PSU-only Recruits & Commits news

Yeah prefer. Was just curious what you were thinking. I think I agree with you but thought my local kid bias was probably getting in the way of my judgement.
If you really want me to ruin your day, let me know and I'll tell you what I think happens with the local kid.

"Do you have a plan?"

I meant to do this in the earlier post but it was kinda hart from my phone at work -- between Dice's spreadsheet and a few other notes ...

Note that "names to watch" do not reflect any interest from PSU or toward PSU -- literally just some name guys to watch. And weights are guesses (well, maybe not for Mullen).

2023:
- committed: Nasdeo (M2 125/133), Davis (MI 133), Barr (MI 174/184)
- known to be recruiting: Kasak (M2 141/149), Shapiro (MD 149/157), McGowan (FL 125), Mullen (NJ HWT)
- other uncommitted names to watch: S. Johnson (M2, 141), Evans (PA 165), Dellagatta (NJ 174/184), Robell (PA HWT)

We've heard Kasak is down to PSU or Nebraska, and Shapiro is down to PSU or Cornell.

2024:
- committed: none
- finalist for: Gibson (M2 141?)
- names to watch: Simcox (M2 141/149), Harer (PA 165/174), Sealey (NC 165/174), Lawrence (PA 174/184), Kinney (PA 285)

2025:
- names to watch: Desmond (M2 125/133), Lilledahl (MO 125/133), DeLuca (NJ 133/141), Campbell (PA 133/141), Parkins (PA 133/141), Knox (NJ 149), Perry (M2 149/157), Rath (PA 149/157), Shaw (PA 157), Duke (NY 157/165), Sipes (M2 174), Correa (NH 197/HWT), A. Johnson (M2 HWT)
2025 looks like the honey pot for the next big reload. Wow

Yes it does.

And like you said, some meathead or jocksniffer will say Cael lost his touch when we're more strategic in 2024.
As an aside, our 1 stud from that light class of 2019 was Carter of course. I was trying to pin down Carter’s ranking for his class and it was hard. I know Willie was higher on him than others, but TOM had him at 18, and it looks like IM had him 2 or 3 at his weight. Needless to say, some of the higher ranked recruits the Buckeyes nabbed in their #1 class have a ways to go. Kerk left, Kharchla is solid, but the freestyle geeks seem to have overrated him a bit, and Decatur has bust written all over him.

I'll admit I kinda thought that way in past years. But now I follow it a little closer and somewhat understand the thought process. Plus Caels only got 9.9. Got to use them wisely. It turns out Cael does have a plan and a really good one.

A new 125 transfer 2020 Pa state champ started at Lock haven ➡️ OSU ➡️ PSU. 125 is getting crowded

The kid that probably doesn’t fit especially if we land Shapiro but that I really really would love at PSU is Sealy. His style fits so well at Penn State. Always looking to score, great shape, and just pushes the pace like not many can. He looks like a 156/165 and we are just so young there already. As much as I like him I would rather have Shapiro and Levi.

Prefer? Probably Gibson.

Likely to get? Probably Kasak.

Better college career? I have no idea. There's a school of thought that Gibson will physically peak earlier. I'd like to see him this offseason before passing any judgment ... and Cael thought enough of his potential to go after him hard.

Will say this about Gibson: the way he lost to Ungar was shocking to me. Not the fast pin (and it was a quickie), but how he got taken to his back. For someone with his career to date, that was inconceivable. Hopefully that was an aberration (unless he goes elsewhere).
It would be nice to land Kasak and Gibson. That would be a nice combo. Both have tons of upside. You would think Cornell would be in the mix with his brother going there, but who wouldn’t want to come to Happy Valley.

Willie had him around 9.

One thing to remember about Carter's weight class ranking: he deliberately wrestled up a weight at 182 his senior year, knowing he would go back down to 174 in college. Assad was also at 182; otherwise I don't remember who would've been ranked above him.

We likely have money committed to the two MI guys - not 100% of course, but probably money. Not sure if we have much committed to in-state Nasdeo.

If Kasak jumps on, like has been rumored, he is likely getting some as well despite being in-state. McGowan, Mullen and Shapiro are in the same class, I think it's unrealistic to expect commitments from all of them. Even the slush fund has limits.
It is reasonable to have unreasonable expectations, at least until reality sets in.

Yes, with that attitude.

I just don’t see Cael & staff recruiting a few of those 2025 names.

A few of them are attending M2 (aka PSU Junior High) so Im sure they get plenty of “recruiting” from “Coach” DT.

Agreed, there a few I think he likely won't pursue, though they're names worth watching, time for things to change ...

... and as always, the greatest talent evaluator in wrestling (Cael or Willie? Yes!) will find guys we hadn't thought of.

My understanding is that Nasdeo is not taking up any money. Shapiro will be at PSU if he’s a 157, but that’s up in the air. Haines will be 157 to start but not sure he stays there. In fact, would be he doesn’t.
Cael to Shapiro be like "Cassar Diet"

They're not even allowed to initiate contact. Who knows what weight they will project for college. The 2025 list will change over multiple times between now and then. Come talk to me in 2 years.

Can you expand on the bolded part a little?

Is it possible he starts at 149? If so, whose interest level changes...his in PSU or PSU's in him?

I was under the impression that this kid is on the "take no matter what and figure it out later" level.

Not Clay (or Craig), but maybe this is another Snyder case?

Meaning that one side thinks one weight, the other side thinks the next weight up, they disagree on that fundamental point but wait a year and it's no longer a question?

I think Penn State takes him regardless, but if he’s at 157 the path to the lineup is much clearer. Which isn’t to say he couldn’t beat Van Ness or whoever ends up at 149, there are a lot of moving parts, but it’s much easier to sell a Shapiro-Haines-Facundo-Barr 157-184 lineup than it is to muddy things up if he’s at the same weight as Van Ness. This is just my read on things from the people I’ve spoken with, by the way.

When does a college go after DT as head coach?
I imagine somebody has already inquired on his interest.
The Oklahoma State job will probably be opening up in the next few years. It will be interesting to see where they go for a coach.

I find it hard to believe OKST would go outside the family for a first-time college coach.

Smith's coaching tree includes Popolizio (NC State), Scott (UNC), Branch (Wyoming), Pendleton (Oregon State), Ward (Army), Lanham (Duke), Cody (Presbyterian), and Moore (recently American).

Plus they have Esposito and Perry already on staff, and Blake (former Stanford) only an hour away.

Dieringer may be sick of missing out on World/Oly teams by then too, he’d make a great coach, but most guys start out with an assistant job, right?
