Ohio State thread

Tam Tom just gave Beau some bulletin board material. Can’t wait till Beau proves him wrong and shoves it up his ass. Basically says Beau a tough kid but just not as “skilled.” Whether he believes that or not, kind of crappy thing to say.

From Flo article

Right now, Jesse just has more skill. Bartlett is a great competitor and wrestler, but Jesse has that as well, and Jesse’s skill is better in more positions. Jesse’s a fitness freak and he’s a gladiator. Our advantage right now comes down to the skill level, and we think Jesse has that over Beau. I'm taking nothing away from him. The kid is a beast. Our advantage right now is just skill level. Jesse can score from a lot of positions, and he’s just hard to wrestle. He’s got good defense, he can go to the left leg, the other leg, he can slow you down. He’s just so tough in all positions.”
Karma is real and comments like this come around to bite the speaker in the ass. Bartlett will beat Mendez in the NCAAs.

And we can throw The White Wizard Mark Manning in with Tom Ryan's poor verbal behavior & piss-poor & ill-advised accusations regarding other teams & coaches.
I know you didn't mean it like this ...

Picking cherries here, but Cael could have said Nolf was on different planet of skill from Ryan's son. Just sayin🤷‍♂️

I wish that I had Jesse's skill.

Ryan just can't help himself. If he has to say something, he can just say "I believe Mendez is the best 141 in the country in a really tough weight class with Alirez and Bartlet. Jesse has gotten the better of Bartlet in the last 3 times in one move matches which he has gotten the takedown each time in the closing seconds of a period. I don't expect anything different from those two going forward, will be a tough matches".

He really can't help himself.

It's like, there are 9 instances of Penn State guys being better than their PSU counterparts for every 1 going the other way. But you never, ever hear that chatter from State College.
Nolf is just more skilled than Jordan, just is.
Hall is just more skilled than Jordan, just is.
Bo is just more skilled than Moore, just is.
Kerk, just more skilled than Feldman, just is.
Levi just more skilled than Paddy, just is.
Carter just more skilled than Rocco, just is.
On and on.

But all the chatter goes one way.

Meh. I don't see what he said as particularly incendiary. He is respectful to Beau and just talking up his own guy, who is, in fact, the defending NCAA champ. Plus, he's not wrong, either, based on the last year's worth of matchups. He's not saying Beau isn't skilled, just that he's not quite "as skilled" as Mendez, which I can't really argue. Mendez is the best there is right now (we'll see what Alirez and/or Beau can do to knock him off his perch as the season goes on...).

Welp...similar to when Brands labeled Spencer as the "best of all time" 2 months before he got stuck by Ramos, it just puts unnecessary pressure on a kid. Why would a coach do that?

No one's saying what he said is or isn't true.. we all have opinions. As an opposing coach, saying that is super disrespectful and as Petch says, just put's more pressure on his guy. Have you ever coached?

I certainly have for many years..I would never make those comments about an opposing player in public. Yeah, do I tell my inner circle what I think/feel..of course..but you don't go out of your way to make a comment of disrespect.

What's his excuse going to be when Beau beats his kid next time.."welp the less skilled kid won, had a little more grit that time, but skillwise he's just not there"

Tommy's problem is he thinks what you do in the weight room is more important than what you do in the wrestling room.

I tend to agree. While Tan Tom could have chosen better words, the Bartlett stuff doesn't compare to some of the other stupid sh!t he has said over the years. Not necessarily inflammatory statements, just dumb and douchy stuff.

Tan Tom seems like a good guy overall, but just has a penchant for occasionally sticking his foot in his mouth. As another poster stated, seems like Tan Tom just can't help himself at these moments.

We can thank Tom for saying dimwitted stuff from time to time since it gives stuff to talk and chuckle about.

I’m still chuckling about Tom’s ‘not how we would have done it’ comment just before we blew the roof off at Rec Hall in the greatest college wrestling dual ever.

I do agree that it unnecessarily puts extra pressure on his guy. I just don't see the disrespectful part of it. That's what I was addressing.

100% this. My guess is the Tan One is just super frustrated at his team not being in contention for a title in recent years and he’s grasping at straws to illuminate one of the few bright lights in his program. Problem is he’s simply too dull to realize how disrespectful this is to Beau. Not the brightest bulb in the lamp shop by any means.

I generally agree with these takes. I get the sense that TaTo just lacks a bit of social grace and self-awareness. If someone would've said to him right after making that comment, "isn't that disrespectful to Bartlett" or "doesn't that put unnecessary pressure on Mendez," I suspect he would've been confused by the question.

I also doubt TaTo's comment impact Beau in any meaningful way. Except for maybe making him chuckle.

As someone who predicted Mendez would win 3 NCAA titles midway through his freshman season in a post on this board, I agree with Tom. But this isn't really about Mendez and Bartlett. What it comes down to is that Tan Tom is a great competitor and coach, but for the past 15 years, except for the punt year, Cael has just had more coaching skill. Better recruiter. Better trainer. Better person.

Tom is falling prey to the little coach syndrome and needs something to boost his self-esteem since he knows he isn't besting Cael anytime soon. Enjoy your little pyrrhic victory and the fight for second place, Tom.

You would think Tom would be a little more respectful and appreciative of Cael and Penn State.
If it weren't for Cael and Penn State Tom and Ohio State would have a few more championships, but that fantastic 2018 team wouldn't be recognized as the "BEST" second place team ever.

There is only one Cael Sanderson!

...and he sets an impossible standard.

As a Buckeye fan, I often cringe when Ryan speaks. No doubt he has done great things for the Ohio State program, and he does prioritize bringing in classy athletes which I appreciate (I also believe Cael does this, too), but I could do without the whining and gimmicks. No doubt he is passionate about the sport and loves his guys, though. That’s not a bad thing—just sometimes wish he wouldn’t talk so much.

This could be said for many people...
Some even criticize others for their avatars, I just don't think they love tough avataring..

You’re all missing the angle that it’s not a given that Mendez wins another title, so he’s shining the light on him now while it makes a bit of sense.

Since he likes to compare… TaTo should be asked for his in depth analysis of his coaching vs Cael’s

Exactly. Ryan also called the Young Bucks “the best recruiting class he’s ever been a part of or seen.” Let’s see how that plays out.

It’s already played out. Those 3 main guys have no chance of even equaling Nolf and Nickal alone.

Bouzakis likely transferring soon. Mendez has won 1 title and may win 3 - we’ll see, but he won’t be a 4 time finalist. Feldman likely won’t win 1 title.

Feldman is TBD. He’s not winning this year, but next year after Gable, Kerk, Yonger, Schultz, and Hendrickson are gone, HWT is going to be wide open.

Ohio State Wrestling Jeopardy:

Answer: “The same got-damned thing!”

Question: “What’s going on in Columbus?”

Watching the replay, two matches in and we’ve already;

a) elected to go neutral down 1 in the TB rideouts, despite never being even close to a takedown in the first 9 minutes and our wrestler not having much trouble getting an escape in the 3rd.

b) took neutral in the 3rd period of a 1-point match instead of going down and trying to get a two point lead.

Have like 80% of our wrestlers over the last decade had a severe allergy to mat wrestling or something? How many 1-point losses can you remember for one of our guys
where the other team took down but we took neutral?

The only good mat wrestler in the last number of years I can think of was Steiber. I guess Jaggers as well but that is a horrible percentage. Something needs to change because it is a massive deficiency
