I think it is used because of sports like football where post FR redshirts are more rare. Once a guy plays as a TRFR it seems like it never turns back in football.
Knowledgeable fans, from all sports, will get it. Just backing away and reading the words from a new fan perspective, and it's counter-intuitive.

Nick Lee grey shirted (shit it's still early on the west coast) 2 years ago. He wasn't officially on the team. Same as Brooks, Seth, Joe Lee & Beard all of whom can redshirt next year or later if they chose.

pretty sure gifs and memes were created for posts like this.

Although I do award you points for keeping your thoughts under 10,000 words in this post.

Seems after reading this all the way out, your chance at a blue check mark is certainly held back by this thread. My advice is to have it blown up, so the committee can not find record of it in the future.

Actually I don't think the Lee's "grey shirted". They skipped their senior seasons to be home
schooled and practice with the NLWC. The others mentioned did.

Does anyone know/heard why he is transferring? Not that it matters, just that Im curious. Most times it's fairly obvious(no spot in lineup, grad school, coach leaves, etc) but I hadnt read any specifics about this yet.

I think you actually nailed it .... in football once you start playing you never go back to redshirt. So while not literally losing (“burning”) the right to redshirt, since it almost never happens when a guy takes the field as a frosh it is effectively saying “I ain’t taking any years off”. In wrestling with lineup juggling and weight moves and stuff the phrase is misleading for sure

Didn't a few people just defer enrollment? Are we calling that a grey shirt as well now?

Grey shirting is a recruiting term that is not as commonly used as the term redshirting. A grey shirt is an incoming college freshman who postpones his enrollment in classes until the second term of his freshman year. This means they don’t take classes until the winter term. The NCAA allows college athletes five years to complete four years of eligibility after initial enrollment.

Some of Our boys didn't enroll at all.

i always thought that was the definition of a grey shirt.
Yes, deferred enrollment = grayshirt.

That is how it generally works for football (although they could enroll part time), but greyshirting covers any athlete that does not enroll full time the first year after graduation high school.

So basically grey shirting is like taking a gap year. You know, that thing kids do after high school so they can travel to Europe and do all kinds of cool things before college. Just in this case the kids are training to reach a goal and achieve a dream.

"Delayed" enrollment, not deferred enrollment...y'all are defining it ok, just wanted to share the NCAA language.

isn't this sort of what Ricky Williams did while he was in the NFL? LOL

Is RBY going to shirt?

Too many factors to consider, what are his academic goals? How’s the weight management going, would he like to add bulk and bump up eventually? How does he finish this season? What does Cael have planned? Not everyone wants to be in college for 5 years
