OSU Rumors

If David is offered the Oklahoma State job, he would be dumb not to take it.

That being said, they would just be keeping him warm for us long term and giving him the HC experience ;)

I almost posted in there that the “Fix to PSU” rumor must be a new replacement for the perpetually failed “Fix to 125” rumor . . . but then I saw the post speculating once again about slotting Fix in at 125 next year and figured I should keep my big yapper shut.

[Someone please post the Farley gif/meme]
Here's all the idiocy rolled into a single post:

Fix to Penn State to wrestle 125 because Robbie is done.

I don't think so.

Based on the salary numbers discussed on that OSU board, how David has seemingly set himself up for the long-term in State College, and what taking a HC job right now would mean for his still-ongoing career...doesn't seem like it would be that hard.

On top of that, is OSU a good job to take right now? If Smith is being run out of there, I have a hard time believing he's leaving behind a great situation. Then throw in all the boosters and "pressures" from the broad OSU wrestling community...doesn't seem like an ideal opportunity for someone's first college coaching gig.

I also doubt Taylor takes it.

But most of this paragraph could be said about PSU when we hired Cael -- the biggest differences being (1) PSU alumni pressure to merely beat Lehigh, (2) OKST already having a national recruiting profile.

Yep. I reported from the arena that an alum had told me that there was a group of alumni out for John.
But how many and how influential?

We have a Board of Trustees member who undercuts Franklin at every opportunity, and still there's no job security issue.

I'm by no means an expert, or even particularly knowledgeable, about PSU program specifics, but I never got the impression the PSU room had personnel issues (like are being rumored at OSU) at the time, nor was the program dealing with replacing a coaching/program legend.

Lots of ifs here, but if Smith is out and I’m the OkSt AD, my first call is to Mike Grey.

And if I’m Mike Grey, I’m very tempted to take it.

Why? Isn't he a Cornell alum?
From OkSt: experience running a program, high level of success doing so

From Mike Grey: There is only so much he can do at Cornell, and he’s done it. At OkSt, he’d have the resources to compete with PSU.

Yeah that's fair I guess. I see him not wanting to leave Shapiro. The kid is legit.

Cornell is a hell of a lot closer to PSU than Ok St.

Not to this extent, but there were some guys who got in legal trouble, some who partied during the season, etc.

And then when Cael banned in-season drinking, a starter got taken out for his 21st birthday. A few other guys went home on offseason weekends and drank there. Etc. Full team buy-in took some time.

I have a feeling Casey is the highest paid assistant coach in the land (or second to Cody) and Cael is not in fact the highest paid HC. Gonna be tough to break up that band, but I suppose money can always do the talking. David is interesting--but I can't see him wanting to divide his attention in the next couple of years.

I mostly feel sad if this is how John will go out. In spite of all the jokes, I've always really liked the guy.
I was told by a parent of a current 3x national champ that he asked Casey during recruiting of his son why Casey is not a head coach. Casey said he wants to do his work on the mat and not have to deal with all of the extras that come with being a head coach.

This, Casey loves his role at Penn State. Beyond being what he wants to do, it helps Cael makes sure he is very well compensated and also constantly heaps praises on him as equally as important to the dynasty. Perhaps I think the most symbolic thing done was during DT's biggest moment (Olympic Gold) of his career, Cael wanted him cornering his prodigal son and he just sat in the stands like a proud father.

If Fix wants his title, he has to go 125 where it’s virtually open (even if he is gassed) I don’t know how anyone watched his match against Vito and think there’s a scenario that result is ever flipped.

How can you look at Vito's career and think any of his results can't be flipped? People said the same thing after he nearly teched Pat Glory. Lost to him 2 weeks later. Even this year, he failed to bonus 30 seed Rotundo first round and was in a dog fight with Latona in the quarters (who also beat him this year). Then he went out and destroyed Fix and RBY. How do you make sense of that? You never know which Vito shows up.

Did anyone spot Cherry Valence?
