Northwestern Match Thread

Davison showed a great week of wrestling and amazing position wrestling today. Still like Shak when it matters. Great dual by our guys today!!

Meredith looked good. He might of been able to win it if the ref didn’t keep letting Deaugustino waddle in a circle around the mat after every stoppage. It was clear Deaugustino was sucking wind and trying to catch his breath. At some point they have to stop that crap and give a stall warning.

We may be getting a little hyped about Brandon. He went into the weekend ranked ninth in the B1G by Flo. He lost to numbers 12 and 4. He will need a big effort to qualify for the NCAA Tournament and probably, if he makes it, will score little or nothing there

His mindset and effort are well worth the praise he is getting. He apparently is making gains this year, but tournament point contributions , if any, will likely be in future years.

Whatever his outcomes for the rest of the season, he will be fun to watch and root for.

Not seeing it elsewhere in this thread: Byers said in the post-game that the team expects everyone to wrestle vs. Rutgers next weekend except maybe Berge.

Good, on both counts. Good that the rest of the team is healthy. And Rutgers Fight Club is probably not the most prudent first match back for someone who has missed time with a concussion.

I have a feeling Cael has a little something for them. He’s definitely not a fan of the tampering and probably not a fan of Goodale’s tough guy bluster.

No need. Rutgers will only win 1 weight, and then they get to go home to Rutgers.

If Cael really had it out for Goodale, he'd knock off the bus driver and replace him with Matter. 3+ hrs of being ripped on the bus PA system, and they can't do anything about it because he has the keys and the wheel.

What are your thoughts on Gardner going 57 if Berge cant go

Good dual victory against the #12 Wildcats.

Beginning at 133 ended up the worst possible starting weight, as RBY and Lee staked the Lions to a 10-0 with back-to-back Tech Falls.

A workmanlike victory by Verkleeren highlighted his counter-wrestling strength, against a competitor I thought he should beat even more handily than he did.

That followed the Deakin/Pipher bout that Pipher won. Not on paper, but Deakin did nothing to change the momentum, and Pipher, even with the loss in the scorebook, kept the fans engaged.

Cenzo and Hall did Cenzo and Hall stuff, with a Fall and Tech Fall, to keep the crowd cheering, as the score was now 24-3.

Creighton Edsell, undersized at 184, showed the Lion heart with a hard-fought Decision win. According to WrestleStat, using the All Wrestlers feature, Creighton is #77 at 174, while Jessen is #47 at 184. Think about that for a second. Shak showed rust again, and hopefully nothing more, as he lost to a hot wrestler in a bout I'm sure he wishes he had over.

At heavy, Seth looked pretty good against an undersized opponent that has yet to win a D1 bout. Plenty of time for the Major, settled for a 7-point Decision, that he can learn from. Each point (in this case, a bonus point) is precious.

Lastly, Brandon Meredith pushed the #7 ranked kid in the country before losing, in a bout that had all the Penn State wrestlers out of their chairs, standing and cheering on the Lion freshman. A bit of inconsistency early this season, losing by Major to #11, before beating #10, then this weekend losing to a 7-5 unranked kid, before giving #7 all he can handle. I will say this about young Meridith -- it's great experience, and he will be a more consistent wrestler by year's end.

I'll support every wrestler that hits the mats, and Luke would give the same fight as he has at 149, but a full weight class upward, this late, and the odds are against a much better performance that we're getting from Pipher. Best I can offer you is to look at WrestleStat and make an assessment on the results.

I am just guessing and I would love to be wrong, but Berge taking the mat at any time this year would shock me.
