OT: For "critical thinkers", why NFL viewership is down

The data is useful to rebut the theory that the events listed caused a decline in viewership. It is completely valid for that purpose. That data CANNOT be used to say that CK's actions had any impact. As an aside, I searched far and wide to find average viewership graphs that went further back than 2013.

Isn't that the whole point of this debate?

ps.... you haven't addressed cord cutting in your critical thinking

Isn't that the whole point of this debate?

One subset of the debate has been whether "thug like" behavior has contributed to the decline. The data I posted completely disprove that theory because the behavior cited has been going on since at least 2000, but viewership hasn't declined until this year.

Now, we can disregard Occam's razor and come up with the following (but that's not very scientific):

The accumulative effects of "thug-like" behavior did not have an immediate impact, but instead built up over time until a Colin Kaepernick like event released the pent up frustrations of viewers, who then stopped watching in 2016....not because Colin Kaepernick called them racists, but rather, they found an outlet for their hatred of Rae Carruth (who no one even remembers).

Yes, we can always modify the theory.....just as the "ether theory" was modified again and again in attempts to save it.

ps.... you haven't addressed cord cutting in your critical thinking

The timing and the degree of change of "cord cutting" does not appear to explain the drop in 2016. You can, if you want to, learn to test your own theories.

So that graph shows a decline of ~0.25% for 2016, did you previously post any stats about the actual decline of NFL viewership?

Yes. Here is the best graph I could find. It looks (I could add it up, but I'm lazy) to be about 10% or maybe a bit more.

OK, did the arithmetic - decline from 2015 to 2016 is 11.4%

Did your critical thinking lead you to an actual market research study where people self reported players not standing as the number 1 reason? Refute that critical thinkers
https://blogs.shu.edu/sportspoll/20...t-of-factors-led-by-national-anthem-protests/

So, this data supports the notion that people are not watching because of Kaepernick and his nonsense. Of course, it could always be that people are now saying it because they want to push the NFL politically and are lying.

But I don't believe that. I believe many Americans are tired of being told that they and their neighbors are racist.

It can be effective to use an allegation of racism when reason and thinking have failed. It has worked in the past.

I am not sure it will work as well going forward. I think people are tired of it.

It is also quite effective to LIE to yourself and others about NOT being a racist. Does and Idiot know he is an Idiot" How would that work. Goodness this is much too easy :)
I don't think (know) that genetic engineering has advanced far enough to "remove" the dumb. Average American IQ = 98. And they vote :)
But, to be sure the future through Science will delete the dumb. It is only a matter of time. Thank you Jesus !!!

Focus, you moron. Your SAT correlated IQ of about 115 is leaving you helpless in this discussion.

God, if he exists, cannot be a moron by simple definition - a god is omnipotent and omniscient.

I really do not care if you think we are racists or not. We despise you. You're stupid, weak, and need a safe space.

I personally find the NFL's pose as something that upholds patriotism and "American values" as a sham. It's slick marketing, and that's all. Since most of the teams play in taxpayer funded and subsidized stadiums, it all rings more than a bit hollow. Add to that the fact that they were taking money to "support" the military, and it looks even worse. "Values" my ass.

My last response for YOU .... I am much older than most on this board AND had the benefit a REAL education PRIOR to the watering down that YOU took advantage of. Keep in mind a college degree is roughy the equal of a HS diploma of 25-35 years ago. It just is what it is !!!
And do some "reading". If you want I can recommend some books written at the 6th grade level as Lee Iacocca realized.

Have a nice day AND don't hurt yourself.

first of all, this thread is solely intended for critical thinkers. if you do not have a critical thinking club card, you cannot read this thread. I am teaching you critical thinking skills because there are too many people today who will cherry pick data to support their confirmation bias. I do not do that.

I have a degree in engineering from Penn State, which means I am much much much much smarter than people who do not. that's a scientific fact I learned freshman year, you dum dums!!

So on to our critical thinking exercise to address why I believe that a man silently kneeling on the sideline has offended so many good and true patriots of the greatest nation on earth!!! and I am talking about USA USA USA! you thought I meant Russia since they won an election this year. FOOLS!!!

