Quick Analysis:
125 Steen: Neither wrestler did much in this match. Steen defended a couple shots well, but literally never went to his offense. I am never disappointed in a loss ( ok maybe sometimes ), but I do get highly disappointed when a wrestler is down by 2 with a minute left, and does not attempt one attack. There is no difference to the team if you lose by 2 or 7, so go after a takedown!
133: Shindledecker: I give Karl a ton of credit. Was definitely undersized, but I think he battled the entire match. The stalling call on bottom was bogus. When the top wrestler has both legs in and is pushing on the back of the bottom guy's head, what is he supposed to do? He was fighting for leg position the entire time, and was trying to crawl forward which is awfully difficult with double boots in and a hand/forearm on the back of your head. I know that call did not determine the outcome of the match, but its then principle. You can tell Karl works with RBY with his footwork and I think he will be serviceable in due time.
141 BB: A really nice match put together by BB. His shot defense transitioning into the front head and arm offense was impressive. The only points HInes scored other than escapes was a really nice double that I will give props too. I honestly think BB racks up a few more points without the blood time allowing Hines to get a few breathers.
149 SVN: Most impressive performance of the day IMO. Definitely has the killer instinct. Seen a few posters mentioning he can get sloppy sometimes, which I won't totally disagree with, but I also think he is improving upon that every match. A match against a top ten guy will be really exciting.
157 BearClaw: Kind of surprised, kind of not. BearClaw has always had two he doesn't do particularly well. 1, getting off bottom, and 2 finishing shots which are the two things you definitely need to be above average at against a guy like Humphries. Humphries is very good on top, and I think even better at shot defense. However, to lose that match 6-3 with a riding time point; BearClaw shouldn't hang his head. He was in on a few shots, rode Humphries an entire period, and was able to get away. I see improvement and that is the name of the game until March.
165 Facundo: A little unusual one of our guys goes into the second period scoreless. I don't necessarily think it was a lack of effort however. Facundo was in on I think 2 shots that were defended and pushed the action in the first. He makes up for his scoreless first by wrestling an entire 7 minutes by getting a takedown late which also secured the riding time point. Another guy I am looking to see against someone in the top 10.
174 CStar: Didn't think CStar was going to put up as many points as he did the first part of the match. But CStar's pace, relentlessness, and skill set is a step above everyone else in the weight. And I think he goes another half a step above everyone when he gets a little irritated. So far, he's been able to keep it under control, but I do remember watching him in highschool take it a touch too far a few times. Not mentioning that in a negative way what so ever, but I know it was there at one point in his career.
184 Brooks: I can't help but think that there is a possibility Brooks is/was under the weather since the all star match. His movements look fluid as always, but after not wrestling on Friday, and IMO not quite looking like himself today, I just think maybe he has/had a bug. I don't mean to take anything away from Samuelson, but he's no Keckheisen.
197 Dean: I was hard on Dean last year for the way he relied on his top game to win matches, never really putting up a lot of points unless they came via tilt or bow and arrow. All he did was quietly make his way into the finals and win on Saturday night. For that reason, I'm not super worried. The things I'm slightly concerned about are hopefully easy fixes. If you're going to rely on your top game, you better be able to return your opponent efficiently, and consistently. Secondly, not allowing guys to finish almost all of their shots without much resistance simply can not happen. And last, getting to their legs more than once is a necessity. Again, these are not major issues, in fact, I think I remember saying something along these lines early in the season last year, especially after the Caffey match and by the end, he obviously had things figured out. As I already said, I am not super worried.
HWT Kerk: Um, yea.
Great overall showing, WE ARE!
