OT: I’m gonna lose 25 pounds by June.

The primary care doc for a friend of mine told him, when his weight was close to 290, "if it gets to 300, sell. You do not want to wait for the split."

230 in January; 226 this morning. Harder than I thought it would be. I am very limited in cardio options due to foot flop as a result of a blown disc in my back years ago. Need to find a way to burn calories.
It’s a good question, what to do if you can’t run, treadmill, or elliptical. That’s a big deal. My issue lately is that I’m just not able to lose weight without significant cardio. It’s now or never so I need to find a way. (I think I have, but proof is in the pudding.)

Get a calorie counter. Limiting calories might help with limited cardio. Have you tried an exercise bike? That would at least support your foot and once on it you don't need to move it.

Okay, I’m in. Weight number is not so important, and if I promised -25 and hit it I might be sent to the morgue, or at least the hospital. I weighed in at 174.0 on 3/10, and am sitting at 172.0 now after and initial shock/cleanse/fast. I can pledge 166 by 6/30. I’m 56 years old.

Quick background. I’m an old sprinter, so distance running never came easy, but I did it as a lifestyle thing starting in 1990. 26 months ago I accomplished a full tear of my right quad tendon in a freak fall onto my hip while shoveling snow. Hip never really recovered so my leg strength is crap. This means a woefully short stride which kills my speed. Quad feels fine, although I can tell it got beat up.

Last summer I forced myself to work through the pain, etc and got myself to a post-op best of 6 miles at a sub-8:30 pace. Not particularly fast, but encouraging. Over shorter stretches I could run sub-5:00 pace (okay, I’ve been known to pace myself with recreational cyclists for ~400 meters and have freaked a few out). I then tried some sprint work and it was a disaster and set me back. I took a break and also re-did my workout room, so even treadmill has been off limits. Did 1+ mile two days ago at about a 9:30 clip. And did two 1 mile jogs b2b yesterday. This may take some time ...

Anyway, here are my targets:

Checkpoint 1 (May 15): 4 miles in 35:00 (8:45 pace)

Checkpoint 2 (June 30): 6 miles in 52:00 (8:40 pace)

Checkpoint 3 (Aug 31): 6 miles in 50:00 (8:20 pace)

Ultimate (Sep30): 5 miles in 40:00 (8:00 pace)

And if all this goes off I may try a small 5k race in Oct with a goal of 24:00 (~7:30 pace)

Note that times below may have some weird variation b/c my Garmin watch sometimes has an issue with finding satellites from my area. I’ll watch that closer as I near my goals.

Daily log (miles @avg mile pace)
3/12: 2.01 @9:32
3/13: 2.41 @9:44
3/14: 2.71 @9:24 (brrr!)
3/16: 3.25 @9:48
3/18: 3.63 @9:06 (windy af)

Without real exercise I decided to lose 20 lbs. I tried intermitant fasting. I didn't eat after dinner until 11am the next morning. Usually we are done eating dinner by 7pm, sometimes alittle later. From 7pm to 11 am that's 16 hours of not eating. Supposedly you start burning your fat at about 12 hours. I eat like normal from 11am thru dinner. All being I've tried to ear alittle healthier. It is hard once I get up in the morning to make it to 11am without eating. I starting taking a teaspoon of MCT oil. It helps cut the hunger some. Well it worked. Lost 20 pounds. But then the Holidays came along and I started to slide. Ended up putting 10 pounds back on. Rededicated myself and have lost 5 of that 10. Need to keep going and say lose 10 more pounds from here. Then hold it. Try intermitant fasting. It works.

I was able to lose 10 lbs while intermittent fasting, my eating schedule was 10A to 6P.

1/18/2021. 203 pounds. Today. 185, still want to lose a few more. Low sugar, low salt, low protein ( Mediterranean slant ) lots of hydration and a large does of exercise 6 days a week.

we did get our Friday night Fish Fry tonight in Pittsburgh so that’s a problem but I am making progress. I still would like to lose 3 to 5 more pounds.

