Holy hell - Ramos goes off

According to a post on the Iowa board Ramos is doing a radio interview later on today. This could go either way.

How was Kemerer recruited or not recruited? We signed only 1 big time blue chipper that year and it was the guy who beat Kemerer at States. Pretty logical move by Cael to keep his powder dry for the Suriano/Hall class.[/QUOTE]
Just heard we didn't recruit him was all....not saying it was right or wrong just saying it could be a factor with a young man who is close with said wrestler. Not saying it's a fact on why or where he goes just was told it's a factor at this point.

I never saw the match live - only saw score updates on this site, so I have no idea who was in whose corner! BTW dingbat, it is not my "conspiracy theory" - it is what Ramos represented at the post-match Press Conference, last time I checked he wrestled for both Iowa, HWC and the Brands Brother's.....so much for you trying to absurdly claim it's something I made up - you HR freaks are too much sometimes. BTW, Ramos did not say "the Brands" lied to him - in fact he said the diametric opposite about Terry Brands, said he could confirm many of his statements - his primary claim was that Tom Brands intentionally misled him right after he had brought DD back to the HWC and he [Ramos] asked him a bunch of questions regarding his own status with HWC and that he was thinking of a career change [e.g., leaving HWC]. Ramos claims he was all but out the door and Tom Brands told him things to get him to stay that he did not honor or answers that were clearly not and did not line-up with subsequent actions. I have no idea, how Tom Brands answered the questions that Ramos asked when he was thinking about leaving, but guess what, neither do you!

Going to stop answering you after this. You posted Tom was in DD's corner...he wasn't. If everything you post is hear say or second hand why post anything?

If, again IF Tom Brands in fact told Tony Ramos one thing about who would be his coach for the Trials, then did another without first making sure Ramos was on board with any coaching switch, then I think we're talking about a breach of good faith -- a lack of integrity if you will. And that's mostly what I heard Ramos say. In a couple sentences at the top of the script he accepted responsibility for results on the mat, then went on to describe what he obviously felt was a breach of faith on the part of Brands.

I don't agree with the way Ramos handled the situation. If he intended to go public as he did, he should've gone behind closed doors with Brands first. Maybe he felt one "good" turn deserves another, who knows. And obviously disappointment with the loss played a large part. But after listening to both Ramos' ventilation and Brands' response to it, I'm honestly left wondering if Tom Brands might've been less than completely honest with his wrestler.

According to reports from Carver, Tom and M* were standing behind the official's table during the match. During the break, Tom went to towel off Dennis, and M* went to towel off Tony. Duroe was in Dennis's corner, and one of the best freestyle coaches in the United States, Terry Brands, was in Tony's corner. This is exactly how a match between family should have been handled. Now, had Terry Brands jumped over to coach Dennis after all these years, then Ramos would have a point. If you watched Flo's documentary on the recent Russian tourney, this was addressed.

Maybe Tony wanted to hear Tom say, "We hope you win because you are the main guy here." Tom Brands would never do that because Daniel Dennis is just as much his guy as Tony is. BTW, Tony lost a wrestle-off at Iowa against Tyler Clark back in 2011. Brands stuck with Tony.

Ditto. Someone in press corps asked Brands if he "promised to corner Ramos in a conversation with Ramos" (e.g., as per Ramos' post-match press statement)... I found Tom Brands' answer to be almost surreal. He fist stated, "Yes, I promised Tony I would be in his corner.....'corner him'....". Then he went on to say, "I corner all my guys and commit to corner all of them.....". If you listen to Ramos' statements, his big beef is what he was told when he had made the decision to leave HWC AFTER DD had returned and been there for some time - Ramos made no bones about it, he wasn't happy and made his feelings known to Tom Brands....told Tom Brands he was going to make a career change and leave HWC....etc.. These are the direct promises and statements and promises Ramos kept referring to that he felt he was misled and betrayed about. Tom Brands more-or-less acknowledged that the conversation(s) did occur, but his answer as to what he promised Ramos were very obtuse and suspicious imho - the way he answered Ramos' accusation about promising to "corner him" being a classic example.

Okay, what does it say to you when both sides agree on what was said but disagree on the actual outcome? To me, it says that the meaning of "corner" is different to the two men, or that they didn't contemplate a day where Tom would have two guys to "corner". It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. I've had dozens of situations where two of us would be in a heated argument over something and it turned out our meaning of a word was different. Once we found that out, common ground was reached. I just have a hard time believing Tom didn't tell DD and TR that he supported them both but out of respect each of them would be a neutral observer.

