Nebraska dual thread - Jan. 17

Lol. He never was in Hodge contention with a 4x champ and an Olympic champ in the field, and several other returning champs behind them.

But my point was "Shayne hasn't beaten anyone with a pulse" is demonstrably false. And that's not what your reply focused on.
Ok fair…..that was definitely a first hearing he was a hodge contender

Hmm, not sure about that. SVN is definitely more finesse than bulldozer, but it took Kasak 2 "feels" and losses to Lovett last year before he was able to reverse the result at NCAAs. He lost to Lovett in the dual 7-3 and at the B10 tourney 4-0, then figured it out and put a 10-1 MD on him in March.

I believe last night was SVN's first ever match with Lovett. I wasn't surprised by the result. Lovett is a funky, very good wrestler who was the #1 seed at NCAAs last year.

I suspect Lovett will come to regret that SVN got this hands-on assessment opportunity before post-season matchups that really matter.
Was stated earlier as well, but Kasak's MD win over Lovett at 2024 NCAAs requires perspective. After losing to Henson in the semifinal match, Lovett seemed deflated in the consolation round; got smoked by Kasak and then lost to Parco. This after being undefeated all season (prior to the semifinal loss).

So Lovett appeared sort of broken after the NCAA semifinal loss. Was definitely not the same guy that majored SVN last night in the PSU/Nebby dual.

That’s called the Spencer Lee effect.

Oh wait, nevermind…Ridge actually wrestled.

Excuses. You’re essentially saying he’s weak mentally. As opposed to Kasak who had the mental toughness to make an amazing back side run.

Anyone that was predicting a shutout needs to remove the blue and white glasses….nebby was very capable of winning any match 125-157…..we have become spoiled
PSU is very capable of winning either (or both) match they lost. A shutout prediction wasn't the accurate prediction, nor was it a preposterous prediction.

Exactly. The only matchup in which PSU wasn’t a favorite on paper was 125 and a lot of people correctly called for an LL win. Nebby pulled off two upsets, so kudos to them. That said, predicting a shutout had exactly zilch to do with Blue White glasses.

What has happened to Ridge Lovett to say that on paper he’s an underdog to SVN? Maybe not a favorite but at worst a toss up?

As THE leading member of the Fire Cael Caucus, I’m going to add this data point to our end of season performance review. Our starters have already lost 5 dual matches which is, as you know, unacceptable
I thought IronTurd, Vodka and Turk were the three headed leader of the Fire Cael Caucus?

Nebraska might be apparel national champs.

Not saying that Hawks don't eat boogers but I thought Michigan and Harbaugh had some sort of trademark on public booger eating promotions.

Sometimes you gotta give the other guy some credit. Lovett is extremely dangerous and difficult to wrestle, especially the first time.

I was impressed with SVN’s work off bottom in the second. The score didn’t reflect how close the match was. That’s a toss up every time imo. Great top 3 at this weight with Henson, SVN, and Lovett.
“Other guy credit” is mighty rare in these parts, pardner.

I disagreed with the penalty point assessed against MM for supposedly pulling Wilson's wrist away from his back. I watched it in slow motion and it was Wilson who tried to belly out, which caused his wrist to move away from his back. Regarding the ref stopping the match for the TF rather than let MM continue to work for the pin, Wilson was able to break NF criteria while MM still loosely had the bar arm. That seemed to be the right call.

Pure filth:

@amattaro You said the Nebby fans were gracious--was there any heat from any of them during the Mesenbrink match? Just curious.
That's an Ono snap to leg attack. I've noticed Psycho hitting it this year even before Ono arrived. Feels like the perfect move for him and now that he can get hands-on drilling with Ono... he'll be deadly with it by March.

True, just as nebby could win every match 125-157 as well in a rematch…..most people were calling for a shutout…..know one was taking van Dee over davis

SVN’s match left me scratching my head. He didn’t do what he normally does, even in the first period. Didn’t really push the pace and try to wear Lovett out.

Wonder if he’s coming off a bout of illness like Kerk.
Pretty sure that Kerk and Van Ness are roommates. Could be true about the illness factor. Doesn’t matter anyway, past history shows in season dual meet results tend to get reversed in March. Hope this holds true again

I hope your correct. I actually forgot Kasak lost to Lovett twice last year. Lovett is a really good wrestler with strength and some funk. I think he will be a tough go for anyone. I actually thought he sometimes has trouble with his gas tank in other years. He looked good last night throughout the match. If I had to bet on rematch I think I would bet Lovett.
I actually thought Nebraska wrestled tough last night . They should have a pretty good tournament team.

Agree that the ref properly ended the match with a TF.

Not sure, but I think MM's post-match discussion with the ref was about the penalty point awarded to Wilson, rather than about how the bout ended.

I suppose one could make that conclusion about Lovett, but it is unrelated to the point I was trying to make; i.e., Lovett was a much different wrestler in the consolation bout against Kasak than in the dual match against SVN. The Lovett we saw last night against SVN doesn't lose to Kasak by MD.

This is not making excuses for Lovett or dissing Kasak. Just my perspective about how the Lovett-Kasak bout shouldn't be compared to the Lovett-SVN bout.

My only disagreement about stopping the match is ... How many time has a ref HELD back points until the top wrestler has to virtually wave both hands to prove that the pinning combination has been broken? If MM still had the bar (even loosely), would the ref have actually awarded the points?

Bunch of fun bouts. I do think L.L will need to ride out someone come crunch time, even if only 30 seconds

I think it's not necessarily a given that things just magically change in March, in reference to Davis and Van Ness. Braeden needs to focus more on wrestling his match and avoid mistakes. Shayne, for whatever reason, gassed in the second against Lovett. The takedown was a direct result of this, leading to the near fall count. I think there are real time adjustments that both can make before March, that can help.

Did it in Kerks
They also need to look at the rule of control. Barr takes down in the 2nd get out and grabs an ancle and has the opponents' leg in the air looking of a trip/takedown and he kept saying no change. How? The Nebraska wrestler was not even touching him? He pushed him out of the circle and let go, and then they gave him the escape.

That one’s always going to be tough because the “bottom” wrestler is assumed to be going for 2 and not 1 there. My POV is a reversal is a bigger change (being controlled to being in control) than a TD3 (neutral to in control), so shouldn’t be fewer points. The gray area is whether there’s an extended period where there’s no control either way but continuous contact (like bottom guy got to a leg) and whether you really want to make that 1+3 if/when he finishes.

I understand that. But riding time should stop and if there is a stoppage then they need to award the escape. If they ended up going out of bounds, they would have put Barr down again? Then call it neutral and stop the riding time. If then he gets the reversal, he gets 2.

Riding time should stop anyway. As in, cease to exist.

Great dual , gotta like a 8-2 win vs a solid big ten opponent. Refs had some questionable calls tonight , let that Josh barr scramble go on way to long , barr could have gotten hurt, Bartlett had two near fall at the end match according to the ref holding up 2 fingers and than just a reversal, I think if they gave hardy the escape a brick would have been thrown. Also how do you beat a team by 60 match points and have more stalling calls against you.

The refs were quick with the stalemates, and the one stall call was weird. I thought Nebby could have been hit with a few more stalls but all in all I thought the reffing was pretty fair.

Riding time is part of wrestling and should be 1 pt for 1 min., 2 pts for 2 minutes, and 3 pts for 3 minutes. It’s a sign of superiority which is what wrestling is all about. 3 pts takedowns… meh!
Stalling is part of wrestling and let's give it even more incentive!
