Official 2019 Champions League thread.

I was going to choose a team based on who won on Saturday. I have changed my mind and will decide on which fans show the most class in this thread and the Premier League thread.

From this point forward......until the start of the next season. Have at it.

Based on what happened Saturday I can see fans swearing off soccer completely. What a terrible game. The fan atmosphere was abysmal as I feared. There is nothing about Azerbaijan which is European. It’s in Asia. Why not hold it in New York? Fans would have packed the stadium. Kazakhstan has some of the largest oil reserves in the world. I can’t wait until UEFA decides to hold the final there.

Um, yes.Supertodd knows the game, but his judgement becomes clouded when it involves Liverpool.

I'm sure you are messing around a bit, but in all seriousness, you should choose your team mostly based on the style of play you like to watch. You shouldn't shy away from ManCity just because they are on top of the EPL right now. They are great to watch and extremely well managed. I could watch David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne all day long.

Style can change over time, so that can't be my main reason. It is a reason why I eliminated some from contention though. In all seriousness, I was down to Tottenham and Liverpool a week ago, so I had jokingly said I would let the winner decide. Something has come up recently that has added a potential third team to the mix though. We'll see what comes of it.

I’m sorry I thought this was posted in the other thread which was about the Europa League final in Baku. My bad.

Come on Todd!

I come at you with the same humor and intensity that you come after me.

Stop crying wolf sir. You have expressed your hatred for Liverpool and how it eats at you. {Enjoy your summer sir - The World Champs say hi!}

You holding yourself in high standards is, well, downright laughable; clown-like!

I put it out there here and you:

YOU stop the insults, name-calling, flaming, not-even-so-much-as good-natured banter, etc. and I will follow suit all next season.

DEAL??

:)

On behalf of Tottenham, I'll note that I came into this thread and congratulated Liverpool and their fans on a great season and well-deserved Cup. That is all.

A group of my friends all loved the EPL, but didn't have a true team we all supported. We decided we needed to settle on a team to make it more interesting. We went through a long process of eliminating teams to narrow it down and decided to go with Tottenham. We just got lucky that Tottenham became much better a few years later and decided to build a new stadium. One thing that we used to eliminate many teams was didn't want (a) a team that is bottom half and a threat to be relegated, or (b) one of the already-existing powers. I get what you're saying, and I can enjoy and appreciate watching ManCity, but I just would never have felt right as a fan of a team if I was essentially saying "I need a college hoops team, I think I'll go with Duke." I've asked on more than one occasion why I would do this to myself when I already suffer through an underspending team in the Pirates, and perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment, but the successes feel better when it took more to get there and wasn't just hitching to the bandwagon of the superteams.

I can't disagree with that. Personally, I wouldn't pick a team that was on top either. Part of choosing Liverpool was that they had such a long drought (and now that makes the CL win feel even better). If you pick MC because they are the best - lame. If you pick them because you really like their style of play and players- I can't fault you.
On the flip side, I wasn't going to pick a team that had virtually no shot at a title, so there were really only 6 choices from the start.

Things might get more interesting in that regard. Based on my research I saw that Man City was trash for years. Then someone with unlimited money bought the team and the bought a bunch of players and now championships.

The model appears to be buy a struggling franchise at a lower price, then throw money at transfers until you win.

I’m keeping an eye on Newcastle next. If their purchase goes through, they could be in the mix within a couple of seasons.

We were essentially the same on wanting a team that can compete, but isn't already on top. Our final two were Everton and Tottenham, so glad we went the way we did.

Speaking of having a chance to win championships...In October of 2015 I was at the ESPN club at the Boardwalk in Disney World watching the Pirates/Cubs play-in game. I'm talking to a couple British guys about EPL and they tell me they're lifelong Leicester fans. I tell them I just don't understand how you can be a die-hard fan of a team that has no chance of ever winning a championship. I guess because miracles do happen sometimes.

Never hurts to have an excuse to drink too. Newcastle and Aston Villa seem like teams whose fortunes would change dramatically with ownership change.

As if losing to Chelsea wasn't bad enough, I feel for my fellow Gunners that had to travel back home from Lower Bumfvck. What a joke.

I love listening to the Football Show on Sirius and they have had a beat writer for Arsenal on a few times over the last couple of weeks. Arsenal might be in bad shape. With Stan Kroenke taking over sole ownership of the club they are really not equipped to spend like the other top clubs. They had about a $50 million transfer budget, which is nothing at this level, before the Europa League final. If they won their transfer budget would have ballooned to around $110 million. That loss was huge. They are really going to find it hard to catch the top 4 with those financial restraints.

You had your chance.

Not even man enough to make good on a good offer.

Couldn't be more true. he has only one football team in mind, and they are located in Los Angeles and building a 2 billion dollar stadium. it could be the start of some rough years for Arsenal with this type of leadership in place. Very saddening for the fans and former stockholders in the club

I have had you on ignore off and on for years, so I didn’t notice your multiple posts about this over multiple threads. Please feel free to put me on ignore.

That's no excuse for not being civil sir going forward.

You're just using this as an excuse.

Very despicable one might say.

Come on sir!

Let's move forward together and peacefully.

Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Leicester should consider Sturridge after Liverpool release’
Goal.com 15 hours ago

  • allowed to leave Anfield at the end of his contract.

He has endured a few tough years on Merseyside through a combination of unfortunate injuries and fierce competition for places.

Sturridge is, however, a proven goalscorer at the highest level and is still only 29 years of age.

He is considered to still have plenty of Premier League football left in him, with a former top-flight frontman talking up his claims to joining another ambitious side as a free agent.

Ex-Palace striker Morrison told talkSPORT: “I believe Daniel Sturridge is still good enough to play in the Premier League. He’s got great technical ability.

“Before all of his injuries, for me personally, I think he was the best English striker in the county. I thought he was better than Harry Kane.

“He’s the most naturally-gifted finisher I’ve seen. He’s the most natural finisher in the Liverpool team, but you just can’t get him in that team because of the work-rate of Mane, Firmino and Salah.

“He’s had a lot of injuries, but I think he’d be a great addition for most Premier League teams.

“Maybe not in the top three or four, maybe not for Liverpool or Manchester City, but he could go to a team like Arsenal.

“I would love my old club Crystal Palace to get him and Leicester could be a good shout – he and Brendan Rodgers work well together.

“Rangers could work too, maybe Steven Gerrard could get the best out of him, but I think he will want to stay in the Premier League.

“I don’t think Daniel Sturridge is money orientated, he was earning a lot of money at Liverpool and that could have set him up for the rest of his career.

“He’ll want to go to a club where he’s playing week-in, week-out, and I still think he can do a great job in the Premier League.

“The big question with him will always be, how fit is he going to be? But mentally he’s in a good place at the moment a fit and hungry Daniel Sturridge is an asset for any team.

“As a striker, all you want to do is score goals, that’s all you live to do, and if you can get 30 games out of Sturridge for the whole season, then you’ve got one hell of a player.

“He’ll be fit, flying, he’ll have a point to prove and nobody has to pay a fee for him.”

Sturridge, who recorded 67 goals in 160 appearances for Liverpool, has walked away from Anfield as a Champions League champion.

“Maybe not in the top three or four, maybe not for Liverpool or Manchester City, but he could go to a team like Arsenal."

Ouch, that dig at Arsenal.

I'd be surprised if Rodgers wasn't interested in Sturridge, before the injuries he really was tremendous under Rodgers. That 2013/14 campaign was something else.