After reading several different articles on the subject from the biased liberal media, I can only conclude (logically of course) that they are covering up the "Kaepernick effect" . . . because most of them cite reasons like the recent national election, the Cubs world series run, peak saturation of TV markets, rapidly evolving alternative markets, a lack of iconic players, reduction on the quality of play (especially in larger markets), and a host of more reasonable explanations for this down tick in viewership.

My superior critical thinking skills can only lead me to believe that these sensible and reasonable explanations MUST BE WRONG since they do not conform with my pre-conceived world view and outrage!!

Now I will post 17 links and obnoxious graphs from dubious sources to support my arguments. thus endeth the lesson!!

Im not a (ahem) critical thinker, myself. But, I did sleep at a Holiday Express last night. So...

..do you think the drop in viewership occurred during the same period as more people were going to college?

In the 70's, more people followed the NFL but fewer went to college. Now, more people go to college and fewer people follow the NFL. Hmmm...

Its amazing what a night spent at the Hotel Motel Holiday Inn can do.

It just doesn't matter, never has :) But "think" what you will.
Always best to be a "supermarket shopper", enjoy that. Did you call the "Butterball" hotline?

odd choice of words when applied to someone who has strictly followed established legal procedure- your own "critical thinking" or are you perhaps just parroting someone else?

(This is a rhetorical question, btw)

Wow. I'm really starting to get confused by this critical thinking stuff. Think I'll pass on it. I thought I'd be excited about learning how to think critically. This thread has killed my joy at prospect of becoming a true critical thinker. Starting to sound like test board material. No joy in Mudville.

Yeah, he sure is sly. Completely irrational too. As if we are trying to explain a trend that started in the 1970s and has culminated today.

We are trying to explain a precipitious drop in this year's numbers compared to 2015. Any trends in education do not match up with that.

You should not actively encourage stupidity.

Impact of various events upon NFL viewership:

2000: Rae Carruth wife murder.
2000: Ray Lewis allegedly murders someone.
2007: Mike Vick dogfighting comes to light.
2008: Plaxico Burress shoots himself.
2012: Aaron Hernandez murder.
2014: Ray Rice elevator incident.

super-bowl-us-tv-viewership.jpg

Critical thinking - it isn't for everyone.
This is kind of a useless chart if it's not normalized as a percent of population, or better yet adult population.

You are showing that Super Bowl viewership increased by ~35 million over a period when U.S. population increased by ~75 million. Not sure you can conclude much of anything from that.

Two things are damaging the NFL for me; 1) the injection of pre-game social justice lessons delivered to a captive, paying audience at stadiums, and 2) defenses not being allowed to play defense without penalty.
Overexposed Thursday nite has to go. To much referee involvement ,penalties, all teams play the same style , bad commissioner decisions, players getting in trouble, too much scoring TDs have become devalued, it all adds up to less interest in watching.

If it was all the reasons NFL gives, wouldn't cfb ratings be down too? I haven't seem any reference that it is. For me it's karpernick effect as well as the rest of the political bs and social bs (e.g., the pink for a month and I'm against cancer too and Costas gun control, etc). I just want to watch a game.

Sunday games are not down as much as the others. NFL has had a serious spate of bad matchups on TNF, MNF, SNF. Ratings have been stellar for recent Steeler / Patriot game and Cowboy / Redskin game.

So,
1. Matchups
2. Fantasy / Pools / Attention span drives people to RedZone (Sunday only though).
3. Not many iconic, respected players any more.
4. Far more like the NBA with a focus on personal rather than team, + the Kaepernick effect. ie. too many selfish idiots
5. MOST games end up being 1 score games, so like the NBA, only the last quarter at most really counts.
6. A game is 60 clock minutes, 18 play minutes, 73 commercial minutes + replays, etc .... who wants to watch 18 minutes packed into 3.5 hours.

That exceeds my critical thinking skills.

Here is a question:

Why are white people just so stupid?
You need to pay attention to things as they are written not as you twist them to be.
Please stop being stupid.

What sort of absolutely racist bullshit is that?

I don't know about any of that, but I take it you are OK with PSURO's racist statement above. Or will you condemn it?

Are you saying you agree with Smithton, or disagree?

His data seems almost irrefutable, while your post is cryptic at best.

His data is irrefutable, but his conclusion based on his data absolutely is NOT irrefutable.

Because he lacks critical thinking skills, he doesn't seem to understand that correlation is not the same thing as causation.
