Officials

probably the best officiating job I’ve seen in awhile in one of our big games. I didn’t have the ability to rewatch but overall I think they made the right calls.
Was not happy with several spots and holding up our O after the one spot, but otherwise as good as can be expected for playing a conference favorite. Arnette also should have been called for targeting on the hit that knocked him out of the game.

Yes, a few questionable spots. But no glaringly bad calls, and the closest call (pass interference) actually went in our favor. No objections to getting this crew in future games.

I have a question about one call in the game and I'm sure they got it right. On Taylor's int return tOSU 3 players received unsportsmanlike penalties and for PSU only Shareef Miller. Strange rule that those are offsetting.

Yeah that was weird. but on the replay, I was not sure why 2 of the OSU players got the call. The offsetting made sense after I saw it

It’s been a while since the referines have screwed us. Possibly it’s because the B1G doesn’t want to hurt a now very good team, but I wonder if Franklin pushed our admins to quietly address this issue with the B1G a few years ago.

I thought the replay was cut short where the other two may have jumped on 48.

If the hold up is the play I’m thinking of before 4th down you can thank our pa announcer. He said Penn state first down when we’re well short and it confused everyone on the field.

Exactly. The official had to contradict the announcer. Someone might want to remind him to not get carried away with emotion. The officials never signaled first down, not at least that I could see. Maybe I'm wrong.

It’s been said before but I’ll say it again the school needs to get rid of that clown with the microphone. He’s incredibly annoying.

There were a couple blatant non-calls including an illegal block in the back on first OSU TD.

Both teams got away with some blatant non-holding calls. It's just the way holding is/isn't called. It's been that way for a couple of decades now.

But didn't the official blow the whistle/stop the clock? I thought that was why everyone thought there was a first down. OSU made a quick change during the ref's announcement.

Fair point. In the stands, several of us said right away, "that's not a first down." We had a good view of the spot and the marker though.

Yeah, I thought that was the case. I believe Fowler/Herbstreit thought the same thing and said as much. In my disappointment I deleted the game from my DVR, but I probably have time to re-cover and re-watch to be sure....:/

One other officiating question - did anyone think that the PI call on Castro-Fields, when Taylor almost got his second INT, was questionable?

The only calls I had issue with from the stands were the spot on the osu 4th down. I think it seemed pretty clear the ball was short of the line. The pass interference in the 4th where we should have intercepted it was bad too. That ball was completely uncatchable.

I’m usually as critical as anyone of Big 10(14) officiating (or lack thereof) but I think they turned in a very good performance (for them).

The PA first down announcement explains the delay in allowing our 4th and one play and we were gifted a terrible pass interference call in the game.

Someone questioned the personal foul on the sideline late hit / targeting (saying he was pushed into the play). Baloney, just a terrible unnecessary late hit that never should have happened. Really hurt losing part of the defensive line rotation.

There were several spots that I questioned, but otherwise we got as fair a shake as we could ask for. Unfortunately the officials got it right on tOSU first down review that was upheld, his final late twist got the ball to the line (by maybe 2”).

I have one question about the late hit on tOSU sideline by #55. He was also called for targeting. Was that legit on replay?

Plus the call was on a route away from where the ball was thrown and the OSU receiver pushed off. If the roles were reversed, it would have been called PI as well, but offensive PI against the PSU receiver.

Hi helmet hit the osu players helmet. So can’t realy argue with the call.
And it did get Thorpe in on the DL (though maybe he was playing anyway, I just saw him on OSU’s last TD).

Just got a call from my neighbor, a former varsity baseball player for U of Miami, I thought to bust my balls about the game. But he called about the one sided officiating pro OSU in the game. As a complete non-partisan watching the game that totally surprised me. He pointed out several plays, many of which have been discussed here. Most of us thought the game was pretty evenly called except for a couple of plays, but that was not his perception. I told him, you should have seen some of the games a few years ago with the magic bounce pass, supposed interception, etc.

Just thought I would give people an outsider’s perception, not someone looking through blue and white or scarlet and gray tinted glasses. He felt PSU was the superior overall team, but lost on a combination of bad calls. Some from the referines and some from Penn State’s offensive and defensive coaches.

I thought that was a bad call because he was clearly pushed into the Tosu player. I was stunned when they came back from commercial and he was tossed.

A second unsportsmanlike penalty results in an ejection. That is why the 3 players from OSU were called out. Still offsetting penalty.

Thank you. I did not see the ref signal 1st down. It clearly wasn't one.
I had a poor look from the other end of the field, to the point we're you can't tell if he's 3 yards short or made it. But, I was elated to see the first down signal and the clock stopping. Someone screwed up, I just made it home and haven't seen the replay yet.
