Football Penn State set to hire Ohio State DC Jim Knowles as Defensive Coordinator

When you're chasing people you have to get them. Period. If you don't you're wasting time and resources as you correctly stated. That can't happen. Franklin got his best players to return and spent a lot of NIL resource doing so...now he can't get any of his top choices to come here. Lynn stayed on a sinking ship while Knowles is apparently (or has) going to an OU team with another coach that's firmly on the hot seat. Golden, if in play, went to Cincy and another coach on the hot seat.

Things can work out just fine but there's too many swings and misses. The objective isn't to miss out on the guys you want.
The reality is you don’t know what he missed on or didn’t miss on. You weren’t in the interviews and you don’t know who eventually will get the job. Lynn’s wife is from the West Coast. Knowles fiancée is from Oklahoma and has kids in school there. Time will tell.

Right...he just interviewed them for fun. He clearly didn't want either.

Reports are that we got him so….

There is a veritable mountain of things Lando doesn’t know but that never stops him from pontificating on here non-stop. Can’t wait for his “witty” response to this post because he also always has to have the final word on everything.

He’s not. It’s all salary drive up smoke and mirrors. They bought a team that any DC would be doing well with.

The truth is hes at minimum a competent DC. Im pretty confident that he’s better tgan Tom Allen. We paid what $1.2 mill over what another top DC costs at this point and I dont think that extra $1.2 mill really hurts us so Im happy with the hire.

Reports are that we got who? Knowles?

Where are these reports?

I mean, he would be a great hire. But very unlikely we're going to outpay OSU for Knowles. They'll match whatever we come up with. And he'd have a great (probably top-5 in America) defense in Columbus next year, so it just seems like an odd move.

I get Oklahoma given the family situation. Maybe he's ready for the next challenge? I don't know.

It did seem like it took Knowles a solid 2+ years to really implement his system at OSU, though. Same with Oklahoma State. It's a very nuanced system that takes time to master. That OSU defense got cooked in their big games in 2022. Hell, we scored 31 on them at home. UGA and Michigan both torched that defense late in those games.

He's an elite DC, but he's definitely not a plug-and-play/immediate results guy.

Yep...tOSU sites stating that he's told the staff he is staying in Ohio.

no. he is going to stay at tOSU for a nice raise.

I haven't seen that, either. I honestly don't think anybody knows.

If we get him -- great. Should probably temper expectations, though. His system takes a year or two to really click.

If we don't get him -- oh well.

But regardless, he's a great DC.

well, there is nothing official so who knows? Bottom line is the longer this goes on the worse for PSU IMHO. We've never won bidding wars and I don't expect this to be any different.

Thess reports don't exist. Most gave him going back to OSU

Well, I am always hopeful. But I don't recall a single time when PSU won a bidding war for a coach or a player. It isn't our jam. And while this can be a first, I don't expect it.
At this point everyone needs to understand it isn't $. There are "working conditions " that are the issue.$ is everywhere he has options.

It was on my x feed this morning. We are being made to look like fools throughout this entire dc search with dcs using us to get a raise from their existing employer.
I don’t know if we look like fools. We are working hard to get a top DC. It sets the price though. And everyone else is going to be told that they are a distant #2.

I love Franklin, but this process has been an utter failure. In both cases the candidate leveraged our offer for more money at his current school. The only thing Franklin accomplished was resetting the DC salaries for the entire sport.

Also..if accurate and Knowles stays for upward of $3.2MM...curious what Hartline now "demands"...the problem with all of these salary increases for Coaches etc ( for the Univeristy's) ..is the bar keeps getting set higher and higher..thus the stability of your AC staying...long term...becomes harder and harder...

I follow OSU - somewhat - on their sites and through my son (an OSU grad) - and they've been concerned about his connection to Oklahoma. The Sooners are also offering him around $3 million +. I also believe that he his fiancee also lives in Oklahoma and doesn't want to leave. Stay tuned - more to come in the next few days to week

And yet the vast majority of OSU's defense was 4 and 5 year veterans. Downs was the only transfer on defense. There were only 6 transfers on the roster including a redshirt QB and two O linemen who were injured early in the season and lost for the year. The vast majority of the NIL money OSU's collectives spent was to keep veteran players for another year...something every major team is doing. Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M and others all spent more in NIL than OSU. OSU's number just went public and the haters ran with it. Hell, UM just spent $12 mil on an unproven freshman QB. After spending $16 mil on their 2024 team.

It's no secret that Knowles and Larry Johnson aren't BFFs and there's been tension with who gets to make the call on how their DL is used.
Yes, that has been an issue @ OSU and I thought Knowles won that tug-of-war earlier this season. I also thought 2024 would be LJ, Srs last season as a football coach. Have you heard if he is retiring?

Sonny Styles was also a portal gain for OSU two years ago. Him and Downs were huge additions to that defense.

Sonny Styles was also a portal addition two years ago to the OSU defense. With the portal in of Downs, Styles was able to play more of a LBer role in blitz packages instead of playing Safety. Styles & Downs were huge additions for the OSU defense.

Sonny was recruited out of high school ( Pickerington North ) and wasn't a transfer. His brother Lorenzo Jr WAS a transfer from ND but really hasn't been much of a factor in his two years in Columbus. And if I remember correctly he wasn't really a "big money" guy. He came to OSU because he was unhappy at ND, wanted to return home ( the family is from the Columbus area and Dad was a standout linebacker at OSU in the 90s) and to change positions and play with his brother. NIL wasn't really a big issue with him.

Your NIL numbers are incorrect. For the 2024 season OSU was #2 at $20M. Texas was #1.