Ramos is a great wrestler, but has always been a loose cannon and let's his emotions get the best of him. This could have been aired behind closed doors. Not the way to handle it Tony, know matter who is right or wrong.

What?
Handled perfectly.
Hopefully, Tony kicks some butt and the Brands have to get a protection order.

Tom is the voice of reason on this board. Every board needs a Tom. Very professional .
We usually add a few Toms every year, but they suddenly disappear around Thanksgiving. Not sure why...
But our Tom survives the grind of November every season. Nor is he just filled with bread stuffing....he is full of wrestling tidbits, morsels, and delicacies. He provides us with the meat and potatoes of wrestling information covered with gravy. Tom provides!:D

Sure, maybe....I guess we'll find out more later this afternoon. However, if Ramos had other career opportunities that he bypassed due to some representations and/or commitments that were made to him that he feels were only made to keep him at HWC, but never intended to be honored, he has a legit right to air his grievances especially if he ends up deciding to go elsewhere.

Thank you, Dunk and Jefe/Bveo. I wasn't trolling when I asked about Spencer at 3 am this morning, just merely asking others opinions now given what took place. I don't know my @$$ from the sun when it comes to reading wrestlers and their intentions on committing to a program, but I sure as hell wish that Spencer will end up in blue and white (and Teasdale too).
Hope to meet you two someday down the road....

Taking thoughts on the interview......

A) TR walks it back and apologizes
B) TR walks it back but stops short of actually saying "im sorry blah blah blah"
C) adds a new car bomb to the current dumpster fire
D) Apologizes first then does a drive by on something else to do with TnT/DD
E) fails to call in
F) something else

Im thinking A. I think someone got ahold of him last night/today and calmed him down.

One thing I am sure of regardless of the direction he takes, his interview has overshadowed a great OTT and he may have just won the internet for the the weekend.

The Elephant in the room.......From march 28th. this leads me to maybe consider my last post. Todays radio interview may just be fuel on the fire

http://www.flowrestling.org/article/40607-57kg-the-iowa-situation

According to THIS STORY, the Brands, Metcalf and Morningstar talked DD into returning to HWC and International Freestyle Competition, not the opposite. Combined with your FLO article above, an interesting story indeed. I wonder if part of the problem is that they really haven't shared the full story with TR of how DD came to be at HWC - which was via a large-scale lobbying effort and really not the idea of DD at all.

OK, enough about the hawks, this is happy valley. this is a PSU website isn't it? Go to the hawks website if you want to talk about iowa.

I have been critical of many things involving Tom Brands at different times, and have been banned from HR for voicing my opinion on a couple of these topics, but.......Anybody who knows Tom or Terry at all knows they are 100% all in with the guys they coach. Tom would not have intentionally lied to Tony about the DD situation just to screw him over. That is not who Tom Brands is. He does not operate with deceit of that type. Tom is who he says he is. I don't like some of the things I've noticed the past several years in the program, but nothing about the honesty or integrity of the Brands would make my list. Old school-too tough on guys-over trains-too intense- any of these may or may not be true, but honesty and integrity are not things Tom Brands lacks imo.

I also feel the same way about Tony Ramos. Great young man who is all in with the people he cares about. I believe he is sincere in his hurt, but I do wonder if he will view it differently once he can clear his head. He just suffered through a terrible heart break. I hope these guys can work this out and stay the course. Tony is one of the most "Hawkeye" guys you will ever meet. He is a hero to many young kids wrestling in our state, and very warm and caring with the young wrestlers he helps. He is somewhat like a young Terry Brands. The Flo video on Terry talked about him wanting to climb a fence and run into the wild after losing in this same spot- I wish Tony had run off and found himself alone with his thoughts for a couple of days before this interview. He was obviously hurting a great deal. There are better days ahead and Tom will forgive him completely.

I don't give a crap if you put Gable, Cael, both Brands' and Noah's Arc in Ramos' corner. Dennis wrestles at a much higher level than anyone at that weight. There was no way Ramos was gonna beat Dennis whomever coached him. Ramos now knows where the bar is set. Get there or don't plan on being in the Olympics

Have to think if he agreed to do the interview today he intends to apologize. That would be the right thing to do. He handled this situation terribly yesterday.

