Men's Olympic Freestyle Thread

Dubov blew a 4-0 lead, gave up 4 with :22 left, Dennis' Olympics over.

Higuchi is the real deal. All he needs now is a World Class education with a massive alumni base ;-)

This might be the best typo in the history of the internet.
I chuckled when I saw it too. There was another good typo on the Iowa board today. PBS makes a statement that Chicago has the most beautiful women in the world, and another poster replies by asking whether his wide posted that comment. haha

That is very surprising to lose in the quarters... quality of wrestling says you never get a break and have to bring it every match.

Discussed at length just below

Burroughs looking worse here than in the Guduev match. No doubt there will be injury speculation, but if he's injured it's not obvious to me.

Seemed gassed and certainly wasn't wrestling at the level he is capable of. Even in the match he won today, he didn't look good after the 1st period.

That wasn't JB out there in any of his three match today. Something is up I imagine. Since it seemed to center around strength and conditioning, I'm gonna say he got a stomach bug.

This means Burroughs gets no bye to the finals in the 2017 WTTs. Opens the door a crack for Dake a little if he can manage to stay healthy for longer than a month, or DT if he decides to reverse course after becoming enormous. Seriously doubt DT can go back down by this point though.

We as a country should just do away with folk and wrestle FS from day 1! No reason why we shouldn't dominant internationally with all the resources we have!

I disagree. Wrestling folkstyle didn't seem to hurt the 1972 team very much.

Could impact some guy called Wreck Hall

Freestyle rules are so Mickey ****ing Mouse. Decide a Gold Medal on "who scored last". And the cheezy shot clock point no less. Watched a week and a half of swimming. They can't spare an extra couple minutes for sudden victory to decide a gold medal. Cheezy.

Holy overreaction Batman!

I mean, if we want to have a reasoned discussion on the merits, fine.

But Burroughs has been virtually unbeatable in freestyle until today. Certainly folk didn't stop him from winning gold 4 years ago. So let's not pretend 2 losses today had anything to do with his years of folk.

I can see Dake cutting if he finds Burroughs vulnerable. Seems unable to handle Cox, and McIntosh may pose many of the same issues for him.

This probably helps Dieringer most.

There is a lot of this going around today. Never mind that Burroughs hasn't wrestled a folkstyle match since 2011 or Dennis since 2010. For whatever reason, they just were not good enough today.

The Iranian (Yaz ... really long name) defeated the Russian in the final -- the one that had bested Burroughs this morning.

A pretty crazy final. The Russian had a cut on his forehead, and I lost track of how many times the match was stopped for blood.

The Russian was up 6-4 with just under a minute left. The Iranian shot, somewhat poorly, and was hanging on to a single but not in great position. The Russian coaches threw in a challenge, but the ref did not notice it. They continued wrestling, and eventually the Iranian got a TD. The match was stopped with around 10 sec left -- I'm not sure if it was because the Iranian hadn't turned the Russian, or if it was because the ref saw the challenge. There was some confusion about the challenge, and the end result was it was either withdrawn (not sure you can do that) or rejected before review (not sure the ref can do that), or something else. No TDs after the restart, and the Iranian won the 6-6 tie due to having scored the last points.

The Russian coach went to the table to complain. The table seem to indicate that he'd had his chance, but now it was over. Then they gave him a yellow card and told him to return to his corner. He was slow to do that, and kept complaining, so eventually he was shown a red card.

I remember when my boss at Penn dot (when I did my internship) told we would do our plans in metric....... u are $@#÷× nuts

I hear what your saying but there positives to our style that FS can never duplicate. We just need to tweak a few things.

The Ian Miller Screwjob just went international.

It's beyond me why it's apparently not allowed for a trainer to wrap or cover a bleeding wound at the Olympics. I know dabbing at a cut with a piece of gauze has it's own allure, but it just leads to excessive stoppages. Strange that a sport which has had so much gamesmanship in the past (stuff that really bordered on cheating if you're keeping to the spirit of competition) hasn't addressed something that can easily be exploited.

Russian Olympic Officials Concerned After Learning Team’s Clean Urine Reservoir Almost Empty
700.jpg

MOSCOW—Stressing that they are on the precipice of a major crisis, Russian Olympic Committee officials held a press conference Friday to confirm that the team’s clean urine reservoir is almost fully depleted. “The demand for fresh, clean urine over the past two weeks has greatly exceeded our supply, and unfortunately, if we aren’t able to get more soon, our athletes may run out well before the final Olympic events,” said committee president Alexander Zhukov, adding that the 400,000-gallon reservoir’s supply of clean urine is at its lowest point in decades. “We are currently enacting numerous urine management techniques in order to conserve what little we still have left, but if we are unable to replenish our supply soon, we will experience our nation’s worst clean urine shortage since the 1992 Summer Games.” At press time, in response to the emergency, the Chinese Olympic Committee confirmed that it will immediately donate 200,000 bottles of clean urine to the Russian delegation.
