after watching some of the BTN replays, it seemed that OFF holding was called on us much more than opponents. watching 2019 Iowa game it was striking, and we had an awesome pass rush. have you ever seen a simple summary of calls on us vs calls on them? i recall the LJsr said the there had never been a holding call by any OL against Courtney Brown, which seems almost impossible. there could just be random reasons, but after nearly 3 decades in the BIG, you would assume luck cuts both ways. In watching just a few games, every one had more holding on our OL than opponents.

Tough to isolate on individual penalties…but going back to the start of 2018 (what’s easily accessible on the goPSUsports website), our opponents have been called for 51 more penalties than us, which accounted for 287 yards. That includes both conference and non-conference games.

When PSU OL have gotten the Little1G fake holding calls I've always favored the OL pull a Joe Green gut upper cut on the DL the very next play...walk over to the ref and say 'you pick' let me play or don't.

Hlding is not called anymore unless there is an actual reach and grab (tackle) or a pull on a jersey or arm. They allow holding at close quarters. Watch the Auburn game on the play where Clifford had 7 seconds to throw to Lambert- Smith for the first down. Wallace is holding the D-ends jersey but in tight to his body. They look like a couple of 8th graders at a dance. They do not call that because if you are a 250 lb D end and you allow a 335 lb tackle to to get you there, you deserve what you got. It is okay so long as it is called the same way throughout the game and equally to both teams.

Newsflash: Big10 is crooked.

I recall a photo of Courtney Brown, maybe on the cover of BWI, with one opponent with arms wrapped around Brown' arm and another's arms wrapped around Brown's leg. I recall reading holding was called only once against opponents holding brown.

2019 vs. iowa, 3rd quarter: Brown TD run called back for holding. Freiermuth TD reversed and ball put at the 1-foot line. Hamler TD run called back for holding. Clifford TD run called back for holding. We went from the 1-foot line to goal-to-go from the 20. Totally f*cked up.

Yes, john o’neill was the head ref.

Of course, the calls all even out in the end.

So because they’re getting their @ss beat you think they should get a personal foul on the next play? That makes no sense.

thanks, and that is very interesting. in conference games is where I have been noticing this, but then as a fan there is a built in bias that is hard to a avoid. When our D is better than the opponents OL and our OL is a bit better than the D of the opponents, you would expect holding call to be a little in our favor.

I’d be curious to see how many TD’s we’ve had called back due to penalties compared to our opponents. I never celebrate a TD until I know there are no flags.
Exactly....its not the number of holding calls, it's the timing.

We get called on game winning drives, or drives where we are in position to open the score margin.
Opponents get called down three scores with a buck fifty left on the clock.

Only if they add 1000 or so Refs to flag the Steeler opponents into oblivion the rest of the way. That might bit to obvious.

In ernest, the speed of the players and sometimes the size makes impossible for the eyes of the refs to see the plays no matter how good the refs are at positioning themselves.

There exactly TWO holding calls against PSU’s Big Ten opponents when LaVar and Courtney Brown played together one year. Sitting in the north end zone, I saw more than that in one half of most games. Absolute joke.

The Referee makes the call publicly. It doesn’t mean HE threw the flag. While I do agree that B1G officials are incompetent, it is a mistake to blame the Referee. The main reason B1G teams struggle in bowl games is because of holding allowed in conference games not being allowed in bowl games by neutral crews.

"That includes both conference and non-conference games.". Hysterical, you completely ignore the OP's point (officiating in conference games) and attempt to refute it with totally irrelevant information. The actual reality relative to what the OP posted is that PSU was called for 462 yards in penalties in their 9 Conference games while their 9 Conference opponents were only called for 378 yards in penalties - the diametric opposite of what you're attempting to suggest.

Since we've been strolling down Memory Lane this week, how many of you old b*st*rds remember the ABC(?) "You Make the Call" segment by a Big Ten official (Perry?)? I always thought it should be "You blow the call" showcasing the work of Witvoet, O'Neill, and the other nincompoops.

This has always been the cover for the Big Two. All penalties are not created equal. It’s not the number of penalties. It’s when they happen. Numbers are relatively easy to access, but situations aren’t. You have to go through the game play by play to document a penalty imbalance in critical situations.

Correct, defensive holding on a PSU defensive lineman that gives MSU a 1st down when we stopped them on 3rd. Defensive holding on a punt on the guy over center that gave the OSU a 1st down, when we had the lead and major momentum. OSU then scores on that drive. Just one penalty at the right time can definitely change the outcome.
