OT: The 2019 Masters

Funny story about the Masters lottery. Three to four years ago, four of us played golf at Galen Hall in Berks County. We finished just after 6:00 and the bar at the course was closed. Who the heck closes a golf course bar while there are groups on the course?? So, we go around the corner to Huie's Gray Fox Inn. For dive bar connoisseurs, this is a must visit! I felt I was in the Hotel California, "I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'"! or "You can check out at anytime, But you can never leave"!

There were three "patrons" in there when we arrived. (Patrons is Masters' parlance for fans, for Huies, lost souls might be better). A farmer, a printer (George) and one other guy who never looked up or talked. Huie (the owner) was tending bar, drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette. I asked if that was legal for a bartender to drink on duty and he said the owner could.(??) It was like another world there but it was also a little piece of heaven. My friend, Clyde, bought the bar a drink (7 people) and got change back for his $10!! (which I think was actually my $10 bill that I lost on the match).

Anyway, I noticed Huie was wearing a Masters golf hat. I asked him if he had been to Augusta. He said no, but George (across the bar) had gone last spring. Huie had given him some money to buy him the hat while he was there. So, Clyde (a PSU Engineer) asked George how he got tickets. George said his buddy had entered the Masters' lottery and won tickets, so his golf group went. He said his buddy had sent an entry for the next year and they were hoping to be selected again. Clyde looks at him and says "you know George, if you sent an entry too, you would double your chances to win". George looked very confused at first, but then brightened up and said, "that's a great idea, we didn't think you were allowed to do that"! Before we left, George and Clyde were "best buds"! He even asked Clyde to call him if we ever needed a fourth. He thought we would be "good guys" to play golf with. (What he doesn't know won't hurt him).

Overall, if you can stand a little cigarette smoke, Huie's Gray Fox inn was a pretty nice place (and an unforgettable experience) to grab a beer or two. I'd bet those three "patrons" will still be sitting there!

love Galen Hall and Huie's, it's been a while since I played there. We used to drive the cart to Huie's from the third tee to grab a six pack or two.

Yes join the lottery. I know of at least 8 people that have won the right to get tickets. Of my regular foursome we have won 3 practice round. I got to go 4 times, we were rained out one year and sent off the course at 1. They gave us the right to get tickets the next year.
How much are the Thursday to Sunday tickets?

Depends upon if you’re talking about face value from the club, or purchasing them on the secondary market. All tickets are cheap when purchased directly from Augusta.

Very true.....I believe practice rounds are $75 face value, tournament rounds are $115 face value. That’s why you ALWAYS enter the annual lottery!

For how many tickets per day? Please don’t say one. Is that a lottery price?

That would be the approx ballpark market price for one week-long ticket bought through someone on stub-hub or if you bought them on the street in Augusta during the tournament.

Look to my prior post for the price of tickets if you won tickets in the annual lottery.

I was fortunate that my friend scored a Wednesday ticket for me. When I looked to purchase a Wednesday only ticket the price was $1,950.

I like the leaderboard from the Masters web site. It looks just like the one on 18.

At most tournaments (Masters might be an exception), I have found it super easy to arrive around 2PM and score free pass from someone who's leaving.

Much different than most other sports, some people (mostly corporate sponsors & their guests) come, watch a bit, hit the hospitality tent for lunch, & leave. Or they might have come to watch one player, or got too hot, or whatever. But they leave before the days play is over, and the pass is worthless to them.

Again, Masters is possibility more restricted, but seen PGA, US open, etc this way.

There is a secondary market, but it costs $ (and some risk). Tickets can only be scanned twice in a day, so if you buy them off someone that’s leaving, you’re rolling the dice that they’ve only gone thru a gate once that day.

Funny story...Monday night, went out to a bar in Augusta to watch a very overrated Virginia basketball team. Got talking to the two guys at the next table, as one of them worked in the Ohio St athletic department, and the other one lived in Augusta. Every year, the guy from Augusta said he’d buy tix off someone leaving for the day for $50-$100 on a practice round day. They did just that on Monday for $50 each around 3pm, and as they walked up to the gate, the horn sounded to close the course for the day due to lightning. $100 down the drain.

That’s not from today.....surprised ANY tournament let that ass in (the fan, not Tiger).

You are that offended by it? It was the players a few weeks ago and Tiger thought it was hilarious, smiled the entire time at the guy. Life is no fun if you cant laugh at yourself and others from time to time.

