PSU/Texas AM is a 9:55pm tipoff on TBS

Anyone remember if the Providence game in 2001 was in the last window? I remember it being at night on that first Friday.

It was at night on Friday. It may have been the last game. It was definitely late.
Yea, can’t remember how late, but know it was at night.

UCLA was afternoon as the second game (got to see Eastern Michigan pull the upset first), and I remember sitting through the Marquette-Monmouth game after watching us lose to Arkansas in Providence. Know that Temple was afternoon, pretty sure in the second afternoon window.

The Providence game in 2001 started after dark. I remember that.

...and that is assuming non of the prior games goes into OT.

That should get a big audience on the east coast.
It’s actually the second to last game of the day. The last game of the day is UCLA vs UNC Asheville in Sacramento. That game will surely be a blowout tho.

This 9:55pm EST start is the thing that pisses me off the most. Every year me and a bunch of buddies belly up to the bar at 12p starting Thursday and Friday. I’d love nothing more to be playing while the excitement is still in the bar, which is from around noon until the dinner time break in the action. It starts up again for the later games, but 10p on a Thursday is just too damn late to enjoy the pomp and circumstance. By then, the energy in the bar is dead.

Truth be told, it’s ME that doesn’t want to be watching a game until midnight on a Thursday night. I’ve got to get my rest for Friday’s game watch/ St. Patty’s Day marathon.

People literally will watch the games from noon-midnight without a second thought
This is one thing that almost everyone gambles on to same level.
You might. Fanatics might. But casual fans who have to get up for work the next day aren't going to stay up that late.

Was talking to a good friend this afternoon about a meeting we planned to attend with someone at church. My friend is Michigan grad and enlightened me that the guy we were meeting with was also a Michigan grad.

I had a little fun with him and replied, "oh, so he doesn't have any team to root for in the NCAA tournament either...."

;)

Define casual fans....casual Penn State fans? They'll watch so will anyone that watched a noon game when they're supposed to be at work. Basically you're saying anything other than a 7pm start is an insult.

I didn't say anything about an insult. There's a reason why prime time is considered 8:00 - 11:00. That's when most viewers watch.

A&M fans will watch between 9:00 - 11:30 which is pushing it a bit but not too bad. Fewer people on the east coast will watch from 10:00 - 12:30.

You realize the title game starts after 9pm right? Ratings in the east coast for a 955 game will be fine. Always are.

Prime time covers the first half of the game...the belief that the clock turns 10 and people are going to think that's too late to watch a tournament game is....illogical but okay.

The reason the ratings will be fine is because, aside from a select few, almost everyone will be at home individually watching on TV sets, not partying at a bar or at a friend’s house.

People will still be watching then, right?
Sorry--the argument keeps changing. The post I responded to said ratings would be low because of the start time and people have to work the next day which is false
If you want to say a late start limits people's ability to hang out with friends/family to watch then game then fine but all start times during the weekend games other than 7pm do that. It's just as easy to take Thursday/Friday off work and go to the bar for a night game as it is for a day game.

So you are equating a 10 vs 7 first round game with the national title game which will be the last game of the season?

I'm equating people being extremely excited for the first weekend of March Madness (Especially the first day) with the excitement for the title game.
We all realize March Madness (especially that Thurs/Fri) is huge--right? Or we trying to pretend otherwise still?

Yep, especially since it's Thursday and many will still need to get up for work the next day. Sure PSU grads will stay up. But with so many games all day on Thursday there will be a good many BB fans that have seen enough games already that day and choose to bag all or part of the PSU 9:55 start game.

Many people that have demanding jobs won't stay up to watch a game their team is not playing in. Believing otherwise is illogical.

You realize a lot of people stay up to midnight typically--for most people it's an extra hour. Let's not pretend anyone that would have watched Penn State-A&M at noon or 230 wouldn't watch at 955

I haven’t argued ratings would be low. I simply said the bar I go to will not be nearly as exciting for the late game as compared to if the game were played earlier in the day.

As john McEnroe would say, are you serious? I dont know a single person over 25 who stays up past 10 unless its Fri/Sat night? Yes I know a lot of people in different disciplines too.

The game wont tip until 10:15 or later. I will watch the 1st half and then record the second.

Maybe I'm an outlier, but my general bed time is somewhere in the 1-2am range...and if there is a sporting event that I care about, I get up and watch it. Soccer games at 4am, Australian Open tennis at 3am, British Open overnight, etc.

For the past 30 plus years while working, my job started at 6am and it's 45 minutes from my house. If I'm up past 10, it's extremely unusual. Just depends on your job / life requirements.

How much over 25 are you talking? 36 and I'm never in bed before 10.

Do you know anyone? I haven't gone to bed before 1130 unless I was sick and I'm almost 50. I know some that go to bed between 10-11 but those people are the minority.

And honestly now that more jobs are remote it's likely more people are going to bed later not less. No commutes.

I asked this question at work and only 3 people out of 42 said they go to bed after 10. I had my wife ask her work people, a little higher, 6 out of 33. All of us are at work by 7 15 so that may be part of it but even those I dont work with rarely are up after 10.

most are in 30's and 40's with kids. matter of fact those with young kids say they are in bed by 9 some nights. Bed at 10 and uo by 5 in the normal
