Match Notes for Lehigh dual

It looks like Bo gets the night off again. I really would like to see him face a tough 184 lber soon

Not a whole lot of beasts on his projected schedule. The ones that stand out are:

Tim Dudley in the Nebraska dual, on 1/8
Sammy Brooks in the Iowa dual, on 1/20
Myles Martin in the Ohio State dual, on 2/3

At the Reno TOC, brackets have not yet been posted. The only ranked wrestlers at 184 that are likely to be at the tournament are Nolan Boyd (Ok. St.) and Corey Griego (Oreg. St.).

Steven Schneider (Binghamton) is ranked, so Bo may get a battle next Sunday. He'll also face Nick Gravina (Rutgers) on 1/13.

Does anyone know if Kutler beat out Ian Brown at 57, or is Brown hurt? I seem to recall Brown doing pretty well at the Scuffle last year. I read that the Lehigh folks have very high hopes for Kutler.

Also, anyone heard anything about expected return of Minotti. He's an Easton grad, and my parents are both from Easton, so I was hoping to watch him this weekend. Thanks in advance.

I think Longo beat out Brown for the spot at 165.

I'm curious Minotti myself.

EDIT: This answers the Brown question ...

141 – Ryan Pomrinca (White) dec. Randy Cruz (Brown) 2-1
149 – Camden Fischer (Brown) dec. Brandon Diaz (White) 7-3
149 – Laike Gardner (White) injury default Cortlandt Schuyler (Brown) 4:48
157 – Jordan Kutler (Brown) tech fall Kent Lane (White) 16-0, 2:22
165 – Drew Longo (White) dec. Ian Brown (Brown) 9-7
165 – Gordon Wolf (Brown) dec. Chase Gallik (White) 18-17

285 – Doug Vollaro (Brown) dec. Jordan Wood (White) 3-1

Kyle Gentile placed at 170 or 182 last year. Went to school in the Lancaster area.

Kevan Gentile went to Jim Thorpe and now is at Bloomsburg.

Kyle Gentile placed 3rd last year at 182. Lost to Woodley in OT after losing a lead in the 3rd very late. Very good wrestler. He's from Pennridge, they are in Bucks County, Suburban One League, District 1.

Gravina can at times deserve to be mentioned above with Brooks and Dudley. He can be really good at times.

Boyd is pretty long IIRC, so might be a good matchup for Bo at Reno.

...Lehigh is usually a better dual meet team than an NCAA place winner...
...they generally have very good wrestlers at every weight, but rarely have NCAA finalists...
...for example they defeated Ohio State in the National Duals a couple of years ago when Ohio State went on to win the NCAA Championship...
...during the 7yr. period 2010-2016 Lehigh had 18 AAs but only 6 finalists ... for the same period PSU had 37 AAs and 20 finalists ...
...Pat Santoro does a very good job of coaching there and John Hughes is a great recruiter...especially of in-state and Blair athletes ...

Had there been any word on who's going to wrestle at 174 for the good guys? I think 165 could be an entertaining match, Joseph should certainly win, but Wolf can be a bit...uh, unconventional at times. He's fun to watch. The Cruz Bros will provide great competition for their PSU counterparts as well.

...Lehigh is probably favored at 125, 141 and 174 and if Minotti suits up they would feel good at 165...
...we should be heavily favored at 149, 157 and 184...
...133 and 197 are probably slight PSU favorites while 165 w/o Minotti would favor PSU, but Wolf is probably Lehigh's most aggressive wrestler...
...285 is really a toss up...

I agree with all of this...though being at home in the BJC will factor in.

This early in the season -- I'd favor Joseph over Minotti. IIRC, Minotti tends to be a slow starter and will stall his butt off in the 3rd period.

I'd put 125 and 174 in the toss-up category and move 133, 197, and HWT to solid PSU favorites.

125 - Tossup
133 - PSU
141 - LHU
149 - PSU
157 - PSU
165 - PSU
174 - Tossup
184 - PSU
197 - PSU
HWT - PSU

I'll be surprised if LHU wins more than 3 matches, and probably disappointed if they win more than 2. Call it optimism, high expectations, or whatever, but I really want to see PSU win 8-9 matches here.

...I will be surprised, too, since we are meeting Lehigh - not LHU (Lock Haven University) ... jes funin'..

Ha -- just goes to show how scatterbrained I've been lately. I can't believe I did that . . .

8 or 9? Heck with that. Here's hoping Jimmy wrestles to dominate Cruz and we chase engineers all over the raised mat and pitch a shutout.

Surprise at 2, shock at 3. This is Nick's week to shine. He does it now and establishes a national reputation. Cruz is too short, it won't be close.

I'm not a fan of roller coasters . . . In all honesty, I'm putting my head in the sand on 141 until March, whereupon I'll take a look at the scenery then and hope it is good. [No offense intended to anyone -- I just doubt that anything at that weight matters during the regular season this year, and I know it will be overanalyzed all season long.]

... and we chase engineers all over the raised mat and pitch a shutout.

For those of us that knew them as the Engineers for many years, it's tough to get used to their change of mascot. However, it would be more accurate to state "... we chase mountain hawks all over the raised mat ..."

...Lehigh was an all-boys school until 1971 when girls were first admitted - in response to increasing pressure from their alums who wanted family members to attend and a declining enrollment...as years went by, the incoming female student body changed the engineering ratio of the student population from about 75% to less than 30%... the school started to use "the Brown and White" to describe their sports teams and in the 1990's adopted the term "Mountain Hawks" ... much to the displeasure of the old guard, many of whom cannot bring themselves to use the term Mountain Hawks to this day..

...the local high school - Bethlehem Catholic - has always called their athletic teams the "Golden Hawks" and they were not overjoyed when Lehigh decided on a name so close to their mascot's moniker,,,
