OT - I'm Curious... Where did your BWI handle come from?

Mine is "professionally-related".

My avatar is admittedly borrowed from the internet, but my Boss even approved of same after prohibiting me from posting an actual chest shot of her "huge rack"

P.S. The only upside to getting "banned" is that you get to pick a new "moniker". This one's getting a bit old and I'm about ready to "move on". Two years from now it will seem like history.
85 grad, retired from playing soccer, started to play golf. First and only brand of golf clubs I play are Ping. I have lived in the 724 area code for the last 9 years; Ping 724.

I've grown quite accustomed to seeing a number of the handles on this board over the past 15 + years, even though I didn't post much until recently. In seeing some of the regulars on here over the years, I've always created an image in my head of what people actually look like.

It got me thinking... What's the story behind your handle?

Mine's pretty simple. I was a diehard 15 year old kid that was completely jacked to start the 2001 season with a rare night game against the #2 ranked Miami Hurricanes, scoring a late b-day present from my dad to attend on the 40 yard line. Will never forget Adam running out of that tunnel.

Also, I like that you can see when people joined.

The August 17th, 2001 next to my handle is somewhat creepy for me... 2 reasons:
  1. I can't help but think of the horrible tragedy that would take place less than a month after creating this account. It was a completely different world prior to 9/11, which feels like so long ago... but I can actually say reading this forum was a part of that world! There's not many other examples of that in my life.
  2. This board has been part of my life for HALF of it!.. I just turned 30 in June.
Here's to the next 15 years folks!

Grew up in Delaware.... live in South Jersey now. Go back to the early days.... used to love the game day chats, but havent posted in years, and somehow got reset to 0 during this hiatus.

For me, LMT = Lower Macungie Township, my place of residence for 10 years. LMT s a suburb of Allentown in the southwest corner of the Lehigh Valley and the fastest growing municipality in PA per 2010 census. It is a fantastic place to raise a family. On a side note, as nice as LMT is , i must say that eastern pa from the Lehigh Valley down through bucks, montgomery, chester, and lancaster counties is home to many fantastic municipalities. My different professional roles have exposed me to many of these spots and I think eastern PA has developed nicely in the last 2 decades.

Joke nickname my boyfriend, now husband, gave me as editorial writer for the Daily Collegian (Voice of Penn State)

Mine is a name I've used on other forums, particularly minor league hockey ones. Wasn't in a very creative mood when I signed up here, so I just recycled that one. So it has nothing to do with PSU or football.

Nicknames for my sons when they were young. One was just starting to play baseball and settling in as a catcher, so the connection to Carlton Fisk. His younger brother - short, solid and built like a tank.

Vacation there once a year, and combined it with the name of the famous Richard Strauss tone poem "Thus Spake Zarathustra" (aka the "2001" theme)

I might have thought Lower Merion Twp.....

PSU used to ring the "Victory Bell" after each win which was a recorded bell tolling once for each point we scored. I took it from that. I was "LinebackerU" at some point before on here. That has been taken by somebody else who rarely posts (at least that I've seen, maybe they are on premium). There was a gap there somewhere between then and 2001, which is where this site says I started, but it was before that. Maybe my memory is wrong. Doesn't matter. This was before the Governor's Victory Bell thing we have with Minnesota.

It used to be pretty nice after a big win listening to that thing ring out 35 times or whatever the case. I always thought if I were a visiting player that would piss me off listening to that thing "Bonggg, bonnggg, bonnngg..." as I walked off the field. Now it's a real bell our guys rattle on the way out.

I immigrated to the U.S. at age 13. I still have an accent. My friends hated the music I listened too. They nicknamed it Eurotrash.

Was on the ski team in high school. My favorite skier was Spyder Sabich. I wasn't very good but the school paid for my lift ticket at Ski Roundtop every Monday night. We would race from 5-6 when the slopes were closed down and then free skiing the rest of the night.

Should be self explanatory. If I had it to do over, I'd pick something different, as it could make me sound like I'm speaking for the band, instead of just one alum's opinion. Now, I doubt many people would assume that, however...

