I'm 58 and admit I did not know what the "R" word was.

A CB for the NY Giants was released for using the "R" word in a tweet. Again, I'm 58 so maybe I'm a little behind the times but is there a more appropriate word that could have been used?

Dummie.

The appropriate thing for a professional athlete to do is not even respond. But of course we are talking about Janoris Jenkins who is as dumb as they come.

PC - BS.......I'm 65 and I woudn't have recognize an R word because it obscure to a general population. I don't use it regularly in conversation and as noted above it was used in the past by chidlren as a derogatory comment, in jest or not. Oversensivitity is overtaking normal life.

Anyone see my safe place, I can't find it? We must have been tough to exist in such an insensitive world yet so many of us survived w/o bike helmets, riding in the back of pick up trucks w/o seat belts, etc.

Actually, my guess is that you do know the "R" word. But in today's politically correct society we can't even utter the word, retard, even outside the context of labeling an individual.

Then again - if you don’t want the “n” word thrown in your face (and it is a hurtful word that should never be used), don’t freely use the “r” word.

And for as much atrocities that have been done to people on account of being black/dark-skinned, etc, you can throw in people with intellectual disabilities/special needs. Etc. Throughout the ages, and regardless of their gender, nationality, skin color, etc, they have been abandoned by loved ones, thrown into institutions to rot, abused, debased, sterilized, tortured and killed - and it continues to this day.

So, yeah, how about not making jokes at their expense as they are the least able to defend themselves.

Exactly! You should never direct the word nor decribe anyone using the word retard. And the "n" word should never be uttered.

That reminds me of prior employment where it wasn't uncommon to have to restrain someone who was freakishly strong. Drugs, natural strength, etc. The reason wasn't important but afterward we'd be amazed at their "retard strength".

OFFICIAL LIST OF WORDS THAT SHOULD NEVER BE USED:

1. n-word
2. r-word

Feel free to add to it.

By the way, anyone have an idea about what happens if there is disagreement about whether a word goes on the list?

This give me an idea. You could write a story or an article have have lot of places where you say x-word or y-word. And since you're not actually writing the word, it's ambiguous exactly which words it stands for. And thus the article wouldn't really be exactly one article but potentially many different articles depending on what word people used in place of x-word or y-word.

I was eating at a favorite fast pizza chain two nights ago with my six year old. I love their music, and they’re proud of it - displaying references to it in their restrooms, for example. On came the song “Mongoloid” by DEVO. I’ve probably heard it 50-100 times in my life, and I’ve never felt offended by it, right or wrong. But knowing the basic subject, and wanting the establishment to succeed, I felt compelled to write to them explaining that some people may find it offensive, so they may want to take that into account in their next title review. They wrote back with a thank you saying they would review it. Things have changed for sure in 40 years.

What if one of the words we couldn't used was "word." We'd have to refer to it as the "w-word," except that we couldn't do that because we can't use "word."

Quite the conundrum. Say tech companies take over the world and Microsoft gains ownership of "Word" because of their software. Then they forbid anyone from saying "word". They'll know if anyone does because they'll be watching and listening. As you note, w-word wouldn't work. Maybe w-w??

OSU wanted the rights to the freakin' word "the". Penn State now has limited use of "Happy Valley", which I still find ridiculous. Anyway, back to the real topic.......
