Football Ohio State defeats Penn State, 20-13

Franklin: "99..9% of programs would love to do what we have done"

Umm no...and also we are top 5 all time wins, top 8 or 9 blue bloods overall so why TF should we not be better than most programs? You get 111K die hards dummy.

"I had some things I was going to come in and say but they are not appropriate now. I will discuss later"

WTF are you going to say James? The refs? BS..your play-calling sucks.

These penalties are why Penn State loses games to equal or better teams almost every time. The time to stop this nonsense is early on in the season, when these jackasses are jumping around like a rodeo clown after making a stop. It’s too late now.
Lack of discipline on game. Another trait of PSU under CJF. Some of these players need their backside kicked by the coaching staff. I despise showboating.

He's always making excuses. The refs let both teams play. We primarily lost because of Wallace dropping an EASY TD then the play calling on the final drive.

He has such a loser mentality. And, for a program like ours, it's amazing how it's acceptable

OSU was the road team. They threw a pick 6. They were 2 yards from a TD and Wheatley punched the ball free. If Howard was a good passer, Smith has a walk in TD.

Our RBs had 42 rushing yards on 18 rushes. Our WRs had 3 receptions.

Thinking it was meaningful that we had a 4th and goal down 7 in the 4th quarter is a poor take. We had it and was completely shut down. That's what was meaningful.

Whether they were the road team is inconsequential as to whether or not they outplayed us in a particular facet, or all facets.

They threw a pick 6, or we caused a pick 6? And how would that be excusatory either way? If there isn't a "lucky" bound on a fade pass, and if we have 1 better goal line call (out of 4 attempts), we score 2 more TDs ... but those aren't meaningful. But the things OSU missed out on are meaningful? And the positive plays for us aren't attributable to us? Or something.

The salient point being, if we were outplayed in every facet, and were still within a yard on a basic play call of tying/winning the game, that must say some very positive things about us. If we were boat raced 40-0, then I'm willing to accept your characterization. As is, it's just post-loss crankiness.

They know we are running and we can't get 2 yards. We know they are running and they march it all the way down the field.
So spot
I will never get it. 4th down at 1 and you put 2 receivers in EZ against 4 defenders and stud TE at 1 easily defended. WHY THE F DON'T YOU ROLL QB OUT TO LONG SIDE and get some space for receivers..or even give QB a change to run it in.
Spot on!!!
Two times in the 5 with zero points. It is play-calling. CJF had his grubby little fingers in red zone again. Sorry, I have to believe that AK is better than this old sad story. The opportunities were there.
Ive said the same thing! Ak was not calling hi diddle didle run up the middle 3 times then call that crappy pass play! Franklin of course!!!

That's $10M annually of BS excuses.

We can all blame James and there is certainly plenty of blame for him there. But let's not ignore the elephant that is NIL, OSU is playing with a Yankees/Dodgers salary in the CFB world and we may not be the Pirates, but we are significantly behind. CFB does not have a level playing field and likely never will again. So unless all of those who want to buy out James contract want to also sign up and donate a bunch of NIL, it's not likely that we will be on tOSU's level from a talent perspective. It would be nice to pull off a surprise more frequently than we seem to though.

This article has us 8th in the Big 10.

Hey Einstein. Please explain all the choke jobs before NIL then.

I watched this game with OSU and PSU fans (and other fanbases) and one of the PSU fans said the same thing you just mentioned - he went ballistic on a couple of the penalties

Well, that's disappointing... I had planned to watch the game recorded. Been cutting deer all day, LOL. I guess I won’t have to watch it now.

Well we will have to disagree.

Our defense stopped their running game for the most part
I wouldn't exactly say we stopped their running game. We did at times. But certainly not on that last drive, when we desperately needed to stop the run and get the ball back. They ran at will.

The discipline problem goes to recruiting. Franklin can't be the disciplinarian that he should be with today's kids because he would be unable to field a competitive team. So he talks about "cleaning things up" but most likely that's just a soft mention of something in the team room. No real penalties for behavior.

At some point leadership in the locker room needs to manifest itself and hold some guys accountable for crippling and unnecessary unsportsmanlike penalties that can have a big impact on a game like we saw today. Obviously Franklin shows no inclination to do anything about it, as it happens a lot. The dancing and preening and tough guy act gets tiresome especially when it costs you games. Nobody in the locker room cares, so it's obviously not going to change. I guess they feel our offense is skilled enough to overcome this stuff but I don't think so.

True but we should still be able to win a few of these games. Not the majority but maybe 33%.

