PSU vs Yale MBB Game Thread

PSU pulls off the comeback, and wins 58-56. Yale tried a 3-pointer for the win with 3 sec left on the clock, but missed it, and PSU rebounded the ball.

Pat narrowly avoided throwing away the whole season.

A win is a win and it will otherwise be forgotten.

I'm not sure there's anything else good to say about that game. A loss to Yale at home would have really tanked us.
There will be several teams dancing with a lot worse losses than Yale. But that’s a game we’ve often lost in the past.

With all due respect, it’s nice, but being ranked at Thanksgiving doesn’t mean a heck of a lot.....

Still gonna be a struggle to get to .500 in conference.....but that might be enough to get them dancing.

There is a real chance in the Coaches Poll. We received 9 votes before going 2-0 this week, and GTown dismantling #22. We'll be close (KenPom has us ranked)
We’ll be about 30th in Pomeroy after this I believe. Should about the 4th-5th team also receiving votes in the coaches poll.

Actually 33rd now, but will be 32nd after Ken runs the Providence result.
Well, we have plenty opportunity to get ranked next week. Realistically, I think we hopefully can get a 1-1 split (beat Miss, lose to Cuse or lose to Miss, beat OK St). If we show up uninspired like the first 36 minutes of tonight, we'll go 0-2, but if he play like we did against GTown we can go 2-0 and certainly be ranked.

1 game at a time with this squad, though.

Agree, but those teams are strong enough to overcome a bad loss. I don't think PSU is in that category. They have to win the games they should win.

The history with Pat (and Ed before him) is that we totally blow it with bad OOC losses.

This is the first time in a long time that I feel like we control our own destiny, so to speak, in terms of the tournament. I think we are on track to get there this year. If we can get through the OOC with an impressive record, then 0.500 in conference might be sufficient

Agree but it's a little early to say. Gotta get at least a split vs Mississippi/ Cuse. I wish we had a PG that can shoot.

Didn't see the game so need to know was it just poor play or did Pat not have them ready or did he get outcoached and not know how to make adjustments in the first half?

It is too early, but keep in mind that Pat had already blown it by this point last season, with losses to DePaul and Bradley.

With our sched, we can. In 2010-11 we lost to Maine in December and still went dancing

But we only went to the NCAA dance because of a heroic run to the BTT finals. Going into that weekend we were looking at NIT. Wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State put us on the bubble and then in. We didn't look like we belonged until the very last minute. I don't want to say that appearance was a fluke, but it was close to one.

A little of everything. Missed a lot of open 3’s, and Yale just kept collapsing more and more. Didn’t have any answers when shots weren’t falling and we couldn’t get anything going at the rim. Lamar sat a lot of the first half with foul trouble and Mike looked like 2018-2019 Mike today (didn’t have that burst we’ve seen this season).

Also give Yale a lot of credit. They were moving the ball and weren’t missing open looks.

That team had Talor Battle and Tim Frazier. This team doesn't have a PG who is an offensive threat. I think this team can make the tournament but I'd like our chances a lot better if we had one of those guys or a guy like Newbill or Carr.

Throwing away the whole season? You need to get some perspective.

Well when a team hasn’t been ranked in god knows how long, being ranked any time is a good thing.

When you rely on the 3’s and they’re not falling, you can lose to anyone. This wasn’t a big win, but it was a huge non-loss.

This team is better than the 2010-11 team. Actually the last three teams have been better than that team was.

The sad part is that Chambers has yet to do anything with it.

I am getting to the home stretch of life and I would give both of my testicles for a W over Boeheim and Syracuse. The damn things always got me in trouble anyway, so no big loss.

Have we won a tournament since the Cable Car Classic in 1995? I’m thinking that we haven’t. This field reminds me of that field too, with four solid teams but no one that we can’t beat (in fact, we’ll be favored on Wednesday, and Friday is no worse than a coin flip).
