NCAA Session 5 Thread

133 5th Place Match
Jordan Conaway - Eric Montoya (Nebraska)

Per 1
Stalemate at 2:13. JC shoots, blocked. 1:30 left. End

Per 2
Montoya takes down. He's out in 8 sec, 0-1. Montoya in on a low single, JC grabs an ankle aand they scramble, and JC with the TD, 2-1. Quick esc, 2-2. 1 min left. JC in on a head outside single, they scramble, and JC gets the TD, 4-2. Nearly a tilt but nothing. Montoya up and then taken back down. OOB at 0:08 sec. End. JC has 41 sec of RT

Per 3
JC takes down. Not much movement off the whistle. Montoya throws in a boot and has a cross body ride. RT now eliminated for JC, and starting to build for Montoya. 1 min left. Neither guy doing much. Stall warning on JC. A tilt but only 1 swipe. Now 4 swipes, and 4 NF for Montoya, 4-6. End. With RT, it's a 7-4 loss for JC. He takes 6th place.
Jordan stopped wrestling in the 3rd period. Good tournament though....

tough tough way to go out. But I will remember JC for his arrival from liberty and the "its cael sanderson on the phone" his always present motor and his smile in interviews...great kid and will be an even better ambassador as an alumni

I agree. Don't forget JC. He wasn't the best 133 pounder, but he was tough all year and is going to be an AA wrestling to his seed.

125 Next year, I know Suriano is a great high school wrestler, but does anyone see him as a true freshman next year doing what Nico did.

133 - Cortez replaces JC and he beat JC in the NLO. If he can AA next year as JC did, I'll take it.

197 - afraid PSU sees a drop here. Not sure who plugs in there. Love to see Rasheed there, but probably to big of a jump in one year and Cutch is already a small 184 pounder so I don't see him going up.

But like everyone has said. The future is bright!!!!

Congrats PSU coaches and wrestlers. Couldn't be more proud.

Great career Jordan Conaway!!!! Heart of a LION!!!

Tough won for JC. Lost a tough 3-2 decision to Richards then looks like he's got Montoya up 4-2 heading to the 3rd with choice and he gets tilted. Still a great year!!

Jordan stopped wrestling in the 3rd period. Good tournament though....

What an idiotic statement. Conaway's MO from bottom is to not move a lot, protect his arms and legs, and then slowly work to his base. He did that, but Montoya was able to get legs in. JC, like most guys, has problems with legs. He fought his butt off to avoid getting tilted. Montoya had his arm across JC's throat which seemed to bother JC, but it did not appear to be restricting breathing.

Just because someone doesn't get out from bottom does not automatically mean that they stopped wrestling.

I'd pay to watch him say this in person to Jordan or his parents.

Long ago lost count of how many of Spyker's comments go into that category.

133 Consolation Semis
Jordan Conaway vs. Zane Richards (Illnois)

Per 1
JC reaches, blocked. Richards with underhooks and gets behind. He gets a TD as they go OOB at 2:30, 0-2. JC out quickly, 1-2. Thru 1 min. 1:30 left, lot of hand and head fighting. JC shoots, blocked. 1 min left. Now JC with underhooks. 30 sec left. Richards in on a low single but he runs out of time. End

Per 2
Richards takes down. Richards up and out in 3 sec, 1-3. JC reaches, nothing. Stalemate at 1:16. JC reaches, Richards with a counter and in on a leg, they scramble, JC has an ankle, RIchards trying to come up, and the buzzer.

Per 3
JC takes down. Richards throws in the boot (should have anticipated that), and has a cross body ride. Richards up on on leg and does a roll for an esc at 1:27, 2-3. RT not a factor. Richards nearly a TD, nothing. 1 min left. JC needs a TD. JC with a high crotch attempt, blocked. 30 sec left. Stall warning on Richards as they go OOB at 15 sec. Richards has him tied up, and that's how it ends, 2-3.

Richards is tough, and really does a good job of blocking and locking up his opponent.

The Stall Call was made well before either wrestler went beyond the OB line and was made while Richards was backing up while both wrestlers were still several steps inside the circle (Richards had also been backing up for the better part of 30 seconds when the call was finally made). Richards should have been called for "fleeing the mat" as that stunt had nothing to do with what the 1st Stall Call was made for and the only stall call made had several seconds before Richards decided to flee the mat of his own volition. Richards fleeing the mat should have generated a second stall call.

Jordan picked a rough time to wrestle his worst match in quite some time. Honestly, Jordan looked like he had less energy than he usually does - actually gassed a little bit relative to Montoya in 3rd. I wonder if he was feeling a bit under the weather in that match - that is the least amount of energy I've seen from Jordan I think ever.

