PIAA 2023 postseason

It ❤️man land- (He will be strutting around at Hershey telling everyone how great d11 is). Love or hate Coach Harer but if he can get a private school in D4 things would change at the state level.

PIAA DISTRICT 11: super team capital of PA

AA: NDGP has 10 finalists

AAA: BECAHI has 11 finalists

Faith Academy has 11 in the D1-12 Finals.

When is the last time a homegrown school ever had 11-12 kids in the district finals. Privates and public are on level playing fields
My privates are above a level playing field.

D4 action

Kaden Rodarmel #9 seed into the finals! No real upsets. Harers, Johnson and Milheim brothers all dominating. One Wentzel and one Wirnsberger brother in the finals.

public or private doesn't really matter when they can bring in all the good kids!
What public school brings in enough talent to win 10-12 individual district championships? Faith, Becca and NDGP are making a mockery out of their district tournaments.

I know they’re both ‘committed’ to OSU but saw Kaedyn (?) at a youth tournament at MT walking around in a PSU wrestling shirt. I’m sure it doesn’t mean anything but thought it was interesting.
Wonder if it was bearclaws

Lots of talk about older Harer, but the little one might end up being better. He beat up Wentzel 8-1. Wentzel is a Hs state Champion, a senior with 150 wins and a PSU commit. Brandt Harer is the real deal.
Brandt and Connor are hammers

Perry lost to Manville 3-0 in the NW Regional final. Unfortunately that means he'll be on Rath's side at states.

Rath just wrecked a SR D1 commit 16-7 in the D11 finals. 7 takedowns + a reversal in 6 min. High motor, constant attacks, clean finishes. Skilled at the HS level, has 9 wins this year over PA/NJ/OH/national preps champs and finalists, and is just a SO. We should be following him if we aren't already.

Dad went to Lehigh and goes to BECA so imagine they'll be our biggest competition (kind of like Crookham), he is a M2 kid though.

Rath, Perry and Manville all in the same states bracket is crazy. I would agree, Rath gets the nod and the favorite in my opinion. He owns a win over Manville in the preseason.

As far as I know, Sierra is the first girl in PA to win an individual district title
This is great. Will girls be allowed to compete in boys once girls gets sanctioned? Sierra will need to get a good placing next week at Regionals to have a shot to place at states. Let’s go Sierra

TBD -- but most likely outcome is that for schools with both teams, girls can't compete for both (and same for boys).

Thank you. I was thinking the same thing. This could eliminate the secret weapon against the private schools. Shucks

I'm mystified how Notre Dame Green Pond gets to wrestle post season while McCort has to sit. That's a joke.

Easy answer- NDGP is in district 11. Some areas in the commonwealth don’t have the same rules.
Not sure what Mcruit would get out of PIAA states anyway. I wouldn’t blame them if they never wrestled them again. A couples of us were talking at d4 yesterday, Mcruit could have won 114,121,127,132 and possibly 139. At least Faith will have competition next season, if they come back

If you're counting on Wentzel or Nasdeo to be difference makers for PSU in the future you probably need to re-evaluate. I can tell you first-hand from both situations the interest was more from the kids and not PSU with much of any offer. Hopefully they prove it to be wrong but I can tell the projection from college coaches is that they are about in the same league as Steen or even below. So they are still looking for difference makers in the lightweights as of now. I hope the kids make that unnecessary with some hard work.

For now, let's concern ourselves more with their 2023 postseason paths.

Wentzel (AA 121) will likely face Brandt Harer again in the NE Regional finals; Harer won both prior matches by major.

Wentzel will likely have the best possible draw at states -- separated from both Harer and S3 Gauge Botero. (Botero will be the 1 seed regardless. Wentzel will be the 2 seed if he wins regionals. Harer as a freshman will be the 4 seed if he wins regionals.) Lurking: S5 Lucas Fye, S6 Hunter Gould; S8 Jack Kazalas; SQ Jackson Rush.

Wentzel likely reaches the state finals and finishes 2nd.

Nasdeo (AAA 121) is the NW Regional champ and caught 3 major breaks:
- returning state champ Zach Jacaruso is out with injury
- many of the top threats are up at 127
- he squeaked by SC-1 champ (returning S6) Dean Houser for the 1 seed, 161.49 to 161.05 pts.

Houser thus gets stuck with Lehigh commit Mason Ziegler in his half of the bracket. The 2 toughest wrestlers in Nasdeo's half -- SQs Christian Horvath and Marco Tocci -- will likely face each other in the quarters.

Nasdeo likely reaches the state finals against Ziegler. It'll be a battle but winnable. Guessing he brings home the gold. Past finals experience will benefit him.

never was a big fan of the Willians bros maybe they have changed but they always seem to gas pretty easily!

Are the PIAA seeding points posted anywhere or would you have to calculate on your own?

Will likely be posted by PIAA or by pa-wrestling.com after Regionals.

Until then, have to calculate but it's pretty easy:
(Win %) + (Prestige Points)

This is easy in Excel. Also, only regional champs get seeded, and there are ways to ID seeds without calculating everybody (see below).

W-L and Win % are posted at pa-wrestling.com in each wrestler's profile. If you calculate today, then you need to add 3-4 wins for each likely regional champ whose regionals have not yet occurred.

Prestige Points is credit for last year's PIAA postseason. S1 = 100, S2 = 95, S3 = 90, etc., S8 = 65. Lower points for regional placers who DNP at states. Pa-wrestling.com has a list of all returning placers.

Don't have to calculate for everyone. Only regional champs get seeded. Freshmen, out of state and preps transfers, and guys who got hurt last year get no prestige points, so they're capped at 100 out of a possible 200.

Also, most regional champs have a similar Win %, so a wide split in prestige points will almost always win out. Example: Wentzel will be 37-8 (82.22%) if he wins regionals, and was S2 (95.0) last year --> 177.22 pts. A returning S5 would need to be 35-1 to tie Wentzel's seeding points. An undefeated S6 cannot catch Wentzel in seeding points.
