Ohio State thread

In another example of Tom Ryan and crew focusing on the minutiae, CP on FRL was mentioning that’s he been getting texts from the Ohio State staff about Flo ranking Alirez above Mendez.

Can you imagine for 1 second Cael and crew wasting their time on something like that?
That’s great hahah has there been no response from Tom regarding Blaze?

HILARIOUS!! No I can't imagine Cael giving a single F about Flo's rankings..

That being said....As a fan..I agree with TanTom. Mendez returning champ, beat Alirez in freestyle over summer and toed the line at All-Star event..he should be 1 IMO. Same for Levi..defending champ and O'Toole not defending champ but a two timer moving up weights, Levi beat him convincingly in freestyle over summer and toed the line at All-Stars. Mendez and Levi, should be #1 ranked but it is what it is..plenty of time for that to change

Yes Mendez should be the 1 seed flo is close to wrestle stat standards with this ranking.

O'Toole and Levi, no it is correct 2x going up one weight and a 1x going up two weights, your blue and whit goggles are fogging up!

Also, freestyle results should never ever effect folk style rankings! Nor vicey versy.

I think their reasoning was Alirez was undefeated in 2023, while Mendez had 2 losses last year.
Additonally, Alirez beat BeauB in his semifinal more soundly (9-2 adjusted for 3pt takedown) than Mendez did in his final (4-1). Also, Alirez met the #1 seed Real Woods in his final, and some could argue Alirez's path to the championship was in a tougher 141 bracket.

Ahh preseason rankings, non of it matters and they shouldn’t even put out rankings till at least halfway through the season.
No thanks. Imagine NCAA football, basketball without rankings? Rankings are fun to talk about, people tune in for “ranked games”

Casual fans use rankings to determine who they watch. For example, I don’t watch a ton of college football anymore. If I see a game coming up and it’s 2vs4 etc, I may tune in to watch it compared to a game of 2 unranked opponents where that’s not happening

Just look in these last few posts. Everyone is going to have their own opinions about the rankings, who should be ranked where, etc

IMO rankings should include true freshman as well. Other sports do it. If you have the 5 best basketball players coming out of HS and going to one team, that team would be ranked pretty high pre-season without even taking the floor. Pre-season rankings should be based off data AND perception and then start from there as season moves things will change.

For example..LL should start top 15 or even higher..there’s not 15 kids in the country better than him. So why start it unranked? I get why they do it but using other sports for example, they do take newcomers into pre -season rankings

@FatWoodchuck Still, I will take Alirez over Mendez whenever the two might meet in folkstyle, if you care to make a friendly wager where the winner's proceeds go to the NLWC or PSWC as a donation.

Most succinct and accurate Tan Tom assessment I've read in years.
He is not easy to respect. Someone respectful does not take unwarranted shots at wrestlers and programs because they are on the losing end. From criticizing the Mark Hall win over Jordan to saying that PSU and Iowa were doing "unethical" things regarding the transfer portal, etc.

He acts the fool so his wrestlers don’t have to, or somesuch rationalization. I think he’s just passionate and needs a better filter for that passion.

This. If, God forbid, Cael had taken the OSU job, Koll or McCoy did not want the PSU job and we had hired Ryan we would be much more appreciative of his whining.

that is an assumption... not sure about that as it would get tiresome... maybe 'tolerant' is a better word than appreciative

Ryan is such a crybaby, yet his wrestlers always win or lose with class. He's easy to poke fun at, and equally easy to respect.
Just too much Iowa wrestling still in him. Luckily, he doesn't transmit it to his wrestlers.

Odds of Ryan being offered the Penn State job ahead of Kerry McCoy, Rob Koll, and both of the Hughes brothers was essentially ZERO.

Don’t forget the loooong bus ride, illness and poor officiating that caused Logan’s loss to Zain.

I included McCoy and Koll "not wanting" the job in my post, but thanks for the help.

As far as the Hughes brothers. Before taking the OSU job Ryan was already a successful head coach at Hostra. The Hughes brothers had no college head coaching experience and having experienced the previous PSU hire that had no college head coaching experience I am fairly certain Ryan would have been ranked a more preferable hire than either of the twins.

If grey did not exist & the world were black & white, you'd be correct.

And we can throw The White Wizard Mark Manning in with Tom Ryan's poor verbal behavior & piss-poor & ill-advised accusations regarding other teams & coaches. But even that, I agree with Nerf above that such word slingin is a flaw many coaches exhibit, from some misguided sense that they're 'protecting' or 'fighting' for 'their guys.'

But also, the assertion that his guys win or lose with class is tough to disagree with across the board. The Jordan brothers are something like 2-12 or more against PSU and they almost always took the L's with grace. Kollin Moore, Ethan Smith, Kaleb Romero, Myles Martin (excepting papa Martin) the same. Joey McKenna & Luke Pletcher took their Ws with grace. Man, you could build a long list of Buckeye wrestlers who are indeed easy to respect. I'm fine with granting some or any of that class & respect back to Ryan's guidance & leadership.

Tam Tom just gave Beau some bulletin board material. Can’t wait till Beau proves him wrong and shoves it up his ass. Basically says Beau a tough kid but just not as “skilled.” Whether he believes that or not, kind of crappy thing to say.

From Flo article

Right now, Jesse just has more skill. Bartlett is a great competitor and wrestler, but Jesse has that as well, and Jesse’s skill is better in more positions. Jesse’s a fitness freak and he’s a gladiator. Our advantage right now comes down to the skill level, and we think Jesse has that over Beau. I'm taking nothing away from him. The kid is a beast. Our advantage right now is just skill level. Jesse can score from a lot of positions, and he’s just hard to wrestle. He’s got good defense, he can go to the left leg, the other leg, he can slow you down. He’s just so tough in all positions.”

It may be a bulletin board material, but I don't see anything change. Mendez and Alirez both have killer instincts.