If I saw that shirt at a health club or on a jogger or at a beach, I’d laugh. I smiled when I saw it last night.

But to post that pic in a thread about The Masters I thought was tacky. And again, I would think the fan would not be admitted / would be tossed from most tour events. I’d expect to see that shirt at the TPC-Scottsdale drunkfest.

Fair, is it possible he had a light jacket zipped over it and took the jacket off in that moment?

Great tournament thus far. Leader board is stacked.
Yeah, apparently historically stacked, according to this ESPN article

This Masters literally has the most loaded leaderboard ever

There is more star power atop the leaderboard than on the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard.
Five players share the 36-hole lead, and each of them -- Italy's Francesco Molinari (2018 Open Championship), Australia's Jason Day (2015 PGA Championship) and Adam Scott (2013 Masters), South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen (2010 Open Championship) and American Brooks Koepka (2017 and '18 U.S. Open and 2018 PGA) -- has at least one major championship title.
Actually, five players with major titles have never shared the lead after any round in any major. In fact, it's the first time since the 2002 PGA Championship that any five players -- with or without a major title -- have shared the 36-hole lead at a major.

And, oh, by the way, Tiger Woods, with his 14 major championships, and Dustin Johnson, with his 2016 U.S. Open title, are only 1 shot back.

They paired poulter and woods together. Man that is not good for either.

Thanks for stating the obvious. They are still paired together.

In other news, the sun rose in the east today.

Look at your context and you make it sound like the tourney put them together. I was gonna state the same reply but chose not to.

Walking around the course Mon-Wed and then being around the last two days to see the conditions, it’s surprising that the lead isn’t better than 7. But the stacked board with all of the world-class players on it is gonna turn this into a total shootout over the next two (three? oh heck no) days.

Of course they are paired from there scores. They are always paired from the scores. Really we are going to jump on context or grammar? Must be a slow morning. Can you guys drink your damn coffee already.

Went on Monday for the first time. My observations...

The course was pretty much the elevation changes that I expected. I guess part of it is that everyone talks about the elevation changes and how dramatic they are, so I was expecting the same thing that I saw.

The most surprising thing to me was the lack of distance between some of the greens and tees, especially as compared to what I thought I was seeing on TV. I always thought the 12th tee was well to the right of the 11th green and that there was a ton of room to bail out. Being there, guys on the 12th tee would be in danger if an average amateur was playing and sliced one out to the right. On TV, it looks to me like the 14th tee isn't anywhere close to the 13th green (and there are no patrons near 13), but being there, it's a great viewing spot as you can be right between the two of them and close to everything.

Being there, it reminds me a lot of Disney World. Never a piece of trash to be found anywhere. Every person working is outgoing, accommodating, friendly, etc. Everything is incredibly efficient (going to the bathroom is an experience, as I've never seen a line move so quickly and they've got attendants identifying open spots and directing you there). Concessions lines keep moving as they have all the drinks poured, sandwiches out for you, etc. Also laugh that for wet spots, they have sand laid down to dry them out. But the sand is colored green to mix in with the rest of the grass, so you'd never know it on TV.
I, too, was amazed at the efficiency in getting patrons through both the restroom and concession lines. My mom (a tavern owner) always said “make it easy for them to give us their money”.
Although the concession prices are ridiculously low at Augusta, I would have taken my mom there the very next year after my first visit to allow her to appreciate their efficiency (if she was still around). Of course, she would have had a stroke when I bought a $400.00 cashmere sweater! LOL, God I miss her!

Ok, “there” scores.....we’ll jump on spelling.

So, serious question, why do you think the pairing “is not good for either”?

Damn spell check

Crowd will heckle or be loud for and when poulter is playing.

Poulter is playing Ryder cup match play so get ready for some drama

The good thing about the masters is they don’t rip you off on concessions. Not to mention how many here have masters cups at home.

Maybe Phoenix but I don’t see heckling at Augusta. I think good pairing. Both older accomplished players. Pouter and Tiger will be fun to watch on moving day.

Just read on line that hank Haney said they do not like each other.

Cheater putter

Apparently you haven’t watched much golf in the last few months. Adam has been using a short putter that looks like the Taylormade Spider but with a bigger head. And if he goes to the long putter, he’s employing the same stroke that Kuchar and Webb Simpson use - up the forearm. Unless you think those two are cheating too.
