OSU QB Baldwin declares for transfer portal as well as USC QB

Very bad news for OSU -- Great News for PSU

Ohio State's second string qb, Mathew Baldwin, just went to the transfer portal. The only typically recruited qb that OSU has remaining is Justin Fields who didn't look great in the spring game. College football is going to be a very different game, if it is difficult to hang on to reasonably talented second string qbs. https://theozone.net/2019/04/ohio-state-qb-matthew-baldwin-placed-name-transfer-portal/

In one year OSU has gone from having a huge amount of depth (Haskins, Burrow, Martell & Baldwin) to none.

No argument here other than your comment on Fields spring game.....2 passing TDs and 1 rushing. He had a very good game.

You're absolutely right about college football changing. I'm going to say the sky is falling but this seems a bit much.

It's even better news for Michigan. Maybe they'll finally be able to beat OSU for the first time since 2011.... (edit) and second time since 2003.

This is just crazy ... IMHO NCAA needs to cap this transfer portal with a date like May 1.... Teams and coaches need to know who is going to be on the team at some point

Why should the NCAA change a rule that has been in place for as long as anyone can remember?

Are you here fur sympathy? You’ll get little. You got into bed with Fields and his fiction and you will now be forced to live with the consequences - good and bad.

Dailybuck is a good guy. No reason to attack him. His post is certainly germane to our recent events.

Or is it joe germaine?

I dont mind players moving at all. I think for stability and numerous other reasons a date for it to close would be helpful for football programs in general.

There has never been a date after which players are prohibited to transfer. As a practical matter kit has always been the last day to enroll at the school to which they are transferring. And the NCAA isn't about to provide more ammo to lawyers who are kicking their ass.

I did and he did not look good. Only a spring game so who knows but he better be good otherwise OSU is in trouble - this was a self inflicted wound so I have zero sympathy for them.

Not to mention if he gets injured.

Agreed... Just thinking out loud if there is a better way to do this? Seems a little chaotic right now to me and just thinking if there is a better way going forward

What makes it chaotic is the rule change that prevents a coach from blocking a transfer and information being out in the open. Coaches make enough money that they should be able to deal with it. I'm disinclined to restore to them the ability to lock up a kid who doesn't want to be on their team.

Tosu is going after Tommy. Would be interesting. They love Fields athleticism but are concerned. He's got one strike already. If he doesn't work or gets hurt Ohio State is in trouble

I cannot imagine Stevens going to OSU. There, he'd be in the same situation as he is here, except worse.
I don't see a lot of other options other than backup or competing for start. Fields won't be staying by mid year if tosu has a choice. Too bad he was hurt this year as had he played well in a handful of games as a starter, things may have been different.

Maybe after poaching 2 defensive coaches from Michigan, OSU can poach a second string qb. :)
Nah, the players are seemingly more loyal to their side of a rivalry than the coaches. Or were. We’ll see.

It is insane. It’s like free agency for college sports.
What makes it worse is that a player is more likely to leave early for the NFL if they have a good season. The strong college teams getting it from both ends, name a young QB as starter and the backup QB leaves (backup QB at the strong programs is/was an excellent recruit). Young QB does well as a starter and leaves for the NFL.

Ohio State just learned a new truth when they brought in Fields, all their depth is gone. If Fields is a bust or gets injured, they are in big trouble.

Yeah, sure, Stevens wants to go from possibly being a backup to Cliff to being a certain backup to Fields. That would be smart.

you tell me where he is going go then. He's a fifth year senior, a one year guy, who has never started and isn't going to be on campus until a few weeks for month before the season.

Washington State is the only one I could think off the top of my head that doesn't have a clear starter that has a system that could take advantage of his skill set, not to mention whatever interest there may or may not have been from last years transfer talk.

I suspect Ohio State being Ohio State that they will attract talent under almost any circumstance.
Having said that, in the OSU case, these transfers seem to be in conflict with the prevalent view that “ we’ll start the best player regardless of their class.”
Adaptability comes to the fore.
