I don’t think many of these posters realize other people don’t look at our games as closely as we do....they will see a 27-6 win and figure we handled the game....they won’t nitpick that we didn’t win it by as much as the fans think we should have.

To some point I agree with you Yorkie. Going into this game I didn't want PSU to run up the score, you know being a "bully." We have already observed many teams doing this to them. I wanted to see a controlled, impose our will, Sportsman like, with a lot of young men getting a chance to play without skipping a beat. Of course that did not happen but we got the win and yes that is 10 wins this year and that's spectacular. Look at one point yesterday there were three true freshman in at Dback and I am not sure of the others. Give them the Rose if that is what the team wants, they got 10 wins they weren't pretty, but also an identity of a championship team that knows how to win.Penn State had a chance to impress today and did everything but. Wisconsin deserves that nod over us IMHO. They travel every bit as well as us and they are earning it on the field. Being 2-2 over the last 4 games and looking lackluster in the 2 wins is not very encouraging.
Good post with a couple of clarifications now that yesterday's games are over ...No way Wisc gets the Rose if they lose the Big Ten Champ game. Three losses, one to a basement dweller and blown out 2x by the top team.
I still think Minne will get the nod over us. From the Rose Bowl site:
Should a team from the Big Ten or Pac-12 be selected to go to the College Football Playoff, the Tournament of Roses will traditionally select the next-highest CFP-ranked team from that conference. There is, however, a caveat to that clause in the contract.
“If the next-highest ranked team is in a ‘cluster’ of teams, meaning there is another team or teams from the same conference ranked within several spots of each other, the Tournament of Roses will select the team from that cluster that will result in the best possible matchup for the Rose Bowl Game,” said Rose Bowl Management Committee Chair Scott Jenkins.
Minne will be within a few spots and they will get chosen, imo. If we stay ahead of Florida and now Bama, we’re Orange Bowl bound.
Kirk Herbstreit is actively advocating Wisconsin to edge out PSU for Rose Bowl consideration. And some of you delusionalists think he likes PSU.
So getting your ass beat by Wisconsin is better than beating Rutgers by three TD’s? It’s funny, if the roles were reversed and we had gotten crushed by Wisconsin and Minny beat Rutgers, posters on here would be saying we blew our shot at the Rose Bowl and we don’t deserve it after our game against Wisconsin. No way Wisc gets the Rose if they lose the Big Ten Champ game. Good post with a couple of clarifications now that yesterday's games are over ...
First of all, all these posters who analyze the SOS, margin of victory, "good losses vs bad losses", home or away wins/losses, blow-outs vs close, etc etc ... are simply wrong when it comes to determining the NY6 non CFP teams.
Yes, those data points are used by the CFP to determine the 4 invitees. Once those 4 teams are picked, the remainder of the NY6 bowl participants are determined by the bowls (conference affiliations along with a couple of other factors which can change from year to year) and ESPN.
Here is the bottom line ... assuming there is no more than a 1 loss differential between eligible teams, the bowls are going to pick the best matchup they want and the final CFP rankings will reflect those results. Let me be specific ..
PSU, MN, and Wisconsin will all be within a few spots of each other in next week's final rankings (assuming WI loses to OSU). So, the Rose bowl has flexibility in determining who to invite. They aren't going to go through that whole analysis of SOS, etc as outlined above. Instead, in conjunction with ESPN and the CFP committee, they will determine the "most attractive" matchups for all of those NY6 bowls (taking into account the pre-determined conference affiliations).
PSU and Wisconsin will trump MN as far as TV ratings, fan followings, etc. MN was a nice Cinderella story after their win over PSU, but their last 2 losses out of 3 games give the NY6 bowls the excuse they need to keep them out and pick either PSU or Wisconsin. So, the Rose will pick either PSU or Wisconsin. But, this will also be done with an eye towards the Orange Bowl and who does the Orange Bowl want to fill their slot against UVA? That is the key question.
If the Orange Bowl wants Alabama, then the Rose will probably pick PSU. But, the Orange Bowl has to consider that Alabama was just there last year (even though in was a semi final game) and Alabama is missing Tua. Will the Alabama fan base be excited to return to Miami to play UVA without Tua in a non CFP game? I am not so sure. So, I think the bowls agree to the following:
Wisconsin to the Rose, unless it is a huge blow out.
PSU to the Orange.
Why not the reverse? Because Wisconsin was in the Orange 2 years ago and hasn't been to the Rose since 2013. PSU was in the Rose 3 years ago but hasn't been to the Orange since 2006.
I do recognize that the Orange Bowl could decide they want Florida instead of PSU, so that would probably put us back in the Rose Bowl with 2 losses instead of Wisconsin with 3 losses.
What?I am assuming Clemson beats UVa ...frankly not sure what happens to Clemson. They probably don't make the CFP and would take a spot in one of the other NY bowls. (which is why Dabo was ranting and raving).
What?
I wasn't sure you were serious. Talking heads be damned, Clemson is in CFPYeah, that is what is being bantered about by the talking heads - Clemson's resume is weak, notably due to their poor conference, but also because a&m, whom they put on the schedule a while back, were weak this year.
Also edited my post to complete my thought on Clemson.
Yeah we don’t deserve because our win wasn’t big enough...but Minny does after getting boat raced by Wisconsin....and Wisconsin does after losing to Illinois. Sometimes our fans are our worst enemies.I have no idea why people here keep saying we don’t deserve the Rose - since when does who deserves what ever have anything to do with College Football - we have been on the wrong side of that stupid argument so many times I have lost count - we beat Rutgres and have OSU their best game of the year so if it’s the arose we damn well deserve it.
Yeah we don’t deserve because our win wasn’t big enough...but Minny does after getting boat raced by Wisconsin....and Wisconsin does after losing to Illinois. Sometimes our fans are our worst enemies.
I understand where you are coming from but, I think the question you ask should be rephrased to: Is it possible that Herbie has an ESPN producer’s hand up his ass squeezing the trigger that makes his chin wag up and down while saying what the producer thinks will create interest, internet discussion and clicks? To that question, the answer is an emphatic YES!Why is everything a zero sum game with people here? It's possible that Herbie both likes PSU and also thinks Wisconsin should go to the Rose Bowl. Why does him believing Wisconsin should go to the Rose Bowl have to mean he hates Penn State?
Jesus Christ, the guy praises PSU up and down and left and right all the time but the second he doesn't bake us a cake he must hate us! You sound like a middle school teenager.
That’s true, but there’s also wording that allows them to take another team if it would be a better game....and apparently Minny getting crushed makes them more desirable than PSU winning by three TD’s...only on this board.I'm getting old... but I thought some nice person posted the contractual terms the rose bowl was bound by in the event the B1G champ goes to CFP.
Specifically that they were obligated to take the higher rated team (as rated by the BCS)... in which case -- presuming minny drops below us this week and osu handles wisky -- we'd likely be that team and be in.
otoh, my memory might be entirely wrong and this was just wishful thinking.
It appears by what was stated in the earlier part of this thread that the Rose has some wiggle room if multiple teams are ranked close to each other but I still think if Wisky loses to OSU we make the most sense for the Rose.I'm getting old... but I thought some nice person posted the contractual terms the rose bowl was bound by in the event the B1G champ goes to CFP.

