ESPN: Penn State is TONE DEAF

OK I will say it....I actually agree with most of what Davis said. And I am 100% in the camp that Joe did not do anything wrong. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.

The timing isn't right. Nothing has really happened. If they don't couple this with a simultaneous and strong denunciation of the Freeh Report and the NCAA's subsequent sanction "cram down" this is just another in a long line of F ups by the PSU administration....an opportunity lost. I will wait to see how it is executed, but that is my opinion for now.

Ding... Ding... Ding... I agree 100% with you. And this too is coming from a person who hopes that one day the stadium name is changed to "Paterno Stadium". Coach Paterno's time will come... but unfortunately this isn't it.

Listening to this clip, I think Davis is actually being supportive of Joe and is in the camp of some who have posted that the entire situation needs to be addressed (Freeh report, lawsuits, OGBOT failures, plus public apologies). Hmm, big fundraising upcoming and trying to soothe the ruffled feathers of many alumni so the cash flows again? Well, if I am in the white stripe area, I will wear my Freeh Stooges shirt to the game. If in blue, a shirt that honors Joe.

That's just it. The timing will never be "right" if what you mentioned doesn't happen first. It's a self licking ice cream cone.

This is not an easy decision for the BOT. What if they honor Joe and something negative comes out of the trails? That would be pretty bad. On the other hand you can't save his 50th anniversary for later.

I think PSU should recognize the 50th anniversary of Success With Honor by focusing more on Joe's accomplishments than on Joe himself. They can save the big Joe recognition for later.

We're never going to know the truth about what happened; the narrative was lost long ago and will never change.

I really don't give a damn what other people think. Honor the man for his accomplishments and what he did for Penn State.

What trials is something negative going to come out at?

I don't think anything negative will come out but who knows? The 1970s allegations were a surprise. Curley won't indict himself but he could say that his decision not to report was supported by Paterno. Maybe the A9 find something negative in the Freeh materials and it gets leaked. Possibly more from the insurance company. Who knows?

I don't think Joe is guilty but I think any big honors should wait until these cases are settled. They would be received much better if the Paterno family wins their case, C/S/S are exonerated, etc.

Now is the time for the university leadership to stand up and explain to the world why this is happening. Explain that now that they've looked at everything and taken their time, there's no link between Joe and the crimes. Explain that what they did 5 years ago seemed like a good idea at the time, but now they realize their errors. Explain that when looking more deeply into the evidence, they wish they had done more.

If there was anything bad out there about Joe, we'd have heard it by now. In bold print, capital letters, with neon. There's no way the scoundrels would have kept it hidden.

And going along with this, we're never going to get the full truth of what happened. It's always going to be periodic shades of gray which make one side or the other look worse.

Like it or not, the Paterno Family did and continues to do so much for the university and beyond. Making occasions like this is appropriate and should be expected. It's not going to cause anyone to change their opinion on Penn State or Joe. Blowhards like Mike & Mike, Dan Bernstein, Sally Jenkins and others will get their panties in a bunch for about 5 minutes, and then the story will go away. In the end, the resulting effect will be nothing and furthermore, we shouldn't give a DAMN about what others think.

After five years, like most on here I couldn't care less what most people especially the general public think of Paterno or Penn State. 90-95% can't get facts correct and it's been five fkin years already. So honestly I wish this was a huge celebration ... and they create a statue and it's giving the middle finger to every idiot out there who's yet to understand facts and thinks that Joe knew for 40 years because that's what they were told. Penn State needs to do what's best for Penn State. Stop appeasing to idiots.

Oh darn, the worldwide leader in tabloid sports (that has zero credibility in facts of this case as they have shown at every turn) is upset. The employer of everyone from womanizers to Ray Lewis and Bill Conlin has the audacity to call someone else tone deaf based on 2 allegations from 40 years ago that take about 5 minutes and an ounce of common sense to disprove.

Honestly, PSU honoring the 50th anniversary of Joe's first game was not even worth of a bottom line mention. This isn't the school changing the stadium or erecting the stature again. Sadly, the administration stepped in it again. They can't do this without formally rejecting the Freeh report and outlying why (i.e., actual facts have never supported it) he got it wrong.

I stopped giving a damn what others think long ago. And I have to say, this entire saga forced me to reevaluate my opinion of the media in general. And it forced me to realize that much of what I thought was special about PSU was a lie. For me it has been a huge learning experience.

Gee, who could have seen this coming?

Davis is right, they should have waited for everything to be done before even contemplating such an event.

Would Paterno want all this attention for himself ? He always claimed he didn't want any. I wonder how many lost recruits this will cost Penn State now. I am so sick of hearing about the scandal. How did they convict sandusky so fast, but it is taking so long for the rest to go to court ?

I wore my PSU polo to work today (we have a casual dress, but it is traditional for folks to wear their college stuff on Friday during the season) for the first time in a long time. I'm going to be interested to see what happens.

Of course, it's white and I spilled coffee on it almost immediately....:oops:

As far as ESPiN goes, they are the guys that covered up a video about child abuse at Syracuse. End of story.

Who is this "University Leadership" you speak of?

What makes you think "false narratives" only exist in central PA?

"Everything to be done"? Like what - Armageddon?

Thank goodness for you GMJ - how else would a bag of hair look intelligent by comparison?

Do you think we get a statement from PSU? They had to know this was coming right

I agree... Perfect time for the BOT to say it was an emotional time and we were all angry. We rushed to judgement and now having time to review the facts of this case it is abundantly clear that the Freeh Report was based on zero facts and nothing but the opinion of Louis Freeh. Joe did everything he was supposed to do at the time and his actions would still hold true today. There is no link of any crime that Joe Paterno committed. We are taking this time to honor a man who has done so good for so many ..... etc etc

Somebody will probably point to it and say "6 and 6."

I support Paterno. By the way, I think it's laughable that espn is lecturing anybody on appropriate behavior - this is the same group that celebrates transgenders or whatever they are called these days.

You are right, it is stupid to wait until the trials are over and all the dirt has been exposed instead of announcing an honoring of Joe Paterno only a couple of months after a couple of allegations of him looking the other way have been released to the public.

The '70s crap was, well, crap. One more cover up by Ira and his criminal friends. They again used Joe as their scapegoat. Bleep all of them.
