You need to go to the Iowa board for some grins. Ihawkered9times said that Cael could only recruit. He said that the reason Cael is successful is because of his shamefull over the top aggressiveness in recruiting. He said Brands has too much dignity to go to a recruit's house at midnight and compares that to a Harbaugh sleepover.o_O

Too funny, Cael dominates for the very reasons he listed when he came to PSU as to why he took the PSU job (e.g., Coaching at PSU and having the recruiting advantage of Pennsylvania would give him the edge that would allow him to build a dynasty and dominate Iowa - the very recruiting Iowa typically held over his Iowa State teams.). IOW, Cael "flipped the table" on Iowa and stated as much when he took the PSU job - what I find most amusing is that the Iowa dopes laughed at Cael's statements and rationale for taking the PSU job and leaving ISU....not only laughed at him, but mocked him saying that being able to recruit Pennsylvania would make no difference and Iowa would dominate him and to believe the ability to recruit Pennsylvania as his new school's home state was ridiculous.... Something tells me they aren't laughing at Cael's statements now!

The MN board pulls this type of crap all of the time, too...
You know, because the Gophs are super fun and exciting to watch and have won a national title in the last 15 years.

I especially liked the post that says we "lost" Ethan Lizak. Hahahaha. They know that Pa puts out more than 4-5 good wrestlers a year, don't they?

I like the 'ol: "He was lucky he had Taylor and Ruth, that will never happen again!" Um, Zain and Nolf are pretty close and here comes Hall and Suriano!

Don't ya know? He's just really good at recruiting. You know, showing up at midnight at somebody's house ....

Well, given the 180 degree turnaround that Cael achieved in his very first year with a roster that he largely inherited from TS...then going on to win 4 consecutive NCs....and now reloading as the odds-on favorite for a 5th in 6 years.....I'd say his "talent evaluation" skills, including getting all your best talent on the mat at weights they can win at without cancelling each other out (e.g., "talent management"), is pretty damn good which is a big part of recruiting (e.g., "talent evaluation" and being able to correctly assess what piece of the jigsaw puzzle they fit). However, it goes well beyond "just recruiting" and speaks to his ability to "manage the program" with vision and acumen. He's made some bold calls, like the redshirts last year - and not just Nico and Zain, but the trFR N&N borthers as well - but those bold calls have paid off in spades which is the mark of a great program manager and talent evaluator.

Has he really done that? I remember a FB recruit PSU lost to ND because the ND coaches showed up at a "God awful hour of the morning". That recruits Momma should have said, "If you expect me to cook you breakfast, you best get out of my house and go to IHOP."

You mean instead of his being the greatest recruiter in the history of college wrestling?

Would include Bo Nickal in the new lineup of point scoring machines.

Perhaps we will be able to include Nick Nevills at some point too.

Jammen, just wondering: when will you return the favor and let Tognetti use your pic as his avatar?

Don't use a few idiots to paint MN fans as all idiots. Cael had the perfect storm and he has kept it rolling. 01,02 and 07 were in the last 15 years correct?

Cael had the perfect storm and he has kept it rolling.

If perfect storm means:

1. Solid recruiting
2. Ability to motivate individuals to reach their potential
3. Builds team chemistry and an environment where teammates help each other improve
4. Constant improvement of wrestlers through better technique
5. Emphasis on action, bonus points, pins
6. Conditioning to peak in March
7. Ability to build an exception coaching and training staff

Then yes, perfect storm.

Of course he can recruit. He can recruit guys who can AA and support the NC contenders to win a team championship.

Poll those same guys to find out their opinion of wrestlers on our team like.......Conaway, Beitz, English, McCutcheon, and MATT BROWN. Yes that's Matt Brown who finished high school ranked as the 10th best 145-pound wrestler in the nation. That's not DT and Mark Hall Pedigree.

I'm sure we can work on other examples, but I'll stop there....

And yet Penn State with the #1,3,3,3,4,5,7, and 22nd ranked overall best recruits in the nation on their roster were beaten 17-16 the last time they met Minny (5, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 29 top overall recruits.)

That is just too easy to return serve on....c'mon you can do better.

Not sure what your point is. Of those recruits, over half (Nico, Zain, Nolf, Nickal and Nevills) were being redshirted. But you already knew that.

Wasn't meant as a disrespect in any way. The things you listed are certainly part of the puzzle. More pieces as well. Cael has redefined the standard.

Every once in a while even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

The one trick pony strikes again. You may need your one straw to grasp on for many years to come. Luckily for us we don't wrestle Minny this year as I'm sure they would put the beat down on us. :p

No worries. Just tired of the 'Cael only wins because he recruits' threads elsewhere. This ENTIRE team wrestles so much different than other team that its clearly coaching that is making some of the difference. Lots of threads on other boards about their own wrestllers that say: 'where's the offense?' ... 'this wrestler used to be more aggressive, what happened?'. Cael definitely gets great recruits but that's partially BECAUSE he has shown he is a great coach, often maximizes their potential, and the boys on the team will work hard for him. Anybody that has ever coached can see what's happening here. I've seen many teams across many sports with the "best" recruits that totally under perform. Also, high school rankings are very overrated.

If that is the case, then tell Cael to stop recruiting the #1 kids in the nation.
News flash: the #1 kids in the nation are widely recruited. The real complaint is Cael being so good at landing them.

Haha! It's like the 2nd and 3rd waves of the Tsunami being bigger than the first. So sorry.

Well clearly Cael can coach lights out -- there have been lots of coaches that have had the Pennsylvania Talent Advantage, but even so, there is only one Pennsylvania coach that took that talent advantage and ran off four consecutive National Championships in his first 5 years at a Pennsylvania Program and about to make it 5 National Championships in his first 7 years at a Pennsylvania Program. I'd say that's pretty strong evidence that he not only knows how to evaluate talent, but he knows how to develop it and deploy it.

Maybe beat Minny in a dual?
