Is this game in danger of not being a sellout?

I can’t believe I’m seeing Penn State fans down playing a playoff game. To say the regular season game versus Ohio State is bigger is laughable. This is a win or your done. The Ohio State game was only for seeding. I really hope the major of the fan base does feel this way. It’s pretty embarrassing in my opinion. I can see if you can’t attend the game but don’t down play the important of it. Right now Penn State is one of 12 that has a shot at the National Title and each of these games are very important.

It's a game we should win easily against an inferior opponent that probably shouldn't even be in the playoff.
those downplaying it expect to win--easily. If not, there's major issues. Just like we should beat Boise
Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Ohio State, Tennessee, Notre Dame--those are big games
If this was Bama instead of SMU prices would be quadrupled

You are afflicted with the same disease as Lando. When you are proven wrong you change your assertion from “biggest game” to “big game.” It doesn’t work for Little Lando and it’s not working for you.
This is one stupid argument. Big game or biggest game, who the heck cares. It is totally subjective and there is no objectively correct answer.

I am trying to get through this stupid argument to figure out how many tickets short of a sell out we are but it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. How many tickets remain unsold?

I can’t tell either

All opponents are important in the playoffs. I don’t care if it’s Bama, Boise St, SMU or Georgia. I hope the team doesn’t have the same mentality as you. Take it one game at a time and just win and move on. I could care less about the ticket prices and people want to go or not. But the ones down playing the important because it’s SMU and not Bama is laughable.

Yes, I agree--they're important but the anticipation and excitement is different for weaker opponents
Fans don't play--they should have expectations--SMU is not our level--we know all it.
Win and move on--losing isn't acceptable.
We all know we have the easiest path arguably in the history of sports to make the semis of a postseason tournament--time to take care of business. We win by three scores
Also, and I know not many people here follow FCS--see how their rounds go with matchups like this. They're usually not close. The home team is expected to win and win easily.

Sadly, the "biggest game" was probably the horrible loss to Michigan in 97, Two undefeated teams ranked 2 and 4. '05 Ohio State and '82 Nebraska are probably the top 3
Playoff game makes this more important but it's still SMU

Just to add '85 Bama (I think 85) and '82 Pitt in the mix as well

I think trying to rank a game like this in comparison to others is a silly exercise.

Suffice it to say this is a huge game. Moreover, the stakes are arguably higher than any home game ever...not just because it's a first-of-its-kind playoff and we need to win to advance but also because of the pressure on Franklin and the program, some of it unfair, to finally win a "big game." God forbid we lose this one as 9-point favorites and then have 8 long months to listen to the same finger-pointing lines in an endless loop.

All this said, whether there's 100,000 people in the seats or 106,000 will have zero bearing on the final outcome.

I don’t take any team lightly and I’m sure the team/coaches aren’t either.

You realize winning this doesn't change the "big game" narrative. The national belief is we have the easiest schedule in the history of the world. And they're right--we couldn't have got an easier path if we were allowed to pick who we play.

Losing isn't acceptable nor should it be discussed. He wins or else he's not ever going to accomplish anything meaningful here. You can't lose a home playoff game if 6 people were there

You're not on the team
This is a layup--it's okay to acknowledge that
Do you follow FCS football?
Yes I do but Penn State needs total fan support. Not fans with an attitude of we should win by 3 touchdowns because we are home and not playing Bama. We all know what a huge home field advantage Penn State has when the fans are engaged. I hope the ones that could go are loud as hell.

We have fan support--we have over 100k going
Do you think ND fans aren't expecting to win by 3 scores?
And, yes, you following FCS means you understand what typically happens when #3 hosts #10 in the playoff--it's not different here. SMU is outclassed--we have to take care of business but this isn't a "we need to bring our best game to win" situation. This is a dream scenario every coach and team wants in their first ever playoff game.
The fans will be great--unless we struggle--then they'll turn quickly

So now we're not just bagging on the fans staying home, but on the fans that are going because they might be too complacent?
Christ we can find anything to worry about. I'd expect the fans that are making the effort to be there to be loud af. I don't think this is going to draw a ton of the down in front contingent of our fanbase.

Truthfully I think Indiana will beat ND on Friday. These 12 teams in the playoffs aren’t any weak teams. Really no team stands out as that much more dominant than the rest. I think that is why Vegas has the line right around a TD except the Texas/Clemson game. And who is to say Clemson couldn’t beat Texas. Penn State is favored by 8.5 right now so if you takeoff the 3 point bump for being at home the line is really Penn State favored by 5.5. I think Penn State is the better team but they have to show up and play their game. Trust me I hope for a 3 TD win but I think it will be lower but a win. That’s all that matters

Guess they wouldn’t watch us vs Boise State either

My original post was about the down play of this playoff game. The one poster stated the regular season game versus Ohio State was bigger. That is laughable. I just said I hope not all fans feel this way because we are playing SMU instead of Bama. It doesn’t matter who Penn State is playing it’s a playoff game and you win or go home. Not much bigger at this moment.

If Indiana beats ND Freeman might be killed lol. I hope you're right but that has blowout written all over it.
Yes there are weak teams when comparing them to Oregon Georgia Texas Penn State
I think you're giving teams too much credit but we'll see this weekend. Remember in FCS this weekend was 1-8...the top team won by almost 27 points on average....it should be the same this weekend unless Sark, CJF and Freeman fail miserably. Now of them should lose.

When you say "easiest schedule," I assume you're talking about our potential playoff path.

In any case, a win on Saturday may not erase the "big-game" narrative overnight but it puts a dent in it and eases some of the pressure on Franklin.

Lando, be careful not to confuse "national belief" with your personal belief. The notion that beating SMU is meaningless does not reflect a "national belief" nor for that matter is it even a media narrative.

Rather, it's a statement of your personal opinion which unfortunately lacks a certain amount of credibility given your long track record of poor-mouthing our opponents and downplaying our victories over them.

I just like Indiana coach and offense. I think they will be very motivated to win this game. Plus I don’t know what ND will do if they have to pass the ball. Riley Leonard is a heck of a running QB but if they fall behind can he get it done passing. That is my opinion might be their downfall. Truthfully that is my only upset in the first round.

Can a game be bigger than the opponent? I'd argue as an opponent OSU is a bigger than SMU in a vacuum, but context matters and yes this is a bigger game.

I also strongly believe, if we win, the naysayers who knock Franklin will say this was not a big game in retrospect because of the opponent. They're not an AP top 10 team, so even if they win, he'd still sit at 3 ap top ten wins.

About 3,000 as of now.

I agree 100%, the game is bigger than the opponent. College Playoff game will always be bigger than a regular season game. Regular season games are important but more so for seeding or entry into the playoffs. Every time Penn State plays Ohio State it will be a big game. But this one is a win and advance for the chance of the ultimate goal a National Championship.

Wrong... The average price does matter. Money matters and who make them the most.

The CFP doesn't give two shits about resale price...

This game will have the most tickets sold of any game this weekend and the only team that will ever surpass that number would be if Michigan hosted a game.

I like Cignetti--I just think it's going to be a lot like the OSU game. They just can't hang with the talent level gap.
I hop you're right though--huge Hoosier fan on Friday

We’re being mocked for this as we should

He also thinks the winner of this game goes on to play arizona state....

The big ten ccg prices weren't low because of us.

Clemson/Texas at $108 is more damning considering how much bigger Austin is, how much easier it is to get to, how many more hotels they have and how much better the weather is. 63 and sunny in Austin on saturday. Hotels under $150 a night.
