kasak either, so that's one less thing for him to deal with.

I was happy to hear the TV broadcast would be on BTN+. It would be a full tv screen size. I was disappointed to see the broadcast was dim and typically very small. Could Penn State find a budget to install a real TV camera in Rec Hall? Maybe use 1/10 of a wrestler's NIL money, or half a volleyball player's NIL? The camera they are using is lower quality than I've seen in high school football broadcasts. And while that camera is on order please tell the current camera operator that there is a setting on the camera that is not "Satellite Mode". Todays wrestlers were typically about 4" by 4" on my 55 inch TV.

Southern scuffle is considered second semester so freshman can wrestle there unattached.
Just relaying what Cody said. Everything I read says second semester for NCAA wrestling starts mid/late January and Scuffle is 1/4-5. But maybe you're right or the goal is to ensure PSU can pay their way as they don a PSU singlet.

The match of firsts.

125: LL gets his first win in Rec Hall. Wish we could have seen him go.

133: First chance to see Davis at his new weight. Was looking good until the knee tweak. I figured that was gonna be it for him but the match continues. He never really looked the same after the injury timeout. Was way more reserved. So, first half of the match I liked what I seen, second half not so much, but it was fairly obvious he wasn't 100%.

141: Cael Nasdeo get his first match at Rec Hall. I really like the effort, seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the match. Nerves, adrenaline dump, etc probably all played a factor. He wrestled from whistle to whistle and it was fun to watch.

149: Connor Pierce gets his first match at Rec Hall. Pierce has some excellent defense and scrambling abilities. The last scramble was probably 30-45 seconds, and with maybe 5 seconds left I thought he as gonna give it up but somehow he got one of his legs away. Another competitor and a fun match to watch.

157: Alex Facundo's first match at his new weight. There were rumors of a wrestle off between him and Kasak where Facundo controlled the entire match. After watching Kasak last night and Facundo today, I'm not sure if I believe that. I'm not gonna write off any wrestler after one match. It will be interesting to see how this plays out throughout the year. Here are my thoughts on this match alone. There were a lot of similarities between Facundo this year, and Facundo 2 years ago. I don't really know another way to put it. Like stated above, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

165: MM. If anyone was wondering, his pace hasn't slowed. 4 shots, 1 reattack in the first period. 3/4 converted for a takedown. I think when starting neutral, within 5 seconds of the whistle, he was on the legs. The 3 pt takedown is really going to favor someone like him. I think he may be adding to the short list of guys who have bonused their way through the NCAA tournament. Could possibly have 100% bonus rate.

174: Levi looks like a full grown 74. Either he hit a big growth spurt or he was cutting a lot of weight last year. I guess it could be a combination of the both. Looked great last night controlling the entire match, and builds on that this afternoon. Extremely tough on top and looks like he's having a blast. Kudos to Janda for fighting off his back at the end.

184: Carter looks like a full grown 84. Sporting a head wrap from the cut he suffered last night, he secures the third straight tech.

197: Lucas Cochran. I'm not sure if this is his first match in Rec Hall or not. I'm sure someone will answer that. Nice quick first takedown and a tilt to make it 7-0 early. Another takedown and tilt and I believe it went 14-1 heading into the 2nd period. Escape and quick takedown for the fourth straight tech. Hello Lucas Cochran! Interesting note, and not to take anything away from Cochran, but I think the announcers said his opponent weighed in at 183.something. This is the other weight thats up for grabs and I would love to see Lucas and Barr wrestle at some point.

285: Kerk came out with some heavy hands early. A quick takedown, turn or two, and a pin.

Final 41-3

Overall I think it was a great match. A few backups got a shot to go and wrestled hard. The stars put on a show. Tip of the hat to Drexel, I think all of their guys battled and made our guys earn a lot of points.

Only 2 guys in this match were starters at the same weight last year, MM and Kerk. LL didn't get a chance to go, and 2 backups at 41 and 49 with BB and Van Ness wrestling last night at the all star match. Taking that even futher, we could see 2 different starters at 57 and 97 at Lehigh December 8th.

Next up is the Army Black Knight Invitational. Not sure how many guys Cael and Co are planning to take, but we could see a wrestle off at 57 and 97 and I am assuming that will be the actual debut for LL.

We Are!
Word is Levi was cutting a lot last year. He even mentioned that he has to cut a little (he didn't mention how much) to make 174 now. He is looking great at 174!

Kasak & Facundo both won their first match by 2-points.
This is both false and irrelevant.

False, because Kasak had competed at the Black Knight Invitational two weeks earlier. (It was his first dual, if that really matters.)

Irrelevant, because Kasak vs. Munch was in Kasak's first semester. This is now Facundo's 4th year at PSU. It was no more his first match than it was Mesenbrink's.

WHOOSH

Pretty sure he was talking about Kasak beating Kellar 4-2 last night.
