OT: The 2019 Masters

Tee times are out. Tiger will be finishing his round when coverage starts at 3pm.

https://www.masters.com/en_US/players/pairings/index.html

A couple of big foursomes in a row... Rahm and Tiger followed by Fowler and McIlroy... crowds following those 2 foursomes next to each other will be big... the afternoons pairings are wild... DJ/DeChambeau/Jason Day followed by Phil/Justin Rose/Justin Thomas followed by Spieth/Casey/Koepka ...incredible afternoon pairings

Well they flip the schedule on Friday so afternoons are then mornings etc.

The NCAA’s last seven games are a tough act to follow, but The Masters has the firepower to meet or even raise the drama level!

The weather forecast for Fri-Sat-Sun is for rain, so the impact on the course could also add some drama.

Should be fun!

Feel bad for DJ. He'll be waiting forever to hit playing with Day and Dechambeau.

This is the first time since the World Rankings was created in 1986 that no player in the top-10 entering The Masters has previously won the tournament.

Unless you’ve been fortunate enough to walk Augusta National, one doesn’t realize the elevation differences on the course.....tv does not do it justice.

Apparently the tour caddies just voted Augusta the third toughest course to carry!
This. I repped my psu gear in Atlanta yesterday and several people made nice comments. Heading to the practice round shortly. The elevation changes are going to hurt today after a long day of bar hoping lol.

Ill Lion, Couldn't agree more. been lucky enough to go 4 times., Number 10 especially.

Actually, they play in threesomes on Thursday and Friday and twosomes on the weekend. They want Tiger in the afternoon on Friday for the ratings draw.

Fun to watch the Par Three event today.

Four hole-in-ones.....Finau changing into one high-top shoe, making fun of his dislocated ankle from last year.....Jack, Gary and Tom playing together, all hitting some great shots.....Ricky sinking a one-foot putt by going directly over a ball six inches in front of him.....Sandy Lyle (I believe the oldest player) winning with a -5.....and tremendous crowds on a stunningly beautiful day.

Thurs looks nice, with rain probabilities increasing more each day, Fri-Sat-Sun.

“Play away please!”

I have to go with Rose. My dark horse is Cameron Smith, an Australian who has a lot of game.

May I ask how you were able to get tickets? Is it worth the effort to join the Masters lottery?
Thanks!

Just my $.02. I have gotten NCAA Final Four tickets through the lottery before, have never gotten Augusta tickets through the lottery. But I keep trying, very very easy to keep entering, someone’s gotta get lucky!

Three I will not root for: Sergio, Cheapskate and Table For One.

Three without a major I can root for, The Three F's: Finau, Fleetwood and Fowler.

Phil wins another. Big groups at the end tomorrow but Media will start by replaying every Wood’s shot from previous 4 hours.

Masters weekend always signified that spring is here and only nice weather for the next 6 months.

Sounds like you need to move to a better climate

Thanks!

It's basically zero effort for a chance to pay 70-100 for a ticket instead of 800-2000. So yeah it's worth it

Sandy Lyle is a couple of months past 61. Nicklaus (79) and Player (83) are decades older. There were a bunch of others who are older too - Ben Crenshaw (67), Fuzzy Zoeller (67), Craig Stadler (65), Tom Watson (63), Mark O'Meara (62), Bernhard Langer (61 but older), and Nick Faldo (61 but older).

Lyle also didn't win - he lost in a playoff to Mike Wallace.

But the tournament was fun to watch.

Yes join the lottery. I know of at least 8 people that have won the right to get tickets. Of my regular foursome we have won 3 practice round. I got to go 4 times, we were rained out one year and sent off the course at 1. They gave us the right to get tickets the next year.

I like Fleetwood but not sure he has the stones down the stretch on Sunday. My dark horse is Ian Poulter who hasn't been playing well but is coming on and is a GREAT pressure player.

I thought they said on the broadcast that Lyle was the oldest player to win it (which is what I meant).....but they were talking about Watson’s winning the Par 3 event last year, my goof.

Lyle had won the event when I turned it off, but apparently they found a scoring error that meant Wallace was also -5.....which lead to Wallace winning the event on the third playoff hole.

It WAS a lot of fun to watch!

Why do I get the feeling Adam Scott is gonna do it again? But I am cheering for Tiger big time.

I like Rory this week. Hits the driver far and straight. We’ll see if the work with Faxon helps his putting.

