NLWC in Rome

Colon and Gilman
Colon on the clock, gives up the point
Gilman on a leg but Colon stalemates it
Colon fast shot off the whistle, easily converts, up 2-1
[Sees nerfstate is doing pbp, closes up shop]

Colon down a point didn't have the late strength to get to Gilman's legs.

Fix lost on a last second takedown. The bronze matches are ahead of the Gold match

Keep up the pbp Tikk--my kids are being distracting, and I'd hate to slip on Zain's match.

Not counting event officials, coaches and photographers......are there 50 fans in the entire stadium? Close matches but no energy in the gym :(

I didn't even realize they were running a 61kg bracket. Have to wait a little longer for Zain. I'm not here past 1 pm myself, going to "Beer Bourbon & Barbecue" in Brooklyn. Four hours of drinking and pigs.

Oh wait, I think Zain coming up on 1.

Zain Shuptar (UKR) on Mat A
  • Zain gets a low single and finally converts for 2. Warned about a potential dangerous move after he looked to bow and arrow the leg.
  • Another 2 off a low single for Zain. Easy to get to Shuptar's long legs, harder to convert.
  • Shuptar with his own low single now, and he turns Zain to tie. Then in scramble gets four off feet to back. 8-4 Shuptar
  • Zain with a low single and he gets the two. 8-6 Shuptar headed to break.
  • Second
  • Zain with snapdowns, now in on a low single. Shuptar exposes, get two. Zain reversal. 10-7 Shuptar.
  • Zain in whizzer position, both guys looking to make something happen, Shuptar tries to throw and Zain flattens him for the fall. Score was 10-9 Shuptar at the time of the fall. Zain takes bronze.

Or a large intestine.
Who’s been to the Mutter Museum in Philly?

The Megacolon there impressed Mike Evans (whose own fame was colon-enhanced ;) )

Edit: Philly’s Megacolon is real, not a model! My kids and I, like Mike Evans, couldn’t believe it.

Nice win by Zain with a late fall, after trailing 8-4 and 10-7. Zain was winning that bout by folkstyle scoring, but gave away too many what I would call "cheap" points, especially that 4-point exposure as he was trying to get the reversal. Zain looks awfully tough, but seems to still need some more freestyle mat awareness. Looked great on his leg shots and getting the fall! Nice bronze, Zain!

Oliver Bajrang
  • JO keeping distance, gets a warning.
  • JO with a perfect ankle pick gets Bajrang off balance, easy two. 2-0
  • JO in on leg, settles for pushout. 3-0.
  • Bajrang hit with a stall warning but not on clock
  • Break
  • JO with an ankle but Bajrang slips it and gets pushout. 3-1 JO
  • Bajrang snatch single, settles for a pushout. 3-2 JO
  • JO in deep but Bajrang flips him for 2 exposure. 4-3 Bajrang.
  • Ref takes forever to call a stalemate b/c JO nearly pinned by Bajrang's legs. Now JO bridging out. :28 left. JO looking for a brick? No.
  • JO needing two looks upper body, Bajrang circles, gets behind. No scoring. It ends 4-3 Bajrang. Great match though.

That was weird how Bajrang and JO were in the same position for like 1 and a half minutes. Was JO really in danger of being pinned there? Seemed weird the ref let it keep going.

Oliver lost a tough one 4-3 to Bajrang (who also beat Zain and McKenna). Oliver was dominating 3-0 and gave up a tough 2 points on a chest wrap, after being in deep. The chest wrap led to Bajrang having Oliver's shoulder trapped with Bajrang's leg and he held Oliver on his back for almost a minute and a half, keeping Oliver from having much of a chance of scoring. The only US guy to beat Bajrang (that I know if) is Yianni at the Beat the Streets.

He looked like he definitely could have been pinned.

Jo looked outstanding first period, but let it slip away from him. He looks great. Bajarang is that slick and I've only seen Yianni get after him better.

agreed. Very tough to watch. Of course we didn't have a good angle of JO's blades/back

For how vaunted Fix was/is and for how long he has been in the Okie State room, his lack of reliable offense against top tier guys is disappointing. I mean, Gilman is no Spencer on offense and he put 12 up on the Chinese guy.

Apologize if this is tangential to the thread, but I thought Nolf’s transition to freestyle would be much easier than Zain’s. Not so much a knock on Nolf (perhaps injuries have held him back), as it is a compliment to Zain. I just thought Nolf’s take down and release style in college would trump Zain’s hammer on top style in the international game. Zain is just impressive.

I don’t think you can stop it if the guy is on his back, even if you think a pin is unlikely. That said I would have loved to see them get back to the feet there to see what JO’s tank looks like. He was showing some signs of wearing, but hard to tell.