LOL! ESPN pays $80,000,000 each year to broadcast The Rose Bowl game. If you think that ESPN/ABC (read: Disney), doesn’t have any say over who plays in the game, you have no understanding whatsoever of how things work. The Rose Bowl Committee does not sit down with ESPN - however, they do get input from the Big Ten offices.

ESPN owns and operates14 bowl games this year. 35 bowl games will be broadcast on ESPN/ABC. Their ratings (and attendance) will be dramatically affected by who is chosen to play in The Rose Bowl game. Disney is one of the greatest marketing entities on the planet. They won’t let this decision up to the folks wearing Rose Bowl blazers and in the B1G offices. Trust me!

Doesn’t really matter, Wisconsin won’t keep it close with OSU.Wisky travels well and has Taylor as a marquee player. If Wisky can keep it close (within 14 pints) with OSU, I think Wisky is in Rose. Minny is out of the running. Fan base is too small and tv ratings would be abysmal.
Nobody really deserves it this year. I’d personally give it to MN for the nice story and the head to head victory. If I wanted the best team I would give it to Wisconsin. It will probably go to PSU for money reasons. So getting your ass beat by Wisconsin is better than beating Rutgers by three TD’s? Totally agree!Ding Ding Ding - we have a winner!!!
Although I wouldn't go as far as to say that ESPN is the only enity that determines the matchups for all the NY6 bowls, you have outlined the reason ($$$) why they are certainly a major partner at the table consisting of the Bowls themselves, the Conferences, and ESPN. They factor in the predetermined agreements (i.e. Rose is Big10/Pac 10, etc.) along with some subjective factors such as fan interest, ticket sales, team appeal, geography, etc. They come to a mutual agreement that meets the best interest of all parties (bowls, conferences, and TV) for all NY6 bowls in totality for this particular year. This will vary each year based upon the bowl assignments in the CFP system from year to year. Some years there is more flexibility (at large teams), other years (like this year) there is less flexibility.
There are two things I am 100% confident of - first, the NY6 bowls don't sit back on their hands and wait until the Sunday after the conference games and tune into ESPN to see which teams the CFP committee has signed to their bowl game! Second, the CFP doesn't go to anywhere near the depth of statistical analysis that some posters on this board do in analyzing why one team or another should be assigned to a particular bowl (after they have chosen the 4 invitees). Instead, they (the bowls, the conferences, and ESPN) decide the matchups and then the CFP committee magically ranks the teams so the selections make sense.
That's why they have 80,000,000 reasons to have a say. And in many cases PSU provides higher ratings so we get the benefit of a doubt in many cases.LOL!
