Top recruit quits wrestling his senior year and joins the Navy. 125 runner up last year moves up to 133.It’s astounding to me that Iowa doesn’t have a ranked 125 lber. Is there a story to this with which I’m not familiar?

Every instinct Tom ever has . . . ends up being wrong. He really needs better leaders in his life.
Is your ban over already ? 😉Every instinct Tom ever has . . . ends up being wrong. He really needs better leaders in his life.
It may be difficult to believe, but not all Permanent Suspensions are permanent. Is your ban over already ? 😉
Welcome back MontellIt may be difficult to believe, but not all Permanent Suspensions are permanent.
This is why James Franklin is very careful paying huge NIL money to portal guys, they have to fit within the current NIL structure on the team or you have problems.I have no clue of Drake's motivations clearly, but based purely on speculation I would think long term if you bring in 3-5 guys every year on a big NIL/Portal bag, eventually that's going to cause friction with the original recruits who might have got none or less. I also don't think a constant focus on money as the biggest deciding factor will attract 'properly' motivated stars. Clearly Carl has said if it's money that is most important to your decision, then PSU is probably not the place for you. I don't hear T&T saying that.
We may see a period of in house free agency a across the NCAA for the kids who are not content.
I hope our team doesn't go down that route and it certainly is looking like going forward at PSU your opportunity for money will be set mainly with your initial recruitment. Get the best to start, get them paid, and then keep the best.
No doubt we will lose some kids probably even next year due to being caught in a log jamb, but Otherwise most of the best come to PSU because it's the best place to beb for their wrestling, not the highest payer.
Iowa's strategy and draw is taking on the different form, and I think the constant flow of new high paid vets will hurt the culture and cohesion. You ready what you sow.
No doubt Drake could get a top dollar bag, but if I had to guess rumors of his departure are more of a negotiating tool to get more money to stay in house.
Thanks, my wife just walked in the room to see if I kicked off.
Tom & Terry will work their development magic. They’ll turn them into bench guys and grab a portal guy to brag about in post match pressersYbarra was the #16 overall recruit per Flo in 2020. Cruz was #33 in 2022.
Slumlord Bob tried to poach every 125 in the country and they all said no.It’s astounding to me that Iowa doesn’t have a ranked 125 lber. Is there a story to this with which I’m not familiar?
I don't want Iowa beaten in three weeks-I want them demolished, dispirited and embarrassed.

If they’re still considering RS for Ferrari, this would be a really dumb match to burn one of his 5 appearances.Arnold, not Ferrari out at 184 and gets a pin.
Cael has had coaches and other school's athletes in his room during the season.I know... and then you had Cael allowing wrestlers and coaches from all over the country into his room for events like trials and All Star matches. Weird the two think so differently huh?
This is not how it is being handled, and there are no plans to handle recruitment and NIL this way.it certainly is looking like going forward at PSU your opportunity for money will be set mainly with your initial recruitment.
You mean like this?Cael has had coaches and other school's athletes in his room during the season.
Or maybe like this..Cael has had coaches and other school's athletes in his room during the season.
I have been in that room watching Snyder working out when he wrestled at OSU, and Gwiz when he wrestled at NCST.
Yeah, Iowa sucks at recruiting and couldn't buy anybody good to fill the spot. Tom and Terry Brands ran that program into the ground. It’s astounding to me that Iowa doesn’t have a ranked 125 lber. Is there a story to this with which I’m not familiar?
Yeah, wording could have been better, my intent was mainly focused on the strategy of NIL being focused organically (i.e. your own recruits) vs the portal. I am sure we will continue to have some portal kids inbound here and there, but not to the same proportion as Oky St, Iowa and Mich has over the past 2 years. This is not how it is being handled, and there are no plans to handle recruitment and NIL this way.
I’m all in on corner wrestlers joining the Navy, no matter how big they are. That top recruit was never going to be a 125 tbf

I believe it is flo that has a docu. on Metcalf. It's a good one. What happened with Metcalf?
I know for a fact that Snyder was going against Nick Nevills in the PSU room while they both were still on their respective college teams. My understanding is that the NCAA rules don't allow for cross-contamination in practicing college sports, but having the OTC's provides a legal workaround.I have been in that room watching Snyder working out when he wrestled at OSU, and Gwiz when he wrestled at NCST.

Sunken cost fallacy can be a real b*tch. You almost wonder if Ira blew smoke up his ass. 😆Nicolls gets really testy when his band-aid approach to roster building gets even slightly criticized.
Yes, of course, and we’ve been as successful as Iowa has been with them, which is to say Truax had the lowest finish of his career with us last year, but we still set the record without him. That’s par for the course for short term rentals, and for Penn State. The portal is there and it’s a tool that every successful program should try to use to their advantage, but I distinguish between short term rentals like Truax and guys with multiple years left like Mesenbrink or Caliendo on Iowa’s side. The long term guys who will be with the program for 3+ years are more like re-recruits than short term fixes and are guys you can build around just like a regular recruit. The one year grad transfers are just mercenaries meant to plug a hole, not a long term program-building strategy. Suriano is the only one-year grad transfer I can think of who actually won a national title, or even improved over his prior finishes. We’ve done one year rentals too. Heck, we’ve even done one semester rentals.
Suriano doesn't really count because he was a returning national champ.Suriano is the only one-year grad transfer I can think of who actually won a national title, or even improved over his prior finishes.

Last year, Davison and Gomez made the finals, and Olejnik made 5th (up 3 spots).
But it's not super common, and it'll get much rarer next year when the Covid year is history.
They clearly should have sunk their $$$ into coaches rather than rentals. I see little to no open recognition over there that OSU may not be in the rear view mirror as soon as season’s end.Nicolls gets really testy when his band-aid approach to roster building gets even slightly criticized.
