Hardshell Crabs prices - updated 10-30-2024

Any place close to BWI or on the way to State College to sit down and pick blue crabs?

For big heavy expensive crabs with picnic tables to eat them at try Grappling Crab in Lisburn PA, which will be about a 10 minute drive from I-83. The crabs are stuffed full. You'll need to order at least an hour in advance as they cook them for you. I'd go with the Jumbo's, but they are expensive.

For take-out only, currently on the small side and light go to Karns Food store which is currently selling them for $28/dozen so bring an empty cooler. Don't plan on having them share a cooler as they will "leak" and ruin your other goods. Karns has a store located at Newberry Commons, which is a 4 minute detour from 83 north. Here's a google map.

Got a dozen today. $26 and they were from 6 1/4" to 7" with about half right at 6 1/2". Exactly one paper shell and the rest were packed. Good eating today!
From where? I live on western part of the state I need to head to middle Maryland south of breezewood to normally get them fresh.

Karns Foods. Here's their weekly ad flyer.

In the late 70's, I was living in Annapolis. Crabs were $35/bushel. Spent an afternoon about 100 yards from the Severn River Bridge with some co-workers catching crabs on a trot line. We got quite a few crabs and drank quite a few beers. Good times.

Last weekend was my bday. Got 2 dozen from a roadside stand in Delaware. Finishing the claws right now, listening to a Dead show and toasting the end of (non-calendar) Summer! 🍻

A month ago I got a deal - a dozen for $15 outside of Ocean City NJ. $5 fee if you want them cleaned, which is worth it. Got 2 dozen splitting with my father and 11 yo son. We also bought a large pizza. My dad and I had a few beers. We finished it all while all the ladies went shopping. Perfection.

Did the same thing with lobsters years ago in Ogunquit, Maine. Me, my dad and the guy who was screwing my mother-in-law at the time had babysitting duty whilst the lady folk went shopping, dinner and drinks.

My Old Man caught a local roadside guy who just wanted to end his day. MASSIVE FEAST of cheap steamed culled lobsters and beers.

One of the best meals of my life.

Grabbed another dozen today for $25. All over 6 1/4" and full. Nice crabs!

Crabs are $22/dozen this week. I'm going to grab a couple dozen for the weekend celebration! Last week I got a dozen for $25 and those guys were big, full, and oh so sweet.

Man, I wish I lived near a coast. We can get decent oysters here, but they are like $2.50 each. Down in SC, my colleagues would remind me that they were "50 cent."
