Lawnboyz chain?

And we certainly do rip the other programs. But with us it’s Ok?

It is classless.

It's almost like people change/grow/evolve/progress.

The nerve!

Why is wearing a chain classless?

Maybe we should wear these uniforms so we can stay classy ...

We don't want the 18th century Englishmen looking down on us.

Don't like it at all. Reminds me of da U. To me shows very little class. Suppose to be a team game and this goes aginst everything that concept says. It's a look at me type thing. If the other 10 people on your team weren't doing their jobs, you wouldn't have the opportunity to make the play.

It’s a stupid, low class, verging on punk like piece of crap that should be deep sixed immediately. It represents the “look-at-me” culture that is 180 degrees away from the no name on your back, plain white and blue image, that is Penn State.

If you don’t understand my point, let me put it this way.. I hate the POS.

Hurry up Dave the good ship lollipop is leaving.

Did you use Netscape Navigator and your AOL online account to post this?

This is not a rhetorical question, because I do not know. I don’t like it, but I also concede that I’m at an age where I don’t understand, but are the top programs (or elite programs) doing this?

Yep, just like there was a time when I would cringe at the thought of carpet-bombing points on an opponent when a game was firmly in hand.... these days/post-2011, I don’t give a eff ... roll up the sco’!

They put a black hat on Penn State... let’s wear it...

It’s not as if we had our 3rd string QB throw for a touch down on 4th and 12 in the 4th quarter when we’re up by 35 points in Syracuse or anything. ;)

If you’re talking elite Georgia has a golden spike shoulder pad prop with “Savage” on it.

And ‘Bama had the Ball Out Belt, given to the defender who caused the last takeaway, since 2015.

Florida State had the turnover backpack

But the best by far IMO is the Oregon State turnover chainsaw

So I’d say a small bling necklace is pretty tame by comparison to some of the props out there.

That chain saw is pretty good.

I bash Miami and others for these things. I can't pretend I don't dislike it. I accept they can do what they want but I still think it's stupid. Thankfully my opinion doesn't matter and since the kids are happy, just like at Miami, then so be it.

So, football teams never give recognition to players with goofy stuff? Oh, wait, a better idea to send all the stuff upper lip crowd here into a frenzy, would be for Franklin to distribute helmet stickers so our helmets could be like our “brethren” Skunkbears & Suckeyes then.

Maybe instead of the weekly Jackass Trophy we can pass out these stickers:

Personally, the thought of the outrage from the old heads was what made it great.

Joe set the model for winning on and off the field, but that doesn’t mean this current group can’t do that and still have fun.

Shush the away crowd after a score
Wear your sideline chains
Dance on the sidelines
Gasp....drastically change the uniforms for a game a year...gasp

As long as we’re still successful in the classroom and community, we don’t have to be the stuffy and boring Penn State.

If you don’t like it, stop watching.

I propose this pic gets given to the best weekly “jackass” post of the week. This week’s winner, the OP!

Easy skippy. I never said it was the end of the world. I just don’t like it - but obviously I have no say. Penn State’s brand is unique...but now we are going to act like all the rest? We’d better be ready to outdo the “look at me schools” and I doubt we are up to the challenge. Plus, it will be a prime opportunity for a good team (think OSU) to mock us and stick the chain where the sun don’t shine when the “lawnboyz” aren’t up to the job.

It's just a little chain, after all. Pretty understated compared to those others seen above, imho. Penn State style understated.

And, for goodness sakes, when you have 4 fine RBs jockeying for PT, you darn well better have a plan to take a little of the edge of the competition.

Oh so we “never” get mocked by other teams? You should have seen some of the signs we saw on the way to the stadium Friday night. So if players want to have some fun, let them. The Lawnboyz done ripped up the turf at Capital One Stadium Friday night.
The chain is tiny compared to, let’s say:

Surprisingly Bob hasnt yet stated his usual one-liner:

Please take this opportunity to remember that Penn State has a culture problem..

I’m not really a fan of these things but i give credit to Franklin in that he threaded the needle in allowing the players to have something they want and view as fun but also keeping it from being large and obnoxious that would’ve pi$$ed off the older fanbase who see it as unbecoming of PSU.

If it helps create camaraderie between the RBs, and helps keep all that talent on the roster... Franklin's a genius!

It's a lot more subtle than the crap at Miami, which helps.

Now that Penn State is doing this, Pitt will soon copy it. I was trying to think of what would really fit them well, and came up with a few ideas:
  • Penn State jersey - Any time a player who has good grades makes a spectacular play, they get to wear a PSU jersey so they can know what it feels like. (This would be a huge recruiting tool!)
  • Golden Free Beverage - Anytime a Pitt defender gets away with a hold, PI, or targeting... which is essentially any play it's not flagged. The trophy is like the Stanley Cup, it is engraved with the names of every Pitt fan, all 17 of them. Entitles the wearer to a free nap in an empty seat.
  • National championship trophy - a replica of the real thing, awarded to anyone who scores points, counted as real by Pitt fans.
  • Turnover Tampon - self explanatory

I fully understand your POV about the chains. However, after 8 years of seeing, hearing, and reading what others think of Joe and of us (Penn Staters), I’m not really concerned anymore with what they think.

Only 8 years?! You must be a rookie. ;)

This isn’t worth getting worked up about. Time to bring PSU up to the new century and let’s have some fun.

As a freshman at PSU in 1986, I had plenty of fun cheering the team on to an MNC. Lawnboyz chain is not my thing but I'm not going to get too excited about it. But to think that position group jewelry is the genesis of fun surrounding Penn State football is very much misplaced.

Dontcha think that getting to wear that chain might provide a little extra incentive to get into the end zone? That’s what I think made Miami’s turnover chain so great was that once it became a thing, that defense got better and the turnovers grew. If the 4 RBs are pushing each other harder in practice and games to get better and succeed because of that chain, that’s a win-win in my book.

However, if you fumble, you’re grounded for a month from the chain.

I started going to PSU games in the mid 70's as a kid and became a season ticket holder in 1993 and have enjoyed the time spent at the games. I have alway loved the mantra of Success with Honor and that PSU carried that as part of who they are. As for the chain and the look at me mentality that it has. I'm not a fan of but times are a changing and we need to keep up if we want to be a team that can compete week in and week out. We will be seeing a lot more changes coming. Hell in the 80's all we did is bitch and complain about the Wine and Cheese Crowd that sat on there hands and never stood and cheered. We all thought that they were a waste of a ticket. I'm not sure about you guys but I not ready to give up my tickets yet so let the LawnBoyz run.

Really? GMAFB! I hope that is the last we see of that abomination!
I'm sure that most here who do not like it are older, like me. And I'm typically opposed to such things, but for some reason this display of celebration does not bother me. I suppose it's because it takes place on the sidelines. I really have an issue with over the top celebrations on the playing field, but it's fine on the sidelines with your teammates.
