Not a fan but curious after the Harden trade. I had never seen him play, watched two games, he is an elite talent. My question, he makes about 40 M, played three games, none even consecutive nights and needs a maintenance day. How do you justify that to fans who paid to see him play? Not sure about other sports but this only seems to happen in basketball.

It’s hard work going up and down the court 50 times a game. I think the NBA needs to adopt a DH-like mentality and just let shooters shoot and defenders defend.

Interesting thought. I don't see how that could work in hoops
That's what they did in the olden days for women's basketball. Certain girls played defense certain played offense and only a few could do both. The old high school in the town I grew up in kept the gym and Library and renovated them into a community center but kept the same floor markings from 50+ years ago

Would that take fast breaks out of the game?

Not a fan of taking days off, but I think it goes something like this....the regular season matters, but not that much. Half the league makes the playoffs. It's more important to keep your stars, especially the ones that play a lot of minutes, fresh for the playoffs when every possession matters. Also, Harden has had some injuries - hamstring if I remember correctly, so I think they are making sure he doesn't overdue it.

From what I was told, yes.
Yeah, that won't happen. Offenses are to quick now a days. Fans like the highlight dunks. Make every possession consist of half court offense and ratings would absolutely drop

I think they were more worried about him getting lost in all the Miami strip clubs and not making it back to Philly for the game against the Bulls Monday!!

In all seriousness, he’s had some hamstring issues in the past 2 years so no need to push him on a back to back especially when it a road game. I was surprised they didn’t sit Joel as well. He hasn’t had a day off in a while. It’s taken me some time to get used to but this isn’t the NBA of the 90’s where you grind all year long without a “maintenance day”. Blame it all on the Spurs and Popovich. I think it does make for a better product come playoff time if the players are healthy. Just get me to the playoffs with a healthy roster and I’ll be happy.

So as I was told originally the girls game was six on six. Three girls played offense three played defense. You did not cross over from your half of the Court into the other the ball got passed across. Eventually one of those three Defenders could bring the ball across the line and one other person would come over to play defense as well making the game four on four.

His salary is irrelevant. He makes what the team AGREED to pay him. The fans buy season tickets today knowing the teams give guys maintenance days. They aren’t babes in the woods.

Baseball does it too
In 93 the Phillies were fun to watch. Went to 3 games ( we are several hours away) and Fergosi would sit Dalton on Sundays. Disappointed not to see Darren play. I don’t see what the sixers did with Harden to be any different

The NBA is a game of entertainment somewhat associated with basketball. I coached boys and then girls basketball. The boys watched the NBA and attempted to emulate that so called game. Disastrous. NO defense, little passing, screens forget it. Girls did not watch the NBA, they were easier to coach, listened in practice, were good passers, played defense, boxed out and overall enjoyable to coach. Girls obviously are not as strong or fast, passes less firm and girls can't jump as high. I recall watching 6 on 6 girls basketball games in high school. They would play before our varsity game and we enjoyed it so we did not go to the locker rom until the end of the 3rd quarter of the girls game..

I'd much rather watch UConn's women's team than pretty much any men's team for the very reasons you just explained.

Years back, when LBJ was still with the Cavs, I was invited to sit in a private box for a game. All of us were making comments about how we hustle more in pick up games than LeBron (and many other pros) do. I was mad about it!

No offense, but have you actually watched any NBA games lately?

Sounds a bit like mens lacrosse.

This is correct, as I recall three on offense, 3 on defense. I don't remember if one of the players was allowed to cross center line, with one dropping back, ala LAX
