PSU - Penn Match Thread

Conel looked the best he has so far but he wont be getting us any points come March from my perspective. Impressive that whatever was wrong with his shoulder he fought through it. He didnt seem to be favoring it much the closer it got to the end of the 3rd.

that is one helluva gut it out job by Conel. the pain in his face hurt through the internet.

his wrestling career wont end on the note he wanted but he has my respect for his attitude and leadership.

I give Kyle a lot of credit for gutting it out.
Coach Cael flew onto the mat when he went down. They must have had a better angle of what happened.

Hope it is not too bad and Dan can bring him back.

I sit behind coaches corner >> coming off the mat Conel was holding his arm immobile and obviously hurting pretty bad.

That's not good. Thanks for that info. I assumed the way he fought out the 3rd that he was alright.

With Conel he is looking at having to beat Shak out for the spot, obviated not knowing the extent of his injury he may not have wanted what could be his last wrestling match to end with a default.

For his own good, I hope Kyle hangs it up and goes out with this W. That is twice he has finished out a match this year that he was injured in. He is a great person and will always have a special place in the hearts of Penn Staters. I just don’t want to see him seriously hurt in a meaningless dual when he is just keeping the spot warm until Rasheed is ready to go. Let Hoopes go at 197 until then.

Next dual isn't until Jan 10th. Have to think Rasheed will be ready by then, especially if he's healthy enough to have wrestled off twice.

I didn't listen to match, but followed Twitter updates.
Did Ironhead give any information about the 125 situation. Teske injured ? or is Merideth winning in the room??

On Friday he said Teske was a little banged up. Nothing major, I wasn’t listening too closely today to hear if he said anything different.

Someone tweeted that Brooks beat shak and Shak beat Conel and someone else tweeted they could confirm it.

What I don't get is a statement I thought I saw today that Shak was not yet medically cleared to wrestle. Would seem to be in conflict with wrestling off -- twice, no less. If he's wrestling off, I would think he is healthy enough to compete. Either there is some misinformation being floated, or something else is awry. Or just flying over my head again.

I think it was Mason Beckman who claims to have been able to confirm that Shak wrestled off at 184 and 197, lost, then won. Not sure why Beckman would know that, but it's not as if he's just some random guy.

My thanks to those that provided updates during the match.

I just checked Beckman’s Twitter and it looks like he erased his confirmation tweet.

Then Casey apparently said in prematch social, that Rasheed was not medically cleared.

Not the first time conflicting info leaking out of Cael-G-B Headquarters.

I think Byers said Sugar was not cleared. I have no idea what that means as far as what he is allowed to do. At some point, he needs some matches.

Cael kind of said he wil be at 197 ,so their that. He could not wrestle off if not cleared to wrestle ?

Someone on HR said they knew someone matside that heard Kyle tell Cael to let him finish this one. Really pulls at the heart strings.

Much respect to Conel for making the long, arduous journey back from what was initially thought to be a career ending injury. He might never make it all the way back to where he wants, but that he made it this far is most impressive. Great job, young man!

+1 Yeah, I thought he was going to break-out in this match. I had him with a MD in KYPSW -- had my hopes up with that 6pt move.

I thought he was making progress. Fri night he was initiating action, but clearly ran out of gas in the third. He has been out of action for a while and he needs to be ready in March so he had plenty of time. Today had to be a setback.

This is true. Starting at 10:03 of Byer's pre-match show (https://gopsusports.com/watch/?Live=624&type=Live), Cael talks about 184 and 197. Regarding pulling AB's shirt he said:

"We needed another guy we can count on and who we know is just solid and can compete for a national title, and we feel like that's the guy. I think it adds a lot to our lineup. And if we are going to pull him, we might as well do that now, right, so we have an away match and then this home match, and then he's got some time to get ready a month before we go again. So, it made sense to do it this week instead of waiting if that was ultimately the move."

Regarding 197, Cael said (at 10:50): "Conel still got an opportunity to, you know, turn things around. And Shak's getting close to getting back, so between those 2, we hope we have a higher placer at 197 as well."

That's about as definitive an answer on plans for these weights going forward as we're ever likely to get from Cael. FWIW, I was able to play the archived Byer's audio on my phone but not my desktop computer.

Lee 13-4 and upset he couldn't turn for the tech
Gardner 7-6 win
Pipher lost 2-5
Joseph win by pin in second
Hall wins 19-4 TF for his 100th PSU win
Brooks leads after 1, 6-2 with >1min RT
Brooks leads after 2, 15-3 with >2 min RT
Brooks wins 19-4, at 6:03
Conel up after 1, 6-1 (TD and 4 NF)
Conel injured on scramble in second. 6-3 but able to resume
Conel toughs it out for 6-5 win (2 stall points; Penn had 0:59 RT)

Riding time was actually 59.9 seconds...….could be what caused the confusion and why he rode him out.....thinking it was going to overtime.

Spoke to Bud on Wednesday and he knew that Brandon was going to wrestle this weekend. What a proud grandpa. I am sure he was at Rec Hall today.

Bud’s great / I worked for him in the Late 70’s and 80’s / always a PSU gentleman/ deserving of the accolades

For the length of time Conel was laying on the mat in pain with Cael next to him, there was a conversation definitely taking place. We were surprised when he was allowed to continue. When action resumed his arm was deliberately by his side in a protective posture. We could only surmise he asked Cael to let him finish. He was in a massive amount of pain as he ran off after the victory. One hell of an effort. 2 minutes never seemed so long before.
