You have to respect their passion and their work ethic. These people are committed. For each of them this is a dream come true and you gotta love that.
Are there any Lions on the (US) olympic team?

I've enjoying swimming, women's indoor volleyball, cycling and rowing. Haven't watched any basketball. Looking forward to track and field, the remaining events I mentioned first as well as wrestling and basketball medal rounds. Haven't caught any team handball, but I definitely want to watch that sport.

Their dedication and work ethic is unreal. One of the women swimming medalists was saying she's off when she gets home, doesn't start training for 2020 until August 25!

It's an amazing couple of weeks, some incredible individual stories.....world records one minute, gut-wrenching 4th place finishes or game-ending injuries the next. I always remember McKay's "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." How true, how very very true!

Yes, have watched swimming, cycling, and basketball.

At least two classic events so far -- the women's cycling road race with a great finish, and the mens' 4x100 freestyle relay, which was terrific.
Those road races were epic and the final descent like watching Talledega. I was really worried for that Dutch girl. She hit hard and did not move. Closer to that concrete gutter and she might have died.

the kenyan coach mess is the story of rio.. if it holds and if in fact the long time coach was trying to help his kids beat the drug testing (frankly, i have no idea how that would be remotely possible... maybe the kids don't like peeing in front people and would be willing to pay $10K to miss that)... that's a huge wow and it will call into question what may or may not have been happening all these years with the kenyan runners.

truly an odd moment... and disconcerting, too.

awaiting more info

Seems a little weird to me that college coaches would be coaching other national teams
sorry for the brain fart. hovasse is obviously an american. just wanted to coach, i guess. he also may have played in japan.contreras is from mexico.

Really enjoying the swimming... particularly Lily King calling out the Russian drug cheat and then kicking her butt in the finals (and yes a .5 second difference in elite swimming qualifies as a butt kicking, especially since the Russian came into the games as the favorite). Can't wait to see how Phelps handles the crazed South African in the 200 fly finals tomorrow night.

As an aside, the first US gold of the games was won in air rifle competition by a girl who went to West Springfield High School (VA), the same one my kids attended. Who knew???

??! Had not heard anything about this. What happened?

The kayak hitting the couch on the course and flipping over was truly an Olympic moment. Where is Curt Gaudy when you need him?

Apparently the medal winners are also given a commemorative knick knack that is supposed to represent the Olympic rings. During the broadcast of the medal ceremony for the men's team gymnastics, one of the Japanese members could be heard asking his teammates: 「歯ブラシ立て?」- "Is this a toothbrush holder?"

To me, it looks like someone mistook their Barrel of Monkeys game for Shrinky Dinks

I've always felt that there are too many events in swimming. What's the point of the different strokes? Just get in the water and swim whatever way is the fastest. You don't see track having the 100m run, the 100m backward run, 100m cartwheel & 100m military crawl.

For example, when high jumpers discovered different techniques (straddle, western roll, Fosbury flop) they didn't add another event. They did the logical thing and went with whatever allowed them to jump higher.

Likewise, when shot putters developed the glide technique in the 1950s, they did not create another event. Nor did they create another event when the spin technique came out in the late 1960s. Even today, some shot putters use the glide, some use the spin. No one uses the old/original technique that was basically throwing from a crouched position.

While we're at it, get rid of the walking events in track as well. Nothing against competitive walkers, but I have to question a timed event where there are rules that force you to move slower than you are physically capable of.

There have been calls for eliminating the pentathlon, pistol, fencing, freestyle swimming, horse jumping and cross country running. Perhaps you could revamp it by swapping a few events. Keep the swim & 3km cc run. Add boxing, road cycling and tennis.

I have no problem with the swimming events. I'd think if you were going to cut Olympic sports- ping pong and badminton would be the first 2. How in the world are they considered Olympic sports? ;)

EDIT- There are 12 medals for ping long (4 events of g/s/b) and 15 medals (5 events) for badminton.

It was scary wasn't it? The road conditions with the slightly moist pavement treacherous.

My wife and I were pacing back and forth in front of the TV. I was screaming at Marra to "get out of the saddle!" I knew that if the chase group caught her she wouldn't medal.

I was so upset for her. She gave it every last once she had. As it was, Longo who did a majority of the pulling in the chase group came in 3rd.
She was screwed with the chase group of 3. Perfect amount to all work together and get medals. Two might have been too few and more than 3 might have led to infighting and hesitation - allowing her to hold them off

BTW, I thought the Olympic sport of Handball was the sport I have always been familiar with. The one that is played indoors, on a high, four walled court, upon which one can also play raquetball.

Then I tuned into one of the various NBC stations and saw the Brazilian women beat the crap out of some other team in a game that resembled soccer a bit, except that there was the equivalent of a three point arc in front of each goal, and the attacking team apparently cannot go inside the arc, the lone exception being the person in possession of the handball (which looks like a small volleyball). Had NEVER seen that game before.

You ready for synchronized pole vaulting?

That's Cary Grant's swan song. Not one of his best movies, but still a fun flick. Grant had impeccible timing, even at the end.
It's more than fun, and it holds up beautifully. LOL, nobody had better timing than Grant. The film historian David Thomson, in his A Biographical Dictionary of Film (highly recommended), says of Grant, "He is the best and most important actor in the history of cinema."

No. The Olympics is stale. It has become the World Swimming and Gymnastics Championships. BAck in the day the networks gave us a sample of MULTIPLE sports and let the stars shine.

Today the networks have this lame plan that everyone wants to see 90 swimming events and 0 boxing, 0 wrestling, and so on.

We have become the Russians. Our athletes are all pros.
