PA HS Wrestling thread

Clyde was one tough dude, but had nothing for Schalles.

Wade told me a funny story via email.
I dont think he will mind it being repeated.

Iirc .. Clyde had beaten him pretty badly in h.s. before Schalles had become the great pinner.
Right before their matchup in college, I guess as intimidation, Frantz said to him "Well, this wont take very long."
Then Schalles pinned him the first period, and Schalles said "Well, you were right, that didnt take very long."

For some reason, Wade is my favorite wrestler.😊

I guess it was in '69 that Schalles pulled off one of the biggest upsets in PA history, at least that's what people thought at the time. He beat Chatman of Trinity, who was a returning state champ and considered a superstar. I was there. The place went nuts.

In retrospect, it doesn't look like that much of an upset.

Wade being Wade.
Jerry White wrestled for West Branch in high school (and Penn State) and Wade had a thing for one of Jerry's cousins. Wade spent a lot of 1972-73 traveling to West Branch school and working out with Jerry. A Rodgers kid from North Allegheny had pinned Don Rohn and won states the year before and was the favorite to repeat. At weigh-ins on Friday Wade found Rogers and yelled at him, "hey Rogers, White has been working out with me and I showed him how to pin you."
Rogers got beat that night, White won states and eventually finished 3rd for PSU.

I was there too, and Rec Hall did really go nuts. It was all the more shocking in that Chatman had the match in hand in the 3rd period, up something like 5-2. And then all of a sudden Schalles pulled an elevator and pinned him in a matter of seconds.

check this my dads name was Noyd, now thats a bad name!!

PIAA passed competitive formula to include Team Wrestling.

Currently it means any team 6 points or above in the current 2 year cycle in AA would have to go AAA the next cycle in team and individual States.

Make the quarters 2 points
Make the semis 3 points
Make finals 4 points.
Plus having 2 transfers on the roster.

Saucon, Chestnut Ridge, Brookville quarters no transfers.
Burgettstown and Berks Catholic semis no transfers.
FCA finals no transfers.
Notre Dame quarters and 2 transfers
Fort LeBoeuf finals and 1 transfer.

Wow, this will definitely change the totem pole in AA. Obviously FCA will have to bump up. NDGP too. This is a big implication in both team and individual brackets.

Any idea as to what qualifies as a transfer? Enrolling in the school prior to freshman year? After freshman year? anytime after 6th grade? Does a kid coming from a prep school count? Out of state count?

In the new world of HS club wrestling there is a lot of maneuvering (even at the elementary level) to position kids and teams for success. The real wild cards are the out of state kids recruited in. McCort and Penns Valley each got a few last year, this is a growing trend with M2 and other elite clubs in PA. McCort won't be affected because they've already declared AAA but others will.

I can’t say for sure but id think after HS starts.

So faith has 0 points right now. They’d have to make the quarters next year which they obviously should but also receive 2 transfers on this years team.

Notre Dane wound need to make the final to get to 6 points. They already hit the 2 transfer mark.

Typical PIAA overcomplicated "solution." Schools will be forced up in the next 2-year cycle (not the current one). If their studs graduate in the current cycle, going AAA is more incentive to recruit. And then after that cycle, back down to AA they go.

The right solution is a separate class for Schools Without Borders. Next best is permanent AAA for them.

This is some great news for the real home grown programs. I would double check these schools and the No Transfers. Just bump up all the private schools and be done with it.

Very true. I agree PIAA making this a lot harder than they need to be.
AA, AAA and private schools make the most sense. Or just make all private schools bump to AAA. Problem solved

If I’m a coach at one of these top schools that did well enough in PIAA team playoffs to garner points toward the formula, I would simply opt out of team duals the second season of the cycle. Battling for a team title at individual states and keeping the wrestlers down in AA rather than bumping up may be better for s small school program than yo-yo-ing back and forth between AA and AAA

Bouzakis back to Sem! PIAA allowed him in last year, he stole a state title from a public school kid and then back to preps.

FL to Sem to NDGP to Sem too ???? Next year? Maybe Becca with their new staff.
