PSU - Lehigh Match Thread

This tweet from a hater is going in the vault for the future:

If the tweet gets deleted, it disappears here as well, so here's a screenshot.

Interesting that shirt wasn't pulled before ASU; if this was the plan all along you'd think he'd have been out there against Zahid. Would likely have won that dual.

I don’t think it was the plan until the staff saw how ineffective Conel is. At that point the plan changed.

Pure genius on Cael’s part. Brooks 184 and Shak 197 better than Shak 184, Beard 197. Again IMo

And how did that match last year go?
Verk eked out a win.

It's not like Hoffman is not a tough kid. Luke Karam is wrestling in opens right now because of him.

Verk is going to win a match or two that is going to make everyone happy - if he hangs on to the spot - and hes going to lose a few that make us mad.

I'd consider him at risk to lose to anyone in the top 30 or so (NQ types) and able to win against anyone not on the mid to top rungs of the podium.

This match falls in line with that.

I understand that Verk can keep it close against top wrestlers, but I think he has yet to register a win over a ranked wrestler.

He needs to show me before I believe he can actually upset a top-10 type kid.

Great night at Stabler tonight.

DID NOT expect to see Brooks come out of red shirt tonight.... but very lucky to see the official debut. And impressed.

Mr @Johnbrooks , me and @OldPAwrestler were looking for you to have a BWI Forum meet up.... j/k Great job by AB tonight. We are a lucky fan base. Great wrestlers and great people.

I did meet @OldPAwrestler who sat in front of me. Always good to meet a fellow forum poster... except maybe @GogglesPaizano lol just kidding Goggles.

Anyway, I told Old Pa my real name and he said "You'll always be dbldoofus to me"... I wouldn't have it any other way.

AB’s Halloween costume was fire extinguisher, in a glass box that says “break glass in case of emergency”. I don’t have the actual photo, but it looked something like this:

not sure this was the plan but KC struggling and knowing they wanted Beard to keep his RS intact, I think they came to this conclusion. Shak up to 97 and AB at 84.

The assumption is that Shak will be at 197 but is an undersized Shak better than Beard? Going up 13 pounds in-season is not easy. Also, is he 100%? Have to wonder if the spot is undecided at this point.

Brooks looked great in his first match. Young man has all the tools to be the next big thing.
Let the major slip away by being a bit over aggressive but still real nice performance in hostile territory. Like most freshmen, bottom game may still need some work.

Great to see Berge back on the mat. He will be a tuff out now that that he is at a better weight.

These road matches are always going to be difficult and a few of the guys looked a bit lethargic. Penn State has reached the point where they are everyones Super Bowl and the wrestlers really need to maintain focus and not take anyone lightly.

Kinda agree with most of above comments. I was down at Stabler sitting 6 rows from mat adjacent to coaching staff.
It looked like a lot of guys wrestled afraid to give up points.
RBY waited too long to get going from his feet, should of majored the kid.
Verk and Berge did not want to push offense. Verk is hard to score on but does not have any lower leg game. Berge had one good double. I would think Berge will show more from feet knowing how good of freestyler he is.
Hall had tough match against a good wrestler. He struggled to finish some moves. He was lucky ref didn't see the attempted roll thru. He was decked.
Brooks looked really quick for his size and has great frame. Oddly I saw Casey more animated in coaching a kid during this match than I think I had ever seen before. When Brooks went under, Casey was on his feet giving instructions to get out. I think under might be a weakness for Brooks.
It's a shame that this lineup didn't wrestle at Arizona State.

It’s filled with similar gems.

Usually it’s some guy in Iowa who thinks Tony Hager and Chad Leistickow are bards of the highest order and can’t fathom that there’s wrestling outside Iowa. But this guy’s some enraged Marin County wacko

There are a lot of entitled Marin County wackos.

I thought Berge had 3 great attacks—he didn’t score on the double, but that was due to Humphreys’ insane D. The single he did score on was a real beaut too. His strength has always been his short offense reattacks, that’s where he makes the most hay, but I was very encouraged to see straight up attacks from space from him. All in all, IMO, a great first match back. Against a really tough guy too.

Agree. I was very pleased with Berge's quickness, strength, and ability to keep the train on the tracks late. Humphreys is tough, and currently ranked much lower than his worth because of a bad weekend. I'll take this 2019-20 debut from Berge all day. Plenty of time still to get up to full speed.

Young is a squirrely one, and so being crisp on TD conversions and both savvy and persistent in scrambles should be a point of emphasis for Berge in the meantime. You know, if I were coach. ;)

Rasheed weighed in at ASU. I wonder how much he weighed.

if I remember correctly Humphries wrestled a nice match against Nolf last year.

Regarding Aaron’s work from bottom last night: Guy he wrestled was a 197 last year. AB was 174. Also: he scored 4 or 5 points (2-3 stalls, and a reversal). If that’s his liability, I think we better suit up for a bright future folks:

Regarding Rasheed's weight -- I'm wondering whether 184 was a tough cut after some offseason build and played a small part in the decision to pull Brooks's shirt. Regardless, I'm figuring Rasheed will not be as undersized at 197 in 2020 as he was in 2018, and he wasn't too shabby there in 2018.