I used to play sax well enough to maybe try out for the BB. I knew guys in the BB who were brass players. They were great guys but not that great as musicians (I heard them play.) I found out too late you didn't have to be Clarence Clemons to be in the Band. But what they -did- do was put themselves out there... work, and go to practice however many times a week and they had a ball and a ton of stories. They had a blast. Girls, parties, road trips, etc. One of my friends was on the field in Tempe for the Fiesta, the MNC game with Miami. My main regret in college was not giving the BB a go. I was a terrible student, maybe I wouldn't even have been allowed to play due to grades, I don't know but I managed to graduate. Don't get me wrong, I KNOW there are many, mostly great musicians in the BB and not to throw shade on my buddies.

Looking back in hindsight it was stupid not to audition. There are few people who manage to get on that field and I was never going to do it any other way. I don't always agree with your take on things but props for being in the Blue Band. I went to Band-o-Rama a few times and when that big band is in Eisenhower blowing the top off the place it is a joy to behold. I know it takes a lot of time and effort, and being in bands myself, I know it's not always a lot of fun but that payoff on game day...wow.

Multiple choice:
a) My great great great grandfather Sviatoslav raped and pillaged Kievan Rus and we all looked up to him.
b) This is my maiden name.
c) 'Twas my college nickname and I've used it ever since for just about everything.
d) All of the above.

Let's just say certain sections were more competitive than others. All of the woodwinds were very competitive due to the unique instrumentation of the Blue Band (most musicians would say it's very unbalanced). Brass section was a mixed bag. Common misperceptions is that you're not good enough to make it--been fighting that for years. The Blue Band doesn't get as many students trying out as many other universities, but a big part of that is the branch campuses. Other schools most students start at their main campus, unlike Penn State. Which makes the quality of the band that much more impressive. If a student doesn't get involved Freshman year, very rare they even try later.

I was on the field for the MNC Fiesta Bowl. :)

And I'm pretty sure you remember the bell being in front of Wagner building.

As far as I know, it's always been a real bell, at least since ca. 1978 (it was our class gift). It was up in the upper deck for a long time and it was rung automatically, however.

There have actually been a few Victory Bells, going back to the early 60s. But when it was rung in the stadium over the loudspeakers it was a recording... of a different bell. It wasn't loud enough to be heard, even miked. Also, the 78 bell cracked.

I remember it being up there but I assumed incorrectly that it was a recording. I have no idea about any bell at Wagner Building. I think I had one class in there, total (for FHS above.)

I sat
There you go. Good article. All I remember is it used to be up by the scoreboard before they built the south upper stands and that tolling they played after wins.
I sat in front of the damn speakers one year when they moved the band into the end zone seats. And could see the bell. Not ringing. LOL

The original bell was outside Wagner when I was there.

I think this is mostly correct:

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/football/article_e3251240-c0c9-58a4-b0ad-7d59ad176af3.html
And I'll question the accuracy of some that article--it was a gift of the Class of 1978 and not the PSU cheerleading squad, for example.

One might wish to see this link as well. That one states that it is the original bell (but is wrong about the USS Pennsylvania bell--that's the actual ship's bell from the battleship and not one named for the state)

Given that we can't get the story of the origin of the We Are cheer straight, I wouldn't surprised. I always thought the Class of 78 donated the Victoey Bell that used to be hung beneath the scoreboard in the south stands because it was slats announced that way. Maybe the cheerleaders lobbied them to make it the class gift?

Say what? The We Are cheer started with my McAndrew Board handle.

Didn't it? o_O

Lived in Bloomsburg when I signed up. Was under the handle Nit-An_E for about a decade before that and honestly just got tired of typing it in.

My High School nickname was "Yogi". A number of guys from my HS went to PSU and the name followed me. The "man" was added by another PSU friend who's nickname was "Crazyman" since he would constantly crack 1 liners in class and drive us all crazy we called him Crazyman. He then added the "man " to Yogi. I graduated in March 71.
