Sits out the game tonight vs WMU because he doesn’t want to risk injury. He has over 1000 yds and is <100 yds from setting record. This is getting ridiculous. There are currently over 100 kids in the portal. I didn’t realize Pitt has 3 kids in the portal, as does Michigan (including the 4 star TE they recruited last year).

The problem with this type of thing or any other is when you make a change this drastic there are all kinds of unintended consequences.

Transferring has to make things difficult academically for these kids. But the NCAA doesn't care. Wait until the kids start getting paid for their likeness. Academics will be an afterthought.

So much for the day when college sports were played by college students.

One easy way to stop shit like this is send the kid a bill for his tuition and expenses for the semester.

As far as accepting transfers, it’s probably always worth asking why is the kid transferring ? If a kid expects some sort of special treatment, that is a big red flag. Why waste time and effort developing a kid who will immediately go elsewhere if everything isn’t to his liking ?

This is freaking college football, I know it makes a hell of a lot of money, but at it's core, the academics should have priority. It's simple, if you transfer, you don't play the next year, but you get the scholarship to the new school so you get all of the benefits of being a football player, but you just can't play in games....

You mean like Fields at OSU?

I’m waiting for a coach to walk into an empty locker room on game day. “Well, shit.”

Now the rest of college football can sort of see what PSU experienced in 2012. I still say that you could count the college football programs on one hand that could of been dealt the hand PSU was and still have a winning record through the entire ordeal. A huge credit to the hearts of the kids that stayed. They will forever live in Penn State lore.

I wonder about the academic side of this new process, too. Are the players in the portal expected to continue to go to class and maintain their grades? I'm not sure about how this impacts their access to the football and related facilities, even though they remain on scholarship. (I could look it up, but I'm not going to before typing this out!).

And doing this midweek, while preparing for the next game and already having been in game-planning meetings and practices.... I'm sure they can see how this impacts their teammates and coaches.

I agree that sitting out for at least some period of time would make players think it through a little more, as waivers seem to be the rule rather than the exception. If not a year, then half the games, or something. I want to see things be fair for players, of course, but some responsibility has to go along with it. With coaches and contracts, it's a financial consideration. With players, there should be more balance between asking out and landing. As it stands, it seems to be overly favorable to the player, given what seems to be the waiver rate. Just find some balance, make the decision just a bit tougher due to all considerations, and be ready to tweak things as we learn from the process as we see it play out more and more.

I like the idea of the portal being open during certain times. Allowing the disruption once the season gets underway doesn't seem to be the way to work it. I'd try closing the portal starting with the first week of the season and opening it at the end of the regular season.

And head coaches can leave at the drop of the hat without repercussions.

This mirrors the University system in general.

Professors can switch schools every year... some can even teach at multiple schools in a single year.

Students... well they are rather locked in.

My thoughts too. Also all the "big city" schools will rise to the top of the polls because they offer the top 4 and 5 *'s much better opportunities to make the big bucks. PSU will fall to the middle of the pack as a good not elite team because of it's rural location.

The entire college recruiting process as it relates to basketball and football has been scrutinized and challenged since the mid 80’s. I remember two guys on NBC arguing whether the athlete was an amateur or professional athlete? Naturally the argument morphed into a racial injustice argument where colleges unfairly enriched themselves at the expense of poor minority kids. Today we have a dam transfer portal and rest assured in less than 10 years you will be dealing with agents and guaranteed contracts. No one in their right mind can look at a National Championship game and believe those are amateur athletes, they’re not.

We still have a free market system and the professors and coaches have the ability to change jobs within that system limited only by terms of the contracts they are bound by. The players on the other hand receive free tuition, free room and board, free medical, etc. and still may change "jobs" at will with the new portal and transfer rules in place with more freedom to come when "likeness" payments go into effect. I think the system is strongly "over tilted" in the players favor.

Well... the players have to play. They don't get anything for free.

What? Well of course they have to play and when their playing days are over the vast majority of them don't have to pay unlike the average student who will be saddled with a substantial debt to repay. 95 % of college players will never play for pay after graduation, instead they will enter the job market debt free and be compensated based upon what type of degree they earned and how well they "paid" attention in class. I don't share your sympathy for players having to "play" in order to receive a college degree with no financial obligation.

I think this portal thing could self correct. When kids put themselves on the portal and don’t get picked up, or go in believing a top 10 team wants them but only get offers from Rutgers, it will set a tone.

By that logic, the SEC is screwed. Even schools located in cities like Baton Rouge and Knoxville, are backwaters in terms of media and advertising

What in the world?

Who has sympathy for players? I am simply comparing the coaches and players.

On the other hand I have very little sympathy for those who get low interest loans to go to school.

That is called a benefit.

Not sure what would be so difficult about putting a window on the portal. Once you appear in a game, you can't enter until after the regular season has ended.

Ok, not belittling your point but the coaches, as per most jobs, either perform or get canned or move on to greener pastures which is their prerogative. The players on the other hand get "paid" i.e. obtain a free college education with all the perks whether they perform or not. It's an apples vs. oranges comparison.

Those who get low interest loans what other option have they if they want a college education? I have more sympathy for them than the players.

It’s called free agency.... it’s the world today. Not much loyalty these days.

there is an assumption by these guys that they are going to be playing in 2020. i think the ncaa stated that the 1 yr sit out rule will be applied.

Those who get low interest loans what other option have they if they want a college education? I have more sympathy for them than the players.

That is a different question.

And again I never said I have sympathy for players. I said the players dont simply get scholarships and their pick of schools with nothing in return.

LdN

Simple solution .. just change that rule too.

Guess you haven't been paying much attention to the direction of the rule changes and why they're going that way. The rule change you suggest ain't never happenin'.
