The other consideration is its more likely PSU has 6 finalists than just 5.The funniest part about Vodka's take is in his mind it is reasonable to assume Iowa with no champions (1 finals appearance) in their lineup will have 5 finalists, while Penn State with 5 champions (8 finals appearances) in their lineup it is a stretch to think they might have 5 again.
Question is, is this an impressive win a month from now? Miklus missed last year, it is early in the season, maybe Miklus is not back in form? Maybe in a month, Miklus demonstrates that he is wrestling good, thus good win.
A few years ago beating Tsirtis would have been considered an impressive win, now he is not even a starter. Just sayin.
I would be surprised if PSU gets 5 finalists again this year. PSU had the perfect tournament last year.
People are calculating PSUs points as if they're a lock for 5 champs again.
If PSU only gets 2 champs this year which I think is a realistic scenario, then Iowa can contend and win this year.
If PSU pulls 5 champs again, then yeah no one is touching them.
I just see a very realistic scenario where PSU does not repeat.
I beg your pardon, but Dixon would be about 4th team in our room. But he is OU's starter....People are doing the Iowa hypothetical as if Warner's easy win over Willie Miklus is more meaningful in predicting his likely outcome as a true frosh than his overtime squeaker 90 minutes earlier over an Okie State backup with a four-year record of 30 wins and 39 losses. I would guess it's somewhere in between, which could amount to not a lot of points in Cleveland.

Here are comments about Nick Lee from the Clarion Open on this board.People are doing the Iowa hypothetical as if Warner's easy win over Willie Miklus is more meaningful in predicting his likely outcome as a true frosh than his overtime squeaker 90 minutes earlier over an Okie State backup with a four-year record of 30 wins and 39 losses. None of those Nick Lee comments were posted on the HR.Here are comments about Nick Lee from the Clarion Open on this board.
“He is mini Zain. Not going on a limb here but I guarentee he’ll be our guy in March”
“Lee is straight up mauling guys this tournament. Tough in all areas. I know it's not the greatest competition but he's really looking good on top for a FR”
“Wow did Nick Lee look like Nolf there. Complete and utter destruction. Next up is #10 Zacherl in the finals.”
“I've seen Nick Lee wrestle many times since his frosh year in HS. I've seen him destroy many guys, but WOW! Shoop was an NCAA Qualifier,no?”
“I keep upping my prediction on nick...He is no doubt a top 3 at 141!!!! I now think he is absolutely a champion after a season of improvement....IE- see Hall, and even V Joseph...and yes I know he is a true freshman but being at PSU as long as he has he is no ordinary true freshman!!! THIS KID IS FOR REAL!!!!
Edit- That loss does not change my mind..he will figure it out and looked great!!!”
“Zacherl without a single stall call in that match. Had to be in Clarion.
Block, block, block. Two nice reattack doubles in the second as Nick just is a little too aggressive here.
Not much I would be worried about. Kid still is going to be great.”
And he lost in the final to the 10th ranked wrestler. Warner beats a 2 time AA and a guy currently ranked third and gets no credit cause Miklus is overrated and coming off an injury which is a year old. So the only reason to downgrade the win is because he wrestles for Iowa? Makes no sense.
I agree to a point. I’m not expecting PSU fans to gush over an Iowa guy on your own board even though one of your fans started the thread. I just don’t agree with people claiming one guy is like Zain and Nolf because he teched a couple guys ranked in the 100s but another guy MAJORS the third ranked guy at his weight and there has to be something wrong with Miklus. No reason to overhype 1 guys results and downplay another’s because of the school they represent. This goes for both fan bases, not just directed at you guys.None of those Nick Lee comments were posted on the HR.
You have to admit this thread has been relatively tame and polite considering it is the PSU. Imagine the blowback if someone posted how great Nick Lee looked as a topic on the HR. Couple of guys heads would blow off and the over under for GTFO posts would be 23.5. Smart money on the under because they can't get to 24 in Iowa.

