OT Thoughts on "Comrade Detective" on Amazon Prime or HBO "Flight of the Conchords" before I invest

time to watch. Are they both Funny

I loved Comrade Detective for the cheesy, Cold War propaganda piece it was. It is especially delightful knowing that, shortly after the filming, Nicolae Ceaușescu, the former president of Romania, and his wife were put up against a wall and shot by anti-communist partisans. The lead actor, incidentally, continued his career in the West after the fall of the Berlin wall.

Flight of the Conchords is awful.

This is all you need to know. If psuro says it's awful, then it's likely outstanding. Not kidding about that.
FotC is funny, but the humor is not for everyone. Very quirky and dry.
I couldn't get into Comrade Detective.

Agree but how can you not appreciate creative and well crafted comedy writing. Same people who made talentless hacks like Adam Sandler billionaires. I don't need a laugh track or some poorly performed slapstick in my comedy. This is funny on many levels, particularly if you know New Zealand and Aussie rivalry/dynamics. Murray (Rhys Darby) was on par with Ari Gold for great one liners.

Flight of the Conchords is fantastic. I loved those guys stand up before they did the show. Most of the songs were ones they’d already and been performing as part of their comedy routine, they just incorporated them into a show.

FotC is not for everyone, but there aren't too many comedies that everyone loves (some people hate Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler or Monty Python, but they have all been wildly successful).

Having said that, I love FotC. It's my second favorite HBO comedy of all time (behind Curb, which might be the greatest comedy of all time).

Give it a try.

Never saw Comrade Detective but I did enjoy Flight of the Conchords. But, as others have stated, it's not for everyone. Give it a half hour of your time.

In and of itself, it could be the worst cinematic effort ever.

Isn't the dubbed over dialogue the idea? I was somewhat confused while watching, but thought it was funny for the most part.

On a side note, Bucharest is one of the coolest cities I've ever been to. VERY ugly in a lot of ways, but that's kind of its appeal. Found people there to be quite friendly. Would go back!

I just got back from Bucharest (I listened online to the App State game at 10:30 p.m. from there before catching a ride to the airport at 3 a.m.). Ceaușescu built a national palace that is second in size only to the Pentagon, but most of the rooms were never used. He also tore down entire neighborhoods and put up ugly box residential buildings in the promenade leading to the palace. There's still bullet holes in the walls of the communist secret police building. People are extremely friendly and they've got a lot of good stories about living there in the 1980s. Lots of good restaurants in the pedestrian mall area.
The city of Brasov in the mountains of Transylvania is a fun place. It's also near Dracula's castle.

Yep! I wanted to visit Brasov, but it's my understanding that there's been an airport in the works for quiet some time. Not sure if construction has started yet or not. (Not as accessible)

I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn in Old Town. Great location with lots to see in close walking distance.

Out of curiosity, what brought you there? I only ask because as far as Europe goes, it feels very off the beaten path. I did an Eastern Europe trip last fall and also visited Budapest (though Hungarians swear it's Central Europe and not Eastern) Prague, Belgrade, Warsaw, and Bratislava.

I visited Budapest, Belgrade (Serbia), Bulgaria and Romania on a Danube River cruise. My mother's family is from Budapest and my father's family is from Romania, so I wanted to see those countries.
I was walking in a very non-touristy area of Belgrade, the few English-language street signs had vanished, and I asked someone with a U.S. baseball cap for directions. The guy turned out to be a Penn State graduate from Bethlehem now living in Norristown.

Good stuff. I really enjoyed Belgrade too.

I haven't been to any former USSR countries, but of the countries I mentioned, I'm in the minority that's more fond of Eastern Europe than Western.
