Favorite Maulings

This wasn't a Penn State match and there is no video available that I know about, but one of the worst, if not THE worst, maulings ever dished out was by Dan Gable in his senior year at ISU. He had a pin streak going that was somewhere between 15 - 25 pins. ISU wrestled Lehigh at Lehigh. Lehigh's guy was named Herb Campbell. He was determined to go the distance with Gable and this was before the TF rule was introduced. The final score was something like 27 - 2! I can't imagine how sore Campbell must have been after that.

I mentioned this in the other thread about best matches witnessed: Jim Martin's stalling DQ win (up 14-0 at the time) over Iowa at Rec Hall in the the mid-1980s ...

Again: he made a Dan Gable wrestler quit.

Ruth over Lewnes at 2011 Scuffle. Not a flashy match but one of Ruth’s first big victories that year and a pretty dominating performance over a highly ranked guy.

Did anyone mention Zain vs Hayes in the dual? Singlehandedly turned the momentum our way after those 2 TDs, and I’ll never forget my neighbor in the stands screaming “Tear his head off!” over and over again in the final minutes. Zain dang near did just that.

My first year wrestling (10th grade), I wrestled the best guy in our league in a dual. I lost 18-1, but felt good because I saved 2 or 3 team points by not getting pinned. And I wasn't sore at all. ;)

I did something similar in college. I moved up two weights to 142 against Bucknell's best guy because our starter was out and we didn't want to take the forfeit. I went out with the attitude that it was funny because I was so overmatched. I don't remember being sore, but I laughed at my teammates when it was over because I had saved us the 3 points.

I have always believed watching this mauling impacted Tom Ryan in a huge way. It has to be from an emoional point of view tremendously gut wrenching to helplessly watch your son take such a mat beating that he staggers around like the town drunk.
I agree, it actually became hard to watch, well for me anyway. and I do believe that this match had a big part in his boy not wrestling anymore. If I remember correctly he did not compete after this match

He did compete after that match. This was the season where he medically forfeited his first match at Big 10s and then wrestled in the wrestlebacks.

He still competed, but I have always believed this was the reason behind the forfeit to the consolation round plan.

I didn't see it (and probably only a few if any on this board saw it), but what I have been told is that the Kolat vs Jeff Tufano wrestle off in 1993 (maybe 1994) was as bad a beating as the kids on the team ever witnessed lol

I saw that match. There was a lot of hype beforehand. Gable was already a legend and Campbell was a very promising young wrestler and many wondered if Campbell could make a match of it. He couldn't!

Do you remember the final score? I remember it was really lopsided. 27-2 is what comes to mind.

I tried doing a quick search and couldn't find the final result. My recollection was Gable's tally was something like 24 or 25 points. In many ways it was viewed as a victory by Campbell to not have gotten pinned. Gable was brutal on top. Thinking back on people that were brutal on top that were fun to watch, I remember Syracuse's Gene Mills. He was really fun to watch--a former 2x champ.

Found it. The score was 23-3, on January 24, 1970.
