Ohio State thread

The only good mat wrestler in the last number of years I can think of was Steiber. I guess Jaggers as well but that is a horrible percentage. Something needs to change because it is a massive deficiency
Sasso? I thought Myles Martin was pretty good on bottom, save for one Rec Hall dual vs Bo Nickal. Mendez seems good on bottom too.

That you only named Ohio natives is a giveaway. Their biggest problem is their recruiting base. Ohio refs have for decades been notoriously quick at stopping mat action. Likewise Ohio HS wrestlers are often not nearly as good on the mat, especially bottom, because they don't have to be. And that makes for weaker training partners team-wide.

Ryan has not yet been able to figure out how to undo 10-12 years of Ohio youth/HS wrestling within a 5-year period, consistently.

Note that the 2 guys being squawked about, Birden and Shumate, are both Ohio natives.

That doesn't leave Ryan faultless -- for example, you couldn't pry Kenny Courts off bottom with a crowbar. And some Ohio natives have been good mat wrestlers elsewhere. But that's the first cause.

There’s a reason why some fan bases want college wrestling to switch from folk to free

Completely missed Sasso. He’s actually the best and of course he’s a PA kid

Sounds like Rocco Welsh may be on his way to Ok State after Ryan botched his handling of 174 this year. Welsh wants to wrestle but Ryan holding spot for Karchla (who can’t stay healthy)

That would be a killer blow for the Buckeyes
Bad for Bucks, better for Welsh.

This is something I may never understand about college athletes -- if he leaves for OKST, then he's shirting this year regardless.

And if he wants to go 174, that's hardly guaranteed in Stilly with Lockett incoming.

So why is he leaving -- to spite Ryan?

If true (and it would add up since Rocco accepted a match against Levi at 174 initially) then Tom Ryan botched this in the worst way.

Having redshirt flexibility is great but if a kid wants to go ultimately, they're the best guy and you hold them back out of seniority loyalty or because someone else has been waiting, it doesn't sit well with a lot of kids.

Maybe. This would be clearer-cut if Welsh were going 174 next year. But he wasn't -- his tanshirt was about growth to 184. And this reverses that plan.

Does Welsh no longer want that development plan?

Or did he never really want it but went along until he didn't?

Welsh clearly was preparing to go 174 this year and whatever happens next year, he wanted to decide then after NCAAs. If there was a plan for him to redshirt this year to bulk up, he clearly didn't think it was communicated well.

this whole thing reads like fanfiction to me. I can’t see a coach as successful as Tom Ryan forcing Welsh to RS as a returning national finalist. I do think it is reasonable that he wants Welsh to RS because his best chance at winning a national title will be next year when 184 opens wide. But to hold him out to the point he risks losing him and Welsh has to RS anyway just makes no sense for either side. If Welsh does hit the portal OKST, ISU and many others will be all over him at 74 or 84 but I will have to see it to believe it

Not sure what weight Lockett projects in college, but he wrestled at 74 kg (163 lb) at the U20 World Championship not long ago (Sep 2024)..

💯 curiosity, where why and how did this come up?
There have been some rumblings (nothing confirmed or concrete) about Welch being unhappy because Tan Tom wanted him to redshirt for the 2024-25 season. Then just this past weekend apparently Welsh visited OK State (where he was presumably offered a large bag), so now the rumors are really swirling.

Sounds like OKST is following the Iowa model of offer first, check portal later.

Ah, the good ol' days of "I can get you a meeting with Tom but you have to enter the portal first."

there we go lol. I always thought the theory that made most sense was Welsh planning on going 174, realized before Clarion Open it was a tough cut and that his best bet was 184. But since 184 has a murderers row of seniors he just decided to RS and bulk
He didn’t decide anything. He was leaving until they met today. He’s pissed that he prepared to go 174 and wasn’t even given a chance to wrestle off for spot and told he’s RS/going 184.

So much so, that he was in Stillwater last weekend when Ohio state wrestled Pitt.

Ohio state smartened up and must have offered something…

Kid’s a hammer!

Sounds like he's coming out of red shirt to wrestle 174 or 184 and he got paid. Good for him , leverage is a good thing.

Dude! This is hilarious! NSFW

I think he has realized that if he goes to Oky St. it brings a whole host of Western themed tatoos into the mix. The possibilities are almost endless and he still has some valuable canvas left.
He an underclassman and is beginning to rival Eierman’s awful tattoo collection. Give him 2 more years and he’ll look like an MS-13 recruit in an El Salvador prison
