Greg Kerkvleit transfers to Penn State

Let's lay out Kerk's commitments and dispel this notion of him being some kind of flight risk.

1. He's from suburban Minneapolis and committed early to his hometown Goofers, who have a long history of developing HWTs.
2. Then they recruited Steveson over him at the same weight. Writing was on the wall, he flipped to Smith -- who happens to be a top coach at a top program.
3. His freestyle career rocketed and he decided OKST doesn't have the HWT partners to meet his legit Olympic aspirations. He considered PSU and Ohio State, and chose to follow Snyder.
4. Snyder left for PSU, and Kerk followed him.

Perhaps he rushed his choice to go to OKST, though even that one made sense at the time.

With Snyder at PSU for the foreseeable future -- along with Cael, Varner, Cassar, Nick Nevills, etc. -- what is the risk of Kerk leaving? Not the risk of fans feeling uneasy, the actual risk of Kerk leaving?
So, in other words, you're not concerned? I thought we always had to be concerned about something. So, your lack of concern concerns me. Boy, do I feel better.

Back to Cali??
Doubtful, didnt most of his family move to SC to be with he and Nick/wife.?
If Seth does not win the spot, he could always transfer to Loch Haven. Still close to PSU and can still workout at the NLWC with all those great partners.

Has anyone checked on Vodka? Serious question. We don't need him to flatline.

Lol, you beat me to it Hotshoe. His HR friends probably talking him off the ledge as we speak.

He's probably drunk calling the NCAA compliance office and incoherently rambling about Carl and slush funds and steroids and cheating. At this rate, NCAA Compliance Office will need a new unlisted number. :)

How do we pronounce his name? Yes, I know Greg.

This is great plan in case Cassar doesn’t come back next year. We always say , iron sharpens iron, I am sure him and Seth will get along well

Now we need that 125lb so Howard only has to hold it for 1 year (shirt before goes to 133)

And need a true dominate 149’r

El-jefe, who is the true brooks / beard types for 125, 149, 157. 165 (or is Matt lee that good)
Looks like 133, 141 , 174-Hvy are great

Is it part of a slush fund if the wife of one of the wrestlers on the team is named "Director of Wrestling Operations", assuming it is a paid position?

125: Richie Figueroa (CA 2021) -- committed to Arizona State but shopping around. Easily the best lightweight available.
Stevo Poulin (NY 2021) -- good but some size risk (smallish). Figs dominated him (that's how good Figs is).
There are a lot of 2022 guys, the problem with them is projecting today who can be a 125 in 3-4 years from now. Nico Rivera (WI); Joey Cruz (CA -- definitely interested in PSU); Levi Haines (BIglerville, M2 trainee); Daniel Cardenas (CA); Jackson Arrington (Forest Hills); Troy Spratley (Seminary); Nick Fea (Seminary).

149: Shayne Van Ness (NJ 2021) -- great style fit, but his father is a Rutgers alum. We'll see.
3 of the top 5 overall in 2022 are projected 149s: Ryan Crookham (Notre Dame Green Pond); Nic Bouzakis (Seminary); Jesse Mendez (IN).

157/165 has more uncertainty, because it's not as clear who is at which weight, and some guys might grow into 174.

Joe Lee should be good, we'll see about Matt (maybe, just not as sure). Not Brooks/Beard good, but AA level. Not sure either can get down to 157. I think we'd actively pursue a true monster, but not take someone just to take someone.

2021: Cael is recruiting both Alec Facundo (MI) and Trey Kibe (Mifflin County). Facundo has visited, is the best of the group at either weight, #1 overall 2021, but is probably a 174. Kibe has already beaten a few D1 commits, but also might outgrow 165.

Victor Voinovich (OH) -- but has not shown interest in PSU (tOSU, Cornell, OKST).
Cael Valencia (CA) and Luka WIck (CA) -- uncommitted but expected to follow family to Tempe and Madison.
Carson Manville (MN) -- but he's so hard to project right now with his injury history. I don't think you can take him by himself -- could supplement the Lees, or supplement another recruit.

2022 is very thin at these weights. Jake Niffeneger (OH) and Erik Gibson (Forest Hills) are the best of the bench, probably neither as good as the 2021 guys above (except maybe Manville).

We need Willie to land Crookham for us. Perhaps the slush fund could buy Willie a lifetime supply of hot dogs from Richard's in Easton for landing Ryan.

If Nick takes his RS next year, woulnt he prolly be a domiNANT 149 in 21-22?

And right on que, Vodka in with the DT weight gain speculation. Oh to be as pure of heart as Iowa. Wonder when the Brands get their Wings? Lol
Grip is over there calling them out for it ... right?

Difference between a bit over the top crazy and just plain Stupid. Most of the BS On both boards is a bit overzealous. And then every once in a while a person needs to be called out by his own.

Don't believe there's anything to defend. A coach's job is to get the best people available and to win under the rules. Being recruited over is fan speak, totally made up. Every athlete knows they have to bring their best just like in a job situation or they can be replaced. I only see this brought up by fans of wrestling, not other sports.

Nobody is ever recruited over. The best guy will wrestle at HWT. That's how wrestling works and I doubt anyone on the team is afraid to compete for a spot in the lineup. And if they are then they aren't cut out for wrestling for PSU or any team for that matter.

The idea that someone goes to a program expecting no competition for a spot is absurd. Even if they did, do they think people in the post-season are going to roll over also?

These decisions are not easy for the high school kids and their family. I get what is being said here, but anyone that thinks; (1) who's already in a room, or (2) who's committed, doesn't factor into the decision is for MOST wrestlers is misinformed. A DT or a Bo or a Jason, even a Kirkvliet may not consider it, but most do. We're blessed to have the circumstances we have at PSU.

Your post reminds me of Cassar's comments after Rasheed won the 197 spot 2 years ago. Many thought Cassar would transfer (would have seemed fairly logical). He said--no! To be a national champ you have to beat the best in the country which includes your room. He stayed, and we all know how that turned out!