I will miss JC, He was one of my favorite wrestlers to watch because he always gave 110% The team will miss how inspirationally he wrestled especially against those who were "supposed" to beat him....he helps the team feed off of the "lets get after it" attitude!!!

I think he was the Heart of the team...He will be missed in that wrestling room.

I wish he would have chosen neutral, but Monday morning quarterbacking is low risk profession for a reason. With Jordan's character and effort there's no way anyone should be critical of him.

I think it's fair game to question Conaway's choice in the 3rd period. We'll never know for sure, but I like Conaway's chances if he takes neutral. I just think he is better on his feet than Montoya is. By taking down, he played into Montoya's strength.

However, to say that he stopped wrestling in the 3rd period (as stated by a different "well known" poster) is beyond stupid.

It was just Jordan's turn to be thrown under Spyker's bus. Happens to every athlete somewhere along the way. Some people are braindead and they know it. Some don't realize it.

Raise your hand if, going into the tournament, you'd have been happy if Jordan would be in a battle for 5/6th place.

I, for one, am thrilled with how Jordan, Geno, and Jimmy did! And although I feel bad for Cutch's late season injuries, I am absolutely ecstatic with our team's performance. It's been an incredible season. I'll be cheering like crazy tonight. Whether we have 5 champions or 0, I will be mighty proud of our squad, and super stoked for our future!

Meh. PSU won the team title, and Jordan's career is now over. Why bother questioning his choice in the 3rd period? What's the point?

His parents were sitting right in front of me at the CSU Bakersfield dual. Really good people. It's no mystery where he got his positive outlook. Does anyone know what his plans are after graduating?

IA Meyers loses at the end on a reverse to Ohio's Walters.

Meyers gets 8th

During the first round at heavy. Walz and Marsden. Walz shooting and chasing, shooting and taking Madsen down. Very aggressive and athletic wrestling from the Virginia Tech heavy.
The entire match Marsden was in reverse.

With about half a minute to go Marsden reached in to wave at Walz's leg and the Oklahoma State bench is up with fists in the air wanting a stall.

I could not hear what they were screaming, but it had to be something like, "come on! my kid hasn't done a bloody thing for 6 and a half minutes but call that other kid for stalling would you!"

Brown working The Mullet @84 in the 7/8 match. I still say The Mullet's #2 seed is one of the most ridiculous seeds I have ever seen based on a reasonable review of his entire season (he was ranked 8 by intermat at end of season after b1g's and he's wrestling in the 7/8 match - go figure, boy the "selection committee" really revealed themselves with that one.....).

Pete Renda (won the Consi Final @84) had one hell of year after he went up in weight from 74 to 84. I think most of his losses this year were at 74. Really impressed by Renda - he's a Pennsylvania guy at a weight of need that we could have used out of high school.

Walz will go after it... he doesn't roll over when wrestling Gwiz.... and has certainly given him high quality matches.

Both mullets lost. Nate Brown beat Brooks 9-3. Nice to see him go out a winner.

Jammies should be here any moment trash-talking about that awesome Pfarr victory for 3rd in another "traditional b1g shiz" snoozefest (Pfarr beats Burak 2-1.....who'da ever guessed it would be such a snoozer, go figure)....

Marsden pinned.
Jordan was our only wrestler in this round, but with Cowboys and Hawkeyes losing left and right it was a rather enjoyable round.

Iowa State's Downey Pinned VT's #6 Haught for 197 5th place.

wow, Coon with a TD on a counter with about 8 sec left, and gets the pin with 3 sec left. I would have picked Walz in the matchup.

What was all that gibberish from Jim Gibbons about "California would have beaten PSU for the Championship if they would have just kept their talent at home"??? What does this even mean? Does this moron even realize that Pennsylvania not only produces the most NCAA Tournament wrestlers, but also the most AAs by a wide margin and, not only that, but Pennsylvania has the most D1 Wrestling programs of any State by a factor of like 3??? Anybody else here this absurd comment by Gibbons that the only reason PSU won the National Championship was because "California could't keep their talent in-state"? Is this guy on freaking drugs, because he clearly does not understand the numbers relative to Pennsylvania and the # of Pennsylvania wrestlers on PSU's roster relative to CA wrestlers. That might take "absurd comment of the championship telecast" so far which is no easy feat given the constant absurdity that ESPN delivers.

You're right that the decision doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. However, this is an internet message board about PSU wrestling, right? And I for one would have liked to see him end his career with a W. Hence the discussion/question.

It's Jim Gibbons, so relax; it need not make sense. And just a suggestion - don't get so uptight about the ESPN commentary or visual images.

I happen to know Jordan. He has my respect big time. Just said he relaxed in 3rd period.... He will tell you the same. I already talked to him....