Recommendation: get a Peloton or elliptical. or find a gym with spin classes
I have foot drop as well, caused by a broken neck when I was 17.
I don't know how severe you have it or even how severe I have it, but I typically can't make shoes last long due to the right shoe wearing out in big toe area. I have been this way for 35 years, and didn't even know there was a name for it until a couple weeks ago
But for inspiration, let me tell you, 30 years after I broke my neck I ran a marathon. So don't get down, keep your head up and find something that works for you.

I had just started swimming about two years ago and the gym closed. I did get a bike, that is probably the next best option. Thanks for feedback.

Wow, that is an amazing comeback. Provides inspiration for me. I’ve been too cheap to buy a Pelaton, but maybe I need to write the check. If I can score a covid shot, I’ll head to a gym and hit the elypticals and bikes.

Lost weight at a decent clip starting in June but the last few months have been a bit of a wash. I’ve kept the weight off but it’s a little yo-yo like back and forth now- lose 5, gain 5 back, lose 5 again. Using this thread as motivation to keep going.

Been doing the same for about two years. I hit my goal weight but still stick with the fasting schedule. Since I’m not trying to lose, I can have some treats after dinner. I eat from 12-8...lunch is oatmeal with peanut butter, nuts and fruit. Dinner is whatever I want, with some sweets after. I don’t miss eating breakfast at all.

I drink black coffee in the morning. IF also lowers insulin levels from what I’ve read, which is very beneficial.

I like this and swim suggestion as well as maybe a rower. I use one frequently and I don't get that sense that the push off with the foot would be any more stress than the repeated pushes on a cycle. I suppose each exercise may have a slightly different effect for different people even with similar injuries.

On another note, my back is back to normal, as are my workouts. I simply had to ease back into them for a bit being cautious of not causing the back strain to be too unhappy. But it feels fine this week to get back to full throttle.

I've seen people out and abut with the face shields only, and a shorter face shield. Maybe your gym would be okay with that while you are doing cardio .

The gym likely only cares about compliance. Any facemask or covering would do it. The problem with a face shield and cardio is that I'm guessing that it would fog which is a safety hazard on something like a treadmill. I've seen someone fly off of one before at a gym with a slight misstep.

By the way, these issues were the impetus of my $10k spending spree on the home gym. I couldn't be happier with this decision. Anytime we want, my wife and I go down to our basement and get a workout in. I may even add a couple more pieces down the line but we can do everything that we want with our layout now. I'll eventually recoup this investment with not paying the monthly gym memberships.

Better yet, far fewer medical bills.

County regulations.

Besides, it’s very likely that my inability to do my treadmill workout masked is due more to the crappy shape I am in rather than the mask itself. So I’m working on that aspect, doing the kettlebell treadmill workout without the kettlebell. The focus I am putting on my breathing will help.

Was down under 180 from 204 in January this morning but currently stuffing much face at Red Rabbit in DunCanyon
How did you find parking that place has been packed this spring.

meet my goal from 1/8/21 (188#) to 3-11-21 (165#). 5'8", 60 year old. weight watchers and a ski machine every night. did not have a cheat day and only 1 beer. Friday had 2 perpetuals and a nugget nectar from Troegs. Life is good again.

Like your stained glass avatar. Did you make that? Bought at arts Festival?

Just realized how close we are in size, age, and goal. Cheers!

214 today. I figured how to do the loaded carries on the treadmill, and have been doing them for a week. From my experience, this is a a big deal, no way I could hit 200 without them.

Loaded carries? Like we needed another gun thread ... 👨‍💻

Jim, one of the things I have been doing is flights of stairs. We are currently converting our basement and adding a gym that when finished will be great. In the meantime, we have a 15 step staircase ( carpeted ) in the house. I walk that up and down at least 150 times a day. It’s great exercise. Having had two knee replacements from sports injuries ( indoor soccer on Astro turf and indoor rock climbing ) I could not run. Now that I have been doing this taking a jog or even running is doable.

Wow, that is a lot of steps. Should enter the climbing the Empire State Building......next time they have it.

I can fill in the rest of the story behind this sequence. You tried to video it to prove it was loaded, but you blew the crap out the phone #2 was holding. So you tried it again with a still shot, but hadn’t yet figured out it was the pulling of the trigger that caused the problem. Another dead phone. But this is the third try once you realized NOT to pull the trigger. Amirite?