I have new found respect for Brands. He dealt with a complete mess in a straight forward professional manner with almost no prep time.

Lots of discussion which should be on a matter like this.
Terry Brands has trained Ramos since he came to Iowa college and HWC. He was in Ramos corner.
Dennis has a right to come back and Duore was his coach and in his corner.
If Tony was upset he was family and should have never made the comments just go face to face and then just leave and let the world go on.
What he did is way worse than anything Brands maybe did to him he hurt family.
Tony I believe knew he was going to lose because face it Dennis is a better free style wrestler.
Tony likes attention and he took it all away from Dennis. Now Dennis is the type of person who
does not give a s&&t what Tony does or says he lives a free life.
Tony was wrong and hope he clears it up today. If there is more to this then talk with Brands not the whole dam world. If u had family problems would you throw your family member under the bus with out facing them first?

He has to apologize doesn't he??? If not it's literally career suicide. The wrestling community is so tight knit.

Nuclear bomb just went off in IC. Holy Cow!
TRUTH....Tom Brands is not loyal to his wrestlers and never will be in tough times....There is no way in hell Cael would ever do this to any young man !!!! Tom Ryan is exactly the same way once you get to know him really well....

F) something else:

Ramos walks up, rips off his mask Scooby Doo style and reveals he was really Spyker during yesterday's anti-Brands meltdown ... "and I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids!"

I also thought Tom handled the interview very professionally. What gets lost in all this is Tom got two wrestlers into the finals at the same weight! A huge accomplishment! John Smith mentioned the same thing during the trial broadcast. Imagine two Penn State wrestlers making the finals against each other. We would be talking how well Cael can coach. Instead, Tom is being attacked. I'm guessing The Brand's were happy with what happened until the interview. Doesn't seem right. Even if Ramos has a beef, this should have been handled behind closed doors. Or, at least wait 24 hours to calm down before speaking to the press.

Can't believe Ramos didn't take anything back or apologize in his radio interview so far. Moving on and out to another club (unknown at this time). Had a good talk with Terry last night and there you have it. Only good things to say about Terry. The Dennis thing really was a big burr under his saddle.

Well what do I know. TR just doubled down. Terry should have told him that these public interviews are a bit like ongoing job interviews.

Extremely difficult situation for Brands. Can't help but believe that they should have had a contingency plan in place for this very circumstance.

More important however, is that Ramos does indeed have a right to feel betrayed.

Bad situation across the board, and unfair to BOTH Tony and Tom, I feel bad for both of them.

Even worse, all of the shine and happiness that Dan Dennis should have, is being lost in the shuffle.

Well looks he is gone. Wonder where he will end up. Maybe Michigan State but I can't believe even they would want a guy who throws a family under the bus. Maybe your best bet Tony is go into poltics or maybe just grow up some.,

Be great for the message boards if he went to va tech.

Would love it if Metcalf went to Sparty and Ramos goes to va tech.

Then tom gets fired they bring a triple class to IC to finally reclaim the title in 2024

There is a Latino angle to this story that nobody will talk about.
But Iowa could lose a couple of recruits.

No Tom Brands wanted Tony out and went hard after Dennis..Just shows you exactly what others have been saying about Brands that i know for sure...In hard times he will treat you like crap. Tom Ryan is exactly the same way...Ask Roberts how he was treated at OSU and Haines and they will both tell you. Yes i am a PSU fan but Cael respects every single kid in his room. Go to pratice and you will see. Brands and Ryan have a lot of growing up to do to EVER be in the same conversation as Cael Sanderson....

I think Brands handled it about as well as you could. I do not think Ramos handled it very well. However, I think Ramos has a valid point or 2. If he feels he was lied to or mislead and someone he has been working with and preparing with for this moment is in your opponents corner, that is going to mess with your head. This was a tough situation for all involved and I don't agree with how Ramos aired it all out when he was obviously very emotional, but I think he has legit complaints that could have seriously hurt his chances last night.

Re: Spencer Lee - IMO PSU does not need Spencer to continue its run; however Spencer would really help PSU continue its run. Iowa really needs Spencer to get back into the title hunt.
Spencer and his Dad are very smart and i am sure he don't want his son wrestling for a nut who does not have your back. Heck he has the BEST Coaches, wrestlers. fans, academics in his own back yard...PLUS THE # 1 OLIP CLUB IN THE COUNTRY TO PURSUE HIS DREAMS !!!!