Our star players (Allar, Singleton, Allen, Sutton, Carter, etc.) were part of the #6 ranked class in the nation. OSU can make the big play when they need it and PSU can't. A lot of that is certainly talent but IMO there's more to it than that.
And every one of those "star players" you listed looked average today.

The only one's that I hope come back next season are Allar and Allen. And Carter if he wants to play LB. Franklin needs to get a couple of star players from the 2024 true freshmen (where's Martin at....?), a couple 2025 true freshmen WR's that can light it up as true freshmen (not likely) and hit the portal for a few positions for real impact players at DE, WR, which likely won't happen either.

I love PSU football, but I guess I've had my fill of Franklin's failure to win ANY really marque games from 2016 until now.

That goal line series just reinforces how poor an in game coach Franklin is. That was a combination of AK and Franklin melting down.

Agree. He still does not set the edge well enough to contain mobile QBs. That was one of my keys to winning. Discipline in your responsibility. They allowed Howard to get outside too often.
Two 3rd down conversions at the end with Howard just running off the edge. Although at that point the defense was demoralized from the offense's ineptitude.

Sadly, the real mystery of that game is how our supposedly dominant D Line got overpowered by an injury riddled, makeshift, rebuilt tOSU O line. Baffling.
I think they've been pretty much a disappointment. I think the more baffling thing was how our offensive line could not crease Ohio State at all today. At no point did we control the line of scrimmage on any series. I believe the longest run for Nick was seven and Allen with four. all they are a bunch of soft guys that cannot push anybody around. At this point I don't know why we are surprised about ineptitude all over the field in games like this

I’ve not been as impressed with our O Line, especially with an injured Donkoh. Our D Line should have been able to dominate and the reverse happened.

Well James typically has a smaller and athletic defensive line because for some reason he thinks that wins in the Big ten and yet we always get crushed up front by the heavy weights on the schedule. I guess he hasn't learned that when he self-scouts, same thing with his slow and soft offensive line.. maybe the strength and conditioning program needs to be changed or Phil should be on his way out. I'm so tired of James saying it's on him to fix it and he will look internally and do self-scouting bull crap because nothing changes.

I think it's a mental thing at this point, to be honest… OSU just has our number. Sucks.

Edit: I did forget to add that OSU has the most talented overall roster in the country in terms of the blue-chip ratio, I believe.

My crew purposefully didn't go up for OSU game because we feared it would just be more of the same.

In Neyland Stadium right now to watch UK vs Vols. Great 2 days of college football culture and fun.

Watching the State game today brought the worst case scenario- exactly the ineptitude of blowing an opportunity to beat a hated rival in a winnable game.

Ruined my afternoon but not night. Maybe this loss shocks Franklin into changing his approach to "Big Games?"

We can hope but today it felt like yet another fools errand.

Go Vols!

They're asking the same question on the Buckeye boards. Many thought their injury riddled OL would get destroyed by the PSU DL and just the opposite happened

He can't discipline the players? Other teams seem to manage to get a grasp on the BS and field competitive teams. You think Saban would put up with this? You think Kirby Smart does? No way.

This is all by Franklin's choice. He's undisciplined and soft, which his team directly reflects.

The telltale play was the pick six. 8 minutes into the first quarter and Reed, who is SUPPOSED TO BE A LEADER ON THIS TEAM, jacks off his helmet and runs his mouth like a 15 year old. Saban would have yanked him off the field for the next 3 series.

Yep excellent point. For years now seemingly this team is full of me guys and a locker room that predominantly seems to lack any kind of leadership or accountability. If you're not player led, it will be hard to accomplish big things. The constant offsides by Abdul and this team which I believe has the second most offsides in the country to stupid gyrating and dancing after routine tackles. Abdul and the DEs never seal the edge and play sound defense, all they do is chase the quarterback. What a bunch of soft guys mentally who don't live up to the old school standard of hard-nosed football at Penn State.

LOL.. injury ridden OL.. so they move over an All American then bring another 4 star guy who is 2 nd string up to fill a spot.. I laugh at this “ injury riddled” line.. these teams like Georgia and OSU.. never really have to worry about injuries they are just so loaded and deep at every position..

I understand your logic - to a point - but the OL has been OSU's problem over the last 3 to 4 years. The OL - in CF - requires more development than any other position group.

I think there OL was only an issue against Michigan..and I curious.. looking at there OL starters and backups.. where they stand in recruiting ? Ie 4 stars.. no way a program like OSU.. has mediocre recruiting at any position.

If you read their boards, they let their previous OL coach go - Stud something - because of his mediocre (for OSU) recruiting and development. Their new OL coach is also being scrutinized. Every other position group at OSU is rock solid and - obviously - very talented.
