How would you spend $5 million per year to improve Penn State’s men’s basketball?

from a quick search, I believe that Penn State men’s basketball makes about $5 million in profit each year. For the sake of this discussion, let’s just assume that this is the actual number. Also, let’s say that football revenue alone will pay for all other sports.

Chambers makes roughly $1 million per year. Would you use all of this money to hire a high profile coach?

Are there BJC facility upgrades that you would fund with this money?

Increase the recruiting budget?

Build an over the top basketball practice and support facility?

They could get Carmelo Anthony for about that per year...

If you are being serious, I would hire the. USC cheerleaders for home games to increase the attendance.

You should send Barbour your resume. She needs more people who can turn black ink into red.

They need a new or renovated facility about the size of 7500 seats, New practice facilities, and a new coach. $5 million is a drop in the bucket. Maybe $50 million?

You have an extra $5 million per year to spend, not 50. What would you do with 5?

Thanks for contributing your own thoughts to the conversation, Art. You really advanced the discussion.

Because there is nothing to discuss. First, the overall surplus of the Athletic Department is just over $5mm, so you've wiped it out. There is no way you can make that money back without an enormous increase in ticket prices, even if you sell the BJC out for every home game.

This is an internet message board not a fiscal responsibility class. Where would you spend $5 million per year? Lower ticket cost? Bus in kids for free? Jello wrestling at halftime?

Then why cap the number at $5mm? Make it $20mm, $25mm.. With that kind of money PSU can buy any coach out there. Problem solved

IIRC Chambers contract is not public record , and I couldn't find it when looking for it the other day. Low normal contracts when I looked at the Big, I'd guess he's making $2 million. Apparently 2 million doesn't buy much in the world of college basketball.

Invest more in coaching staff and upgrade some facilities

Because the numbers I saw (from 2017) said our profit was 5 mil. It’s not going to happen, but it’s not a completely arbitrary number.

Probably less. In 2016 his base was less than $580k.

So why not make it open-ended, like "what would it take to make PSU a top 20 program?" How many people know what $5mm buys or doesn't buy?

Pay the spoiled students to show up at the games.

Honestly, a lot of it would depend on what the market is for the job. If I can use it to bring Mick Cronin or Bo Ryan or Oats (and their upgraded staffs), I do it. If it means John Becker or Tim Cluess, I probably keep Pat and invest it upgrades to his coaching staff, non-conf opponents, facilities/marketing, etc.

Ryan is retired. Cronin is problematical. He's from Cincy, went to school there, and makes $2.2mm. To get him, A school would have to offer him way more than Cincy would match. How much that is, I couldn't guess, and evemn then it might not be enough (see Coach K).

Oats is doable. Makes $600k and has no ties to Buffalo.

Ryan hasn’t ruled out a return (at least in his last comments).

Cronin is my dream candidate (and has been for several years). Would 3.5 do it? Maybe (probably not), but then still have half of our imaginary $5 million left.

Oats will be the hottest name out there this spring. Might take Cronin $ to get him too. But from his public comments, they love Buffalo (then again, what else would he say).

Ryan is 71. Even if he comes out of retirement, how much longer is he going to coach?

Couldn't begin to tell you if Cincy could match $3.5mm, but have to believe they'd come awfully close. That probably keeps him there.

ASU got Hurley from Buffalo for $1.4mm. Figure something more than that to break Oats away. $2mm should be more than enough unless a bidding war gets out of hand.

High profile coach without a doubt.

You need to at least double, probably triple that. It cost $88M to build Pegula, what do you think you're going to get for $50M? Nothing worth anything. NW just spent $110M to redo Welch-Ryan. PSU would need to spend at least that much.

Put them back in Rec Hall or let them play in Pegula. Get them out the BJC and open that baby up to more concerts and state HS championships.