Agreed -- let's do better than this. That is not what happened in Hershey. Why assign false motives to the fans?I couldn't believe people booed Spencer Lee at states and cheered when he lost. One of the greatest wrestlers to step foot on a Pa. mat gets booed?? Because he didn't sign with PSU.....really not cool....very weak ......[snip] let's do better.
I am the guy that started the thread. I did so because I have been watching Warner wrestle for a while and thought his motor and quickness were pretty special. Partly because of him....I rated Iowa's 2017 recruiting class as #1. He doesn't "Look" that strong and I was a little concerned he might have trouble with big 197 lbers. That no longer concerns me.....hence the thread. I have been a PSU fan since I was 10. I didn't graduate from PSU but I am still a fan....a Sports Fan. I call them as I see them. I try not to throw hate or criticize kids. I couldn't believe people booed Spencer Lee at states and cheered when he lost. One of the greatest wrestlers to step foot on a Pa. mat gets booed?? Because he didn't sign with PSU.....really not cool....very weak. I am a PSU fan....but also a sports fan. My advice.....root for your team and stop the blatant nasty vitriol towards scUM or Iowa or Rutgers etc. Justifying it with "They did it first" or "They do it worse" is 5th grade stuff......and that may be an insult to 5th graders......let's do better. Peace

Did you really drop "scUM" in a sentence where you were lecturing people to be nicer?I am the guy that started the thread. We still should be allowed to make fun of Pitt.

Yes.....I purposely put that in there because it has been used recently on BWI threads to insult Michigan. Pointing it out as an example of nasty vitriol.......ie....not acceptable in my view.
Don't have to watch the video because I was there and it is quite obvious you weren't with your take but I get that the ride from Cedat Falls may be too long so I'll give you a pass.Sorry......I wish I could agree with you but the video of the match is quite clear. That is exactly what happened in Hershey. Watch the video. Check Spencer Lee's comments. It was not a good look. I am certain ( I hope ) that it was not the reflection of the majority....but it definitely happened.

And I prefer not to have my take colored listening to the comments of an 18 year old kid who just lost for the first time in the biggest match of his career as the crowd gave a standing ovation for his opponent. Tough spot for him but his view of what happened up there is a little skewed.
Especially because the overdog a year before had been a little cheap at the end of their match that year and was known for throwing his headgear when he didn’t crush a guy as much as he thought he should have.Everyone cheers for an underdog, human nature isn't it?

I imagine psychologists would disagree with you. Emotions often cloud our judgment and perceptions.I'm sure Spencer's take on how people reacted to his loss is a little more accurate than yours as a fan in one corner of the arena.
No, they would have cheered for a four time undefeated wrestler or the slayer of a 4-timer. The fact that they would cheer for David on the one hand, and Goliath on the other hand is common in sports. You're telling me if Lee was committed to PSU, Desantos would have got a standing o? That's a laugh.
Desanto never beat KolatI'm sure Spencer's take on how people reacted to his loss is a little more accurate than yours as a fan in one corner of the arena. Or are you more aware of what people said to Spencer than he is?
Also, was there really a standing o? That's insane/ridiculous if so. I've only seen standing o in Iowa for 4 timers. A standing o because Desantos beat the most storied hs wrestler in PA history when he was injured and sick?
Yeah keep trying to convince yourself people reacted that way out of support for Desantos and not as a spite bc Lee committed to Iowa.

Depending on the circumstance yesIs it common for a one time champ to get a standing o?
When he beats an undefeated wrestler, yes! Did Larry Owing get a standing ovation when he beat a 181-0 Dan Gable to become a one time champ? I don't know, but I reckon he did.Is it common for a one time champ to get a standing o?
Depending on the circumstance yes
Probably more a reflection of the Iowa fan than the merit of such an action.Lol I've been to the state tournament in Iowa probably 23 times and don't recall ever seeing a standing o for anything other than 4x champ.
Probably more a reflection of the Iowa fan than the merit of such an action.
No more or less than people cheering for Gable to lose against Owing. Such is life. I honestly don't believe more than a few people used the PSU angle to boo Spencer. Mountain meet molehill. You're going to sit here and tell me straight faced that no one in that arena was celebrating Spencer Lee losing out of spite to him signing with Iowa?