I was fortunate enough to go in 2015 when Spieth dominated. Illinois is totally right, the camera angles are so scripted that you have no idea exactly how hilly the grounds are, or how many shitters/food stands are interspersed throughout, or exactly how ridiculous Bubba's hooked wedge in 2012 was.

I've never won through the Lottery but did luck into Thurs - Sun tickets through a familial connection who grew up in Augusta.

Exactly. I'd love to see Phil win one more major.

Yep that is the reason to go to truly see how undulated the course is. Some holes are straight up and down. 17 green is ridiculous. I couldn’t believe how many undulations were in that green and the cameras make it look almost flat.

Funny story about the Masters lottery. Three to four years ago, four of us played golf at Galen Hall in Berks County. We finished just after 6:00 and the bar at the course was closed. Who the heck closes a golf course bar while there are groups on the course?? So, we go around the corner to Huie's Gray Fox Inn. For dive bar connoisseurs, this is a must visit! I felt I was in the Hotel California, "I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'"! or "You can check out at anytime, But you can never leave"!

There were three "patrons" in there when we arrived. (Patrons is Masters' parlance for fans, for Huies, lost souls might be better). A farmer, a printer (George) and one other guy who never looked up or talked. Huie (the owner) was tending bar, drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette. I asked if that was legal for a bartender to drink on duty and he said the owner could.(??) It was like another world there but it was also a little piece of heaven. My friend, Clyde, bought the bar a drink (7 people) and got change back for his $10!! (which I think was actually my $10 bill that I lost on the match).

Anyway, I noticed Huie was wearing a Masters golf hat. I asked him if he had been to Augusta. He said no, but George (across the bar) had gone last spring. Huie had given him some money to buy him the hat while he was there. So, Clyde (a PSU Engineer) asked George how he got tickets. George said his buddy had entered the Masters' lottery and won tickets, so his golf group went. He said his buddy had sent an entry for the next year and they were hoping to be selected again. Clyde looks at him and says "you know George, if you sent an entry too, you would double your chances to win". George looked very confused at first, but then brightened up and said, "that's a great idea, we didn't think you were allowed to do that"! Before we left, George and Clyde were "best buds"! He even asked Clyde to call him if we ever needed a fourth. He thought we would be "good guys" to play golf with. (What he doesn't know won't hurt him).

Overall, if you can stand a little cigarette smoke, Huie's Gray Fox inn was a pretty nice place (and an unforgettable experience) to grab a beer or two. I'd bet those three "patrons" will still be sitting there!

I have played Galen Hall a few times there in Wernesville. Also been there for a scramble tournament too. It has a "moated" par 3 green. The tournament would do a double your money on landing on the green for that hole. They made a good bit of cash on that day.

Went on Monday for the first time. My observations...

The course was pretty much the elevation changes that I expected. I guess part of it is that everyone talks about the elevation changes and how dramatic they are, so I was expecting the same thing that I saw.

The most surprising thing to me was the lack of distance between some of the greens and tees, especially as compared to what I thought I was seeing on TV. I always thought the 12th tee was well to the right of the 11th green and that there was a ton of room to bail out. Being there, guys on the 12th tee would be in danger if an average amateur was playing and sliced one out to the right. On TV, it looks to me like the 14th tee isn't anywhere close to the 13th green (and there are no patrons near 13), but being there, it's a great viewing spot as you can be right between the two of them and close to everything.

Being there, it reminds me a lot of Disney World. Never a piece of trash to be found anywhere. Every person working is outgoing, accommodating, friendly, etc. Everything is incredibly efficient (going to the bathroom is an experience, as I've never seen a line move so quickly and they've got attendants identifying open spots and directing you there). Concessions lines keep moving as they have all the drinks poured, sandwiches out for you, etc. Also laugh that for wet spots, they have sand laid down to dry them out. But the sand is colored green to mix in with the rest of the grass, so you'd never know it on TV.

I remember the "moated green". it's not a short iron, either, fairly long hole IIRC. The second hole is bizarre, too! The day we played, they had a contest on the 7th hole, I believe. It's a short par three, up the hill. If you could get your tee shot within the flagstaff, "double your money". We could only see the top of the flagstick from the tee. When we got up to the green, the flag stick was about three feet tall!!

Yeah #2 was a Par 5 I believe that went up hill and then past the crest of the hill was a road to get to some of the houses inside the course, and then the hole almost went straight down and dog legged left. If you didn't get some roll off of the hill and you were to the left side of the fairway, you then had a real awkward shot, tough to hit.

they rebuilt #5. it will play as a 495 yard par 4. Ouch. It will be one of the three hardest holes this week
