Danton Cole returns to Munn Arena.
Cole is green through and through. Went to high school in Lansing and played for the Sparts in their glory days. Played in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup with the Devils. Former assistant at Bowling Green, former head man at Alabama-Huntsville with a trip to the NCAA's then moved on to the USA National Development Team.
This guy is good and he is going to be a pain in the ass.
Hockey is a funny sport. It is really, really hard to follow recruiting. More and more guys want to play in college since the caliber of the game is so good. But there are only 59 D-1 teams, so competition for spots is very tight. EVERY team out there, even teams that lose badly, have some top-notch talent which is what makes the game so competitive. You play a bad team, their best guy goes off for a 4-point night, and you have a headscratching loss.
So much talent and so few spots also means you can go from the outhouse to the penthouse really quick. Look at OSU for proof - losing team last year, NCAA bid this year. Five years from birth to NCAA for us.
It is only going to get tougher and tougher. We're riding high right now, which is great, and we're not going to slow down - but there's lots of dogs out there after those bones.
