iowa v princeton

Just got a chance to watch most of the matches. Lee looked great and has probably as good a chance as Nolf to go wire to wire in bonus wins. Glory actually wrestled well but couldn't stop any of those tilts. Shame that match had to end when it did, I think had Glory not given up all those early points he could've kept it close.

DeSanto (whose name both announcers appended an "s" to, for no apparent reason) looked solid but it's not like we learned much; his test will come when he faces equal competition and whether at that point he can restrain himself from losing it.

I thought Lugo looked good against Kolodzik, despite what everyone else is saying. Kolodzik deserves that #1 ranking.

Huge drop off from what Zain brought to the table, then again.... he's our GOAT. Can't wait to see how Berge performs against any of the top 4. No ecpectations beyond low AA, but I am eager to guage what he can bring to the table.

PR says 7940, but I havent been able to find out yet, if it was an ice storm or high school football playoffs that caused the low figure.
Remember last year when you kept calling out Iowa for attendance? Then the facts got presented to you? I remember.

That being said i think attendance will be down a bit this year. Iowa doesn't have a strong home schedule whatsoever unfortunately. Also Having Kemerer, Warner and Stoll out doesn't help to put butts in the seats.

what are you talking about presented to me? That iowa had the highest attendance? I dont remember that presentation, or how I handled that reveal. maybe you can share with me again?

As for the attendance of course they did, will and should. Every.Year.

Bud, if you need some ointment for your itch let me know and Ill send you some.

Did you ever consider the proposition that he is the best recruiter *because* he is the best coach?
How about he is a great coach *because* he is the best recruiter? Nolf, Cenzo, Hall, Nickal all win titles wrestling in the West Gym at UNI. No?

um, NO.. Nolf turns into Sorensen , Cenzo buckles like Marinelli his freshman year, Hall is a proverbial Gilman Bridesmaid rather than shocking the world as true freshman and Nickal would still be trying to figure out what UNI Does? and The entire time Evans would not be Impressed.

Cenzo and Kem Dog went to OT in highschool, very even before heading into college...but Cenzo is looking for a 3rd straight Natty while Kem has yet to reach a final yet and this year isn't looking likely either. Cael might be able to coach as well as he can recruit, no?

but the success of this season was set in place 4 years ago and it was worked day in and day out. That is a program, a staff, and dare I say a plan.

So the last 10 years it took over 35-40 years for all the wise or smart people in Pa. to finally realize to get the best recruits to wrestle and win national titles..Then some of you keep trying to tell everyone how smart you are...With all the talent you have out your way should have more titles than Okl State lmao..

i fully understand the animosity from iowa fans toward cael/psu - it's a sport and fans are fans. but i will never, ever understand how anyone with a straight face can claim cael and psu win simply because they recruit best.

1) an obvious one - not every blue chipper (Top 20) spells multiple titles. Just as the Altons didn't, Singletary didn't, Fox Baldwin didn't, Derek Garcia, Chance Marsteller, Bryce Brill, and on and on
2) Ohio State has the same average recruiting class ranking over the last decade
3) PSU guys haven't just won, they've won at a ridiculous clip, and they've been utterly dominant. like to the extent that many of them are in 'all time' and hodge conversations. since cael got to psu, they've won 87% of their ncaa semi's and 72% of their finals.
4) Expectations for a blue chipper isn't 'win three national titles'. or at least they shouldn't be by anyone rational. Expectations should be what Anthony Ashnault, Jason Welch, or Micah Jordan is/have been. No rational, sensible human being had Vincenzo Joseph winning 2 titles in his first two years. I watched Zain wrestle a close match at Ironman and pull out an OT miracle against Joey Galasso at powerade as a SR. the next year he beat logan stieber. the next 3 years he was a hodge finalist. that's not just pedigree. that's pedigree + coaching.

questioning Cael & Co's ability to coach borders on insanity. frankly, the data suggest he's among the best coaches of all time.

Well I hope Cael can coach up Hall this year..Hall has faced the Arz dude 11 times in free style and folk style and Arz. is 10-1 with him...The one Hall won was his national final his freshman year which i saw live and was gift given to him by the offical's

They can't. They're all willfully ignorant or disingenuous or trolls, or some combination thereof. Message boards merely allow them to self-identify as such.

A gift?? You mean like giving two points for a takedown is a gift? Giving 4 points when the guy is on his back for 10 seconds is a gift? When a replay clearly shows a headgear grab and the refs call it 100% correctly....that is a gift? Here is a real gift...…...First..."That ARZ Dude" has a name......it is Zahid Valencia ...and he is really good...…..Second......Hall defeated Zahid in the Semi-Finals....he defeated Bo Jordan in the finals. My gift to you is facts..... You are welcome :)

Well, there's this:

http://www.westyorkwrestlingalumni.com/patoncaachamps.htm

PA certainly has produced great wrestling talent for a long time. But Penn State isn't the only school over the years which has benefited from that talent. The chart shows about 30 different schools who have had a PA guy win a D1 NCAA tournament. There are 12 schools in PA alone which have put a PA wrestler on the top spot on the podium.

There is no other state which comes anywhere close to such a spreading of the wrestling wealth.

That is what I said..Pa. has always had tough high school wrestling and like your article in your post pointed out how so many schools used yours kids to win with..All I really said was funny it took your University so long to find a coach to keep the talent inside.

minnhawk - that's what people in PA have complained about for generations.

interesting though, isn't it, that at about precisely the time that cael went to psu for the pa talent, wrestling recruiting, resources, and video made the landscape such that things were more reliable nationally. cael has chosen a lot of 'national' guys over some of the in-state prospects.

Gifted by the officials? Do you mean they should not have penalized Valencia for using the headgear as a hand grip for a snap? Or maybe you are referring to not calling Mark for stalling as time ran down in the third against BoJo despite BoJo not taking a shot, but rather pushing and hoping for a call?
Which gift would you be referencing?

In today's wrestling world, with Iowa battling tooth and nail for the top spot in the race for third it is much easier to root for PA kids wearing a Hawk singlet.
Nitlion6... it's going on a decade now and I don't think Hawk fans have caught on. Maybe the Bael comments, slush fund comments and Vodka's existence... are indicative of them knowing their relevance. Third isn't as bad as hanging your very existence on one wrestler and posting his results on HR for all the Hawk nuts to see. How times have changed... for those in reality.

QUOTE: "Questioning Cael & Co's ability to coach borders on insanity." - Thanks for the set up WS.

I know this much- Brent Metcalf would sure as hell of had more that 2 NCAA titles had he went with Cael instead of Brands. Thomas Gilman would have had at least one title with Cael. Brands seems to help average guys become really good, but he also has a way of making great guys become really good as well. Cael makes great guys really great. Spencer Lee started out really great, and it makes me sad knowing he is better now than he will be as a senior.

I don't know and my comment wasn't meant to knock TnT as coaches, my point was simply that in addition to recruiting, Cael & Co. can also coach em up. IMO, as Willie and others have pointed out, just because a guy is top 20 out of highschool doesn't mean he's going to be a multi time champ, but Cael's achieving these kind of results more often than anyone else in the country with the guys he brings in. There are a lot of great coaches out there, I just think its funny that Hawkeye fans can't/wont' acknowledge that Cael can coach too.
